I think they've been through a big change in their lifes so passing from the road stile of tlife to that family -children-wives living in one place , make a life out there, biuld up a new image as fathers and shit must be very very psyco for them. St Anger had some pretty fucking good riffs and ideas but suffered from rushed song development and terrible production. I only ever listen to the DVD that came with the album rather than the album itself. The sound is a lot better. Old Metallica sounded naturally raw and real, but St Anger sounded forced. Had some of those riffs surfaced in the 80's, they could have been classics.

Well of course it was made to sell records. All albums are. But they didn't specifically create the sound of St Anger in order to gain more sales. The sound of St Anger just doesn't bode well with the general public. It isn't a sell-out sound. It may be crappy, but not sell-out. I agree that if any album has to have the sell-out label, it's Load. But I think that was Metallica just genuinely trying out new shit. And it's quite underrated!
