There is and SHOULD BE a double standard. When someone says something or does something, the perceived intent means everything. EXAMPLE 1 You see a middle aged man putting a semi conscious teenage girl in his car, it sets off alarm bells. It might be a relative or someone trying to help. It might not be. What's his intent?. EXAMPLE 2 You see a middle aged man in a uniform putting a semi conscious teenage girl in the back of an ambulance. No alarm bells regarding his intent. Duh.
Thank you for the video, it was very informative. I am an ethnic European American who is as white as paper, but to the shallow eye, I think I could be mistaken for a predecessor of a slaver. To use the word (which I would never do) would probably result in bruises or broken bones. I would like to stoke the fire on this argument again to ask you if you had any insight into why African Americans feel comfortable using the word to identify each other, while it is a shock factor if a white says it?
when i was young, we referred to blacks as niggers. there was nigger smith, nigger nelson, and so on. i never caught any flack over it. they simply didn't seem to be offended. what they called me, i didn't give a damn. i just assumed that the word was a derivitive of the word 'niger' or nigeria in africa. but as i grew older and wiser, i was faced with the harsh reality that a nigger can be any color. i see that it's considered an insult. but some people need to be insulted.

On a related topic, I actually do think African American, Asian American and European American is better than black, white etc. I don't want to seem ultra pc, but it has actually always struck me that black people aren't really black, white people aren't really white and it just seems to objectify us and conceptualise us as fundamentally opposite. Really we have different degrees of skin pigmentation and there are other physical continuums on which we are closer together.

Actually, much of racism is BECAUSE OF religion, particularly the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam).

I've never actually met a truly black person (black as in pure non-crystallized carbon dust). I've never met a truly white person (even albinos tend to be pinkish). Some of my friends (one in particular a Mexican buy) uses this word. And when I heard him call me that he said, "Oh no, not the bad way," and I had to say and put him in check. "No there will be no use of that word infront of me. I don't care who you use it in front of just don't let me hear it." And I told him very calmly and I haven't heard it from him since. If only more people could see this video. This is actually a smart and informative evaluation of the word. I see those two words and see them as one in the same, yet people try to rationalize it by using urban interpretations of the word, but its a hurtful and degrading slang because slavery has been over for over 150 years. On a related topic, I actually do think African American, Asian American and European American is better than black, white etc. I don't want to seem ultra pc, but it has actually always struck me that black people aren't really black, white people aren't really white and it just seems to objectify us and conceptualise us as fundamentally opposite. Really we have different degrees of skin pigmentation and there are other physical continuums on which we are closer together.

Actually, much of racism is BECAUSE OF religion, particularly the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam).

For the record, the terms "cracker" and "redneck" were invented by middle-and-upper-class white people to oppress the lowest-class whites. While they weren't chattel slaves like Africans were (a significant distinction), they were slaves in the sense of not being paid for labor ("indentured servants" and the like) and not being permitted control over their own lives.
"Redneck" in particular described the sunburned necks (often leading to cancer) of white "servants" slaving in fields all day.

• The Wilmington Insurrection of 1898 (origin of Jim Crow)
• The Tulsa Race War (1st use of aircraft to attack civilians in the USA. The next was 9/11.)
• The Rosewood Massacre (entire town wiped out — only a historical marker is there now)

It's said that the use of that word is a 'term of endearment', and that never set well with me. The word N*gger has no love in it, NONE. Random use of 'N*gger' & associated thoughts are & will always represent oppresion of our people. I wish we could send all the ignorant Black folks back in time 45-50 years and let them try using that 'term of endearment' like it's no problem! I guess using a word like Brother doesn't convey enough LOVE for some folks.....Hmmmm!

I'm all for not saying words, but be realistic. "Blacklisting" words makes you look very closed minded, in my opinion. Stumbling over your sentences because you seem to be choking on your own mental capabilities is terrible. If someone called you "the n word" treat it like someone calling you the "b" word. Quote them if needed. It's not like someone molested you and youre telling someone about it fearfully.
I'd be more offended at being called BLACK btw. Black is more ignorant than the "N word"

I've never actually met a truly black person (black as in pure non-crystallized carbon dust). I've never met a truly white person (even albinos tend to be pinkish). Nearly everyone's skin is various shades of low-saturation red hue. Hue and saturation lie within a narrow range (with medical exceptions such as jaundice and cyanosis). Only luminance differs significantly.

Differentiating people based on a single word is pure genius. And that is pure sarcasm.
It's a negative word, and used 'meaningfully' by low intelligent people (either 'style' for either 'meaning') - but when one of you douchebags pull a "OMG UR SCUM!!" on me for say, quoting someone else because you heard the word, it's going to be fun on your part.

I'm glad when people use those words because it helps me to weed them out from people I want to associate with. Unfortunately that word is here to stay because mentally complacent people out number intelligent people 100 fold, and ones who find that word to be impressive usually are not very bright and the less bright ones typically have the most kids and they raise them up to think the same way(more or less). So I believe the these words will be around for a very,very long time. It's So sad.

I completely agree with you Corey. I don't understand why hiphop artists and some people within the black community still continue to use this word. By using the "N" word it just gives other races the okay to use the word. It's a negative and derogatory word that needs to stop.

Some of my friends (one in particular a Mexican buy) uses this word. And when I heard him call me that he said, "Oh no, not the bad way," and I had to say and put him in check. "No there will be no use of that word infront of me. I don't care who you use it in front of just don't let me hear it." And I told him very calmly and I haven't heard it from him since. My exboyfriend who is black, called some people the n word. I asked him why he would do this. I thought that was really sad he would use that word. He made excuses. But there are no excuses to use this word or any other discriminative word. Good video.
