There's a distinct magic that music can capture, it can't really be defined, but when it happens you can't deny it. It's when it catches one of your emotions, and brings it to your attention. It might be one you've never even knew existed in you, but thats why The Shins are so good. They can do that. Often.
THIS is so far from what the song is about..... it would have been better to film a cemetery. It is about the black wave of death permeates everything. Cooked goose = death / tongues tied = dead can't speak/ airborne blight = floating feeling of death for those left behind/ looking on the brighter side when your dead there is not much your obliged to do/ meadow black breeze blow = cemetery/ you are most alone in a grave/ through the earth to chill your bones = the black wave of death :/
@WhoisJacqueFresco I don't know man, to me it seems more like the song goes with the photo sequence extremely well. Its almost as if the photos are "life flashing before your eyes", just as the black wave of death hits. Even though the pictures may have a brighter hue, they seem somewhat morose and ending as well. I don't know.
@WhoisJacqueFresco I agree with your interpretation, but music is about the meaning the listener creates and not the meaning the song writer(s) originally meant. Music creates feelings, often ones you've been feeling deep down, and it makes you feel connected, almost a catharsis, because you are seeing or hearing your feelings being expressed. Here the audio creates emotions of sadness, fragility, warmth, beauty that goes well with the visuals that produce a very similar set of emotions.
@WhoisJacqueFresco I should add that it wouldn't be better to film a cemetery, but rather it would be a different interpretation, perspective, or expression because there's no objective scale on which we can compare artistic films; the nature of film and art for that matter is much too subjective. You seem to possess an analytical mind, which are often the kind of minds that create art, being the ones that feel the most isolated in their own perspective. Perhaps you should create your own film.
I disagree. WhatI take from this song is completely different from what I got from the vid. The song is better by itself, but the vid was pretty good as well. Not as much cohesion as there could have been.
amazing

This is my favorite shins song. It reminds me of the good times I had, before I went and fucked my life up.

@regger270 You know I doubted that, but when I saw the raven ,and the images more closely, I thought "could be". I can see what your saying.

Your art (Or Gracie's, if you're not her :D) really amplifies the feeling of Black Wave. It's marvelous.
Great work!

This is Warren responding:
Thank you for the kind words.
The process for creating this was pretty simple.
It started and ended with Gracie's photographs.
It made itself.
