Don't spray your warm block with cold water from a pressure washer. Running your car while pressure washing will keep water out of your spark plugs and coil packs or whatever you have. Don't aim it directly at wires(most the time it's ok though). Don't spray directly at electrical connectors. Don't spray directly at the alternator. Don't spray directly at the coil packs, distributor, or coil. Splash will not hurt anything. Pressure will. Keep engine COLD and RUNNING while washing. Drive to dry.
@zmajnex011 ok wat would suggest taking it to mechanic n payn someone to do it? i mean if u learn how to do it ,do it yurself idle hands r the devils playground. also make a video thats y i saw this,or thats y u saw it too. I do agree on he did it any specific tips then? iwanna clean mine since the damn radiator cap poped due to overheating n antifreeze got nearly everywhere, thats i want to clean, i fixd the proble now i want to clean da engine. its looks clean n almost new wen it was clean
yes @armonianthug09 it has DO NOT START ENGINE after using this product on engine. i use EngineBright and a off brand! i had oil build up on my engine and i'm cleaning it up now. But never start ur vehicle up right after you clean it! never a good idea! unless u are goin to buy a new or used car!
@snowman44077 yeah it gets wet but not like that. and i know definmatly if you spray down your gasolin engine like that and the coil and distributer and stugg like gets wet you are screwed. he is surpose to cover the alternator and distributer from getting wet or getting any chemical in them, because the chemical destroys the insulator in the fieldcoils.
@gamermanist Buddy, I hope you're joking, right? This is an inline 6 cylinder Jeep, looking to be lat 90's or early 2000s. This engine doesn't have a carb.
Your meant to Cover the Battery, alternator, Air Intake. and spark plugs or your car will Brake down. especially in a Jeep coz That engine has very little covering and a lot of open wires and pipes. so you do need to be more careful.
I worked before to a ''car wash mobile'' 2 truck whit water thank and all the equipament for to clean cars.We start the engine, put degreaser and wash, spray armorol and we leave the engine on about 5 min or less.Used cars and new,no problems about that.
@zmajnex011 Excuse me but how do you clean your Engine? lol I been cleaning them since i was old enough to turn a wrench and i've never screwed one up from cleaning it i use a power washer and never covered a thing so please inform me of how he messed up would love to here it.....
first off. You DO NOT and i mean DO NOT use a frigging pressure washer! just wet it with a regular hose then spray degreaser, grab a tooth brush or scrub brush then BRUSH AROUND certain components that are built up. Then rinse with a light shower of water. THAT is how you clean an engine folks!
Pressure don't matter.. I'm talking about this guy spraying ANY AMOUNT of water on the distributor & alternator ESPECIALLY!
The Distributor is NOT water tight & there's nothing but electrical parts in there..It's like spray washing only the WHOLE FRONT SIDE of your TV..You think water won't get in there, but soon enough it'll have problems.
Same with the alternator..that sucker has openings where plenty of water can rest at.
You can do what you want But I'm gonna be smart on this...
@danpeternz Exactly. Plus on newer cars most of the engine is covered up with plastic so washing your engine doesn't hurt it at all. I been detailing cars for a while now and I wash the engine on my car twice a year and never had any issues.
Engines should be able to take small to large amounts of water, especially good ones you can wet them. However, I would not use a pressured water because it can actually damage bits or damage electrical stuff, onboard computer etc, I mean physically, like you can take paint off a wall with it it can peel, break, bend etc.... That's the all point.
This was very uninformative.......thank you for the tips. Now...........I think I hear your Mother calling you.....it's lunchtime and she has made your favorite sandwich with chips, juice box and a special cookie!
You shouldn't leave it on if you're covering stuff. You should probably cover the intake and that would really mess up if you try running it. Leaving it running and having a hot engine can crack the engine block if you apply cold water.
The plugs are pretty resistant honestly, the alternator and intake not so much. I'd leave it out and not run it for a while though.
@mrsinn Quite correct....I do car valeting, and i have cleaned many a 4x4 engine this way, without problems...especially older ones which have hardly any fancy electrics at all.
Most these comments are hilarious, but true where is it written u can spray electrical /electronic parts with water and expect them to function properly, unless u leave the engine to dry out completely which can take days. Leave it to professionals or use compressed air. Oh and look he didn't even disconnect the battery.
@jorge9000 WELL it will help the engine run cooler because the dirts not acting like a coat for it and you have less change of clogging the filter and getting dirt in you carburater and its just good to do every 6 months to a year
@POWERSTROKEF350MAN Ok, it makes sense. However i know a friend who did it and he got de distributor dead. It is less risky to clean a diesel engine...
@POWERSTROKEF350MAN Well said. Some of these comments make it sound like your going to kill your motor from washing it and thats not true if you know what your doing.
It's cool to wash your engine but he forgot 2 things that are important before spraying away.
1. Covering up the distributor.
2. Covering up the alternator.
These 2 components NEED to stay dry at all times..sure you got a seal on the distributor but it's not all that tight of seal & if the alternator gets wet it'll be like spraying water in a toaster & hoping it'll work.
All you need to do is cover up both with a plastic bag & you're set to spray..BUT not with a pressure hose tho.
It really depends, what car you have. Newer cars have more protecting plastic around the engine. So there is not much places which you might need to protect or avoid spraying water. Older cars need more protecting i.e. distributor cap, which might cause ignition problems, if wet. I clean my engine with molten lava it's easy to come by and if you live near a volcano then it's free. Be sure to apply it generously and leave it to do it's job for some 5 to 10 mins but don't let it dry. It's very thorough and removes even those stubborn stains. Be careful not to put the lava directly on the electronics as it can damage them which could end up costing you a small fortune. Good luck.
Hello i am a car detail-er for transformers auto detailing in Washington state. And to everybody who does not want to spend to much money check out the local dollar store they have the same exact cleaners but with a diff name.
...This guy says don't spray water directly at the alternator or the electric components...15 seconds later he's spraying the whole engine like there's no tomorrow...not even a towel to cover up the electric stuff...
@jbentley8383 do u understand there is really no way to get past that. put a towel on it whats gonna happen it gets wet? what would you do? i would really like to know
@TheDAROCKSTER place a plastic bag over the alternator with a rubber band to seal the bag. But if you are running the engine at the same time it is not going to harm it. This is a jeep and the alternator if right in front. You run this jeep through water with a snorkel it can go clear to the windshield. No worries about the alternator
lol.this guy is crazy my uncle had a old banger of a van for 30years used to go to work 9 to 5 for them 30years and he never ever cleaned the outside of the engine.ITS INSIDE THE ENGINE THAT REALY MATTER'S FORGET THIS MAD MAN AND HIS PRESSURE WASHER THIS THE MOST STUPID THING IVE EVER SEEN!
False, false, false. You never spray the car on the outside or on the engine with water BEFORE degreasing. You allways degrease first, by doing so the degreaser helps the dirt to come off as you RINSE the car afterwards.
This guy does it wrong, feel free to thank me.
Oh and by the way, don't wash your engine by yourself, if you don't know how it is supposed to be done. As "goru426" said, pay someone around 50 $ to get it done properly.
True, true, true. You always spray the car down first, if you don't the de-greaser will take off your paint. Wash it yourself... there is no harm in it and you save $50 bucks... ever watch the guy you pay to do it? he does it the same exact way... you are just to chickenshit to try it and feel better knowing a "certified" car washer is doing it for you.
I dont wash the engine before i spray degreaser, water kills the effect of chemical in degreaser, run the car and make the engine a bit hot so the grease and dirts gets softer, spray the engine with heavy duty degreaser and wash it with garden hose, u even dont need pressure water gun, after all any spot is dirty clean it with a piece of rag, run the car for five minutes for complete drying the engine, i do this to my cars years and years, no trouble at all. cheers.
i have an 04gt and the engine is filth underneath with grease, oil stain and just plain dirt has anyone ever used the engine cleaner at a carwash or does anybody recomend using it
WATER ON ENGINE IS LIKE U JUMP FRM UR WINDOW .... the best to do is to get a degreaser + an old t-shirt that is gonna be to waste and clean ur engine by hand NEVER WATER !!!!!( I PAYD 4K euros cause of that u are showing here !!!! )
i don't trust spraying water on the engine area, i am scared of short circuiting the battery, flooding the air filter box, ruining some wire, or flooding the engine with water.
i am pretty sure water in the engine block will make the engine not happy or something
water in the block should be fine, as long as you dont completely flood it. if theres only some, chances are its gonna get evaporated when you start the engine, and its gonna go out the tailpipe, without ruining anything. i still wouldnt recommend just sprayingwater all over the place. not for any real reason i guess, it just seems risky to me.
Yes, what other's have said. This is ill-advised. The way they're telling you may get it cleaned better, but you're at risk for screwing everything over. Just spray 409 on a rag, and start wiping.
i did this 2 my car and it would not start and my dad had a doo at me dose any 1 what went wrong and how i can prevent it if you do can you hit reply and tell me thanks
always clean the engine with it running, i dont know if you cleaned the engine with it on or off but, every time i clean the engine on my car and my customers cars i always have the engine running especially older cars that have a distributor instead of coil pack ignitions.. the water can flood the ignition preventing it from starting which i have seen a lot of people do at work, so i hope this helps you..
yea def have it run while you do it and then shut the hood and have the engine run for 10-15 minutes after u rinse the engine off, basically the heat creates a steam clean process and dries up all the water so u have no problem starting the car..
keep your comments to yourself but, this process i have been using for years and was even taught to use at a porsche and audi dealer i worked for, so what do you have to say now? the degreasers recommended for engines are not flammable to buddy so check into that before posting a comment to!!!!
I have a 2004 Mercury Sable LS 3.0L DOHC which specifies 5w20 motor oil. I like an idiot changed the oil and added 10w40 instead of 5w20. Is there anything wrong with this? Should I switch back to 5w20 on my next oil change?
don't panic... nohting will happen. all that will happen is that you may get decreased gas mileage, because the 10 is thicker than the 5, so there is more friction, which means that your engine has to work harder to get you up to speed. this is why you may get worse gas milege. but don't worry, nothing will happen to it.
very risky. The way I do it, is spray WD40 on wires, cover alternator and fuse boxes with aluminum foil and cover the air intake. Use low pressure on engine, then apply P21S, scrub with EZ Detail Brush to get into every crevice..finish up with a 1" detail brush. Then blow dry all of the water with a leaf blower. Take off all the aluminum foil and open up the air intake. Finish by wiping with a wet cloth what I covered up. And then apply 303 Aerospace Protectant. Start the engine and let it dry.
I've pressure washed an engine before and it was still dirty. Engine cleaner at the auto store is the only thing to make it clean. But then why are you washing your engine? Even the little bit of oil drip from the filler cap does not matter when dust sticks to it. To say that the "engine cools better" is probably another bunch of hype except for mud after an off road expedition.
theres an engine grime cleaner they sell an autozone made specially for this. If you power wash your engine eventually little pieces may rust and deteriorate.
True; however, the heat and moisture in the engine bay basically rusts and ceases bolts and screws anyway. i.e. the exhaust manifold bolts, and such. cheers! :)
its actually not a good idea to use a pressure washer on an engine. it will effect the wiring under the hood. and never start your engine up right after hosing it off its not good for it
I totally agree! I can detail an engine w/o a steam cleaner and make it look just as good or better! And yes, you risk blowing things off, important and non-important things off! It's all about the product! Blowing it off with a air hose is a great idea or a leaf blower!
covering up electrical components is important...and using mild engine degreaser is key. It also helps to wipe and brush some of the engine components too---for a more effective cleaning.
your engine dont have to be running, thats just when it is already hot to keep from cracking anything that is hot, cause the water is cold...not good for cast, and as for the alternator, I've been cleaning a D8R dozer for 5 years with the same alternator every 50 hours for look over servicing and has stayed at 26.4 volts, seeing it has 24 volt batteries and use it all the time on my vehicle, just dont go crazy with it, just run over it about 15 inches away and be done with it...
this doesn't seem like a good way to clean the engine. shouldn't you be covering up the electrical and electronic components with plastic to prevent short circuit? that's what manufacturers recommend.
gotta cover that battery and other wires n such..not all that smart to be spraying electrical components

Good luck.

...This guy says don't spray water directly at the alternator or the electric components...15 seconds later he's spraying the whole engine like there's no tomorrow...not even a towel to cover up the electric stuff...
jbentley8383 1 year ago 126
@jbentley8383 do u understand there is really no way to get past that. put a towel on it whats gonna happen it gets wet? what would you do? i would really like to know
TheDAROCKSTER 1 year ago
@TheDAROCKSTER place a plastic bag over the alternator with a rubber band to seal the bag. But if you are running the engine at the same time it is not going to harm it. This is a jeep and the alternator if right in front. You run this jeep through water with a snorkel it can go clear to the windshield. No worries about the alternator

can u show how to clean an engine on a 96 grand am
drifter247 2 years ago 2
False, false, false. You never spray the car on the outside or on the engine with water BEFORE degreasing. You allways degrease first, by doing so the degreaser helps the dirt to come off as you RINSE the car afterwards.
This guy does it wrong, feel free to thank me.
Oh and by the way, don't wash your engine by yourself, if you don't know how it is supposed to be done. As "goru426" said, pay someone around 50 $ to get it done properly.
Hope that helped.
Znitso 2 years ago 6
@Znitso

WaffenSSLegion 2 years ago 3
I dont wash the engine before i spray degreaser, water kills the effect of chemical in degreaser, run the car and make the engine a bit hot so the grease and dirts gets softer, spray the engine with heavy duty degreaser and wash it with garden hose, u even dont need pressure water gun, after all any spot is dirty clean it with a piece of rag, run the car for five minutes for complete drying the engine, i do this to my cars years and years, no trouble at all. cheers.

the newer the better because more modern cars have covers and casings to cover up wires and spark plugs.

Newer designed engines can be washed but watchout if u have an older vehicle. Cover critical parts with plastic bags.

word of advice...DONT DO THAT
TWill16 2 years ago
i don't trust spraying water on the engine area, i am scared of short circuiting the battery, flooding the air filter box, ruining some wire, or flooding the engine with water.
i am pretty sure water in the engine block will make the engine not happy or something
TraumaER 2 years ago 6
water in the block should be fine, as long as you dont completely flood it. if theres only some, chances are its gonna get evaporated when you start the engine, and its gonna go out the tailpipe, without ruining anything. i still wouldnt recommend just sprayingwater all over the place. not for any real reason i guess, it just seems risky to me.
pepene93 2 years ago
Yes, what other's have said. This is ill-advised. The way they're telling you may get it cleaned better, but you're at risk for screwing everything over. Just spray 409 on a rag, and start wiping.
SirBowie 2 years ago
i did this 2 my car and it would not start and my dad had a doo at me dose any 1 what went wrong and how i can prevent it if you do can you hit reply and tell me thanks
oscar2hot4u 2 years ago
always clean the engine with it running, i dont know if you cleaned the engine with it on or off but, every time i clean the engine on my car and my customers cars i always have the engine running especially older cars that have a distributor instead of coil pack ignitions.. the water can flood the ignition preventing it from starting which i have seen a lot of people do at work, so i hope this helps you..
boostncobra 2 years ago
i have it off and its from 1994 but thanks for your advice ill get back 2 u if it works
oscar2hot4u 2 years ago
yea def have it run while you do it and then shut the hood and have the engine run for 10-15 minutes after u rinse the engine off, basically the heat creates a steam clean process and dries up all the water so u have no problem starting the car..
boostncobra 2 years ago
Yeah good idea, spray cold water and flammable degreaser onto a hot engine, DONT listen to this person^^^^
LD4WG 2 years ago 3
keep your comments to yourself but, this process i have been using for years and was even taught to use at a porsche and audi dealer i worked for, so what do you have to say now? the degreasers recommended for engines are not flammable to buddy so check into that before posting a comment to!!!!

I have a 2004 Mercury Sable LS 3.0L DOHC which specifies 5w20 motor oil. I like an idiot changed the oil and added 10w40 instead of 5w20. Is there anything wrong with this? Should I switch back to 5w20 on my next oil change?
gbrescan777 2 years ago
there is nothing wrong with that its just that the oil is a little thicker thats it, but on my nxt oil change go back to what u normally would put
volanrelapse 2 years ago
don't panic... nohting will happen. all that will happen is that you may get decreased gas mileage, because the 10 is thicker than the 5, so there is more friction, which means that your engine has to work harder to get you up to speed. this is why you may get worse gas milege. but don't worry, nothing will happen to it.
toyotacooper 2 years ago
Also a good idea is to apply some grease onto the hood lock mechanism after the wash, so that it wouldn't seize up.
mrjost55 2 years ago
Start the engine and let it dry.
mrjost55 2 years ago
I've pressure washed an engine before and it was still dirty. Engine cleaner at the auto store is the only thing to make it clean. But then why are you washing your engine? Even the little bit of oil drip from the filler cap does not matter when dust sticks to it. To say that the "engine cools better" is probably another bunch of hype except for mud after an off road expedition.
metalschooldrill 2 years ago
you wash the engin because with dirt grease and debris on it will get warmer than usual
Kryllzors 2 years ago
what do u use then?
bpattana 2 years ago
theres an engine grime cleaner they sell an autozone made specially for this. If you power wash your engine eventually little pieces may rust and deteriorate.
xma456 2 years ago
True; however, the heat and moisture in the engine bay basically rusts and ceases bolts and screws anyway. i.e. the exhaust manifold bolts, and such. cheers! :)

In most owner manuals, it says to use a power washer but cover certain areas.
I wouldn't though.
Toadphillips 2 years ago
oh really why?
jasonman1515 2 years ago
its actually not a good idea to use a pressure washer on an engine. it will effect the wiring under the hood. and never start your engine up right after hosing it off its not good for it
motocross1992 2 years ago 2
I totally agree! I can detail an engine w/o a steam cleaner and make it look just as good or better! And yes, you risk blowing things off, important and non-important things off! It's all about the product! Blowing it off with a air hose is a great idea or a leaf blower!
joshjames76 2 years ago
i use a leaf blower to blow all the loose wet areas.

your alternater cannot get damaged with a presure washer.. only if you put the hose directly on the appliance..like he sed at the beginning
howtoandwhatifs 2 years ago
so around the electrical components will be ok?
elchamber 2 years ago
hell no. cover it up! If you accidently have water on any electrical components, use wd40. it will evaporate the water.
jasonman1515 2 years ago
your engine dont have to be running, thats just when it is already hot to keep from cracking anything that is hot, cause the water is cold...not good for cast, and as for the alternator, I've been cleaning a D8R dozer for 5 years with the same alternator every 50 hours for look over servicing and has stayed at 26.4 volts, seeing it has 24 volt batteries and use it all the time on my vehicle, just dont go crazy with it, just run over it about 15 inches away and be done with it...
Lee37726 2 years ago
this doesn't seem like a good way to clean the engine. shouldn't you be covering up the electrical and electronic components with plastic to prevent short circuit? that's what manufacturers recommend.
dhom100 2 years ago
