  • To think, people were listening to Nirvana and Whitney Houston back in 93. Little did they know, one of the greatest bands in history would be performing an eventual all-time classic piece of progressive music.

  • 15:56 malmsteen?

  • @Calidosaurico I think that a lot of the metal influence came from Portnoy. Listen to Rudess and Petrucci's solo albums: it becomes pretty clear what they aspects they contribute to Dream Theater. Additionally, all of their solo albums have really creative, well written music that reaches at least a Dream Theater caliber. I will agree with you so far as Train of Thought goes, though. Were it not for the last three tracks on that album (which are absolutely phenomenal), I wouldn't like it.

  • Kevin got kicked out of the universe.

  • I wish there was a tab for the unison at 15:31. I've been trying to figure it out for so long but its so hard to pull it out by ear with the keyboards on top of it...

  • Last 4 mins of this song are clearly superior to the amended version.; better structure and more interesting melodic direction from LaBrie. Why they changed it, I really don't know. This has a passion missing from the 95 release...

  • @Calidosaurico...........well said dude!!!! I share your feelings completely! I am totally disappointed with the new album, and i think their new stuff is poor (shadows of former classic albums!) like Images, Awake and Scenes!!!! I agree, for one album, bring back Kevin Moore, and Mike........But i hear that Mike can't stand Kevin Moore....which is a real shame!!! cos they miss him so bloody badly!!!!!!!!

  • @Calidosaurico A Dramatic Turn of Events has quite a bit of what you listed. Jordan actually plays a bit like Kev on that album.

  • This video makes me miss the original DT so much.. great music. Thanks for sharing!

  • if we take sherinian rudess and kevin into only one keyboardist it would be the best of the best

  • i love jordan rudess and even i prefer his style while soloing but that kevin ´s progression are kick ass

  • always liked very much the atmospheres that kevin made with dream, a thing that Jordan doesn't make, even he is a better keyboard player... great version!!!

  • kevin is the best ever

  • james is so fucking money here

10:46-11:10 is some of the most emotional singing ever

  • @fledgehog Yeah, thank god they waited long enough to change those lyrics! :D

  • 15:55 wow!!!

  • Thanks for posting this very relieving snapshot of the beginning for this fantastic band. I first saw them after hearing Pull Me Under on the radio and was blow away. I wanted to see them pull it of live believing they couldn't. I saw them in 93 at Club Rio( Tempe,AZ) with Psychotic Waltz(very good) opening. DT blew me away but being a drummer MP is what freaked me out. Not only did he play with gusto but would sneak licks into the song without messing up. He is my Hero, all of them really.

  • i think it's pretty clear the best of DT happened when moore was on the band.

  • @Calidosaurico i hear ya man

  • @Calidosaurico You have the truth man!

  • I love Kevin Moore; but I must say, Derek's input made this song a million times better.

  • Kevin has something that Jordan hasn't

  • @Joselo1693 Its called feeling... I believe Jordan is a really good keyboardist, his technique is absolutely phenomenal... but, I would put quite a few keyboard players before him, I think he's not as creative as Moore

  • @claudiodxe yep, and original too. Rudess is a true copy of Keith Emerson.

  • @Joselo1693 YEAH! I totally agree! Rudess is the king of technic, but he is boring... Kevin and Derek fit better in DT IMO...

  • @Minimoogman I think they gave DT their original sound

  • @Joselo1693 too bad KM fell off the face of the earth and never made anything comparable to the stuff he did in DT ever again he might as well be a one hit wonder.

  • @VerdiKtagrad who said it? try listening to OSI. Original electronic stuff there is something rudess can only dream about and yet...AMAZINGLY SIMPLE

  • @gulag1979 osi is boring and cannot hold a candle to anything dt has ever done.

  • @VerdiKtagrad It depends on who is the listener. A fool ignores while the wise man listens.

  • @Joselo1693 yeah the hair?

  • @Holdsworthy Actually Yes hahahahahahahaha

  • @Joselo1693 both are amazing. . . I think jordan is ore technical. . . I think kevin got more feeling

  • @Joselo1693 ohh and apart from that. . . maybe better keyboard solo effects + better sound on that particularly

  • @Joselo1693 Just like Rudess has something that Moore doesn't. I love both of them and they have been the most musically influential duo on my keyboard playing.

  • @Joselo1693

I coudn't agree with you more!!!

  • @Joselo1693 hair on his head

  • @Joselo1693 Hair!

  • @Joselo1693 It's called GROOVE!

  • @Castufas finally the right answer

  • @Joselo1693 But honestly, they're both amazing. I honestly wish they could BOTH Be in the bloody band, and the main singer could just be a backup vocals dude, and they'd switch it up. But I love both this and ITPOE. Both of those, Octavarium, regardless of flaws, are fucking masterpieces of music and make most music of our generation just pale sadly in comparison. Its rare, you know?

  • Studio version chorus is the "hook" which is totally missing here.......

  • @PHALANX100BC yes, but this is prog in it`s fullness. Pop industry demands are on the opposite side :)

  • who is the keyboardist on the ACOS ep? i thought it was derek or moore is it Rudess?

  • @TheGodofguitar17 Derek Sherinian. Moore left after Awake and Rudess played one show with DT before he quit but he came back after they fired Sherinian right at the end of the Infinity tour.

  • @usernamessuck58 oh that makes sence thank you. I got confused for second lol

  • I think the better version it could be with moore on keys and the vocal lines recorded in the actual ep :)

  • 15:56-16:02- The origin of the Glass Prison???!!!

  • after hearing the studio version, these vocal melodies are pure shit. although labrie's voice does sound amazing

  • studio version sounds better, but this is nice too.

  • Thumbs up, if you think this Moore version is better than the Sherinan studio version.

  • @ralphyetmore Not at all

  • Oh man. I remember hearing this version from a Japanese bootleg before Moore left. I was thouroughly disappointed with the studio version. finally found a digital version of this track along with a great version of Mission Impossible that they did.

  • 13:09 solo ending, could possibly top the actual version.

  • Lol, stupid 1993 change of seasons fans clapping after carpe diem

  • Wow... Where is the solo before the 'I remember a time...' - It was bad surprise! ;) Listened to it so many times that you just expect it.

  • KEVIN MOORE is a genius and is this is one of his many legacies. It may happens that the criativity of this guy doesn't know any boundary.

  • KEVIN MOORE is a genius and is this is one of his many legacies. It may happens that the criativity of this guy don't know any boundary.

  • And one of the best Petrucci solos ever :D

  • I like these lyrics much better, too.

  • oh my god , never saw this version before

it's really impressive the number of amazing materials of DT we can find here in youtube

    DT the best ever

  • this is the type of music dream theater leaves on the cutting room floor, half baked compositions most bands would kill to obtain!

  • I love this version of the song.

  • 15:30 - EPIC !

  • I never get sick of hearing this version! These truly are the "U.S. Thunderbirds of Progressive Rock!"

ACOS should have been released with Kevin's parts intact as an instrumental cd.

The real question is htf did someone upload this bootleg to YouTube with a ten minute time limit...

  • @Zakariah1971 if you check through youtube vids you'll find ones longer than an hour too. 10 minutes limit is not for everyone. If you know what I mean.

  • @Abisso666 I don't go surfing youtube for crap! Only Kevin Moore era Dream Theater masterpiece's like this one.

  • @Zakariah1971 lol... all right, all right, just cool down. I was only telling you it's not strange to find a youtube video lasting more than 10 minutes, that's all. I love Moore's era too, the only really glorious time for DT.

  • Bootleg or not this kicks ass! That Baroque part of Peteucci at around 13 minutes leading into Yngwie double with keys launcing into one of Kevin's speediest solos ever is priceless now that Moore split the band. Shows clearly how Kevin was at the top of his doubling game and that Sherinian had no business even attempting these keyboard parts in the dumbed down remake of ACOS!

  • I gotta say, the magic of Petrucci's 7-string in the studio version was one of my biggest writing inspirations ever, especially since the bass was so easily distinguishable and was really REALLY in the mix!

Now that I hear a different perspective on the same song from only about two years previous and one different member, I'm extremely surprised and inspired!

    If only, right?

  • DT died in'94 when Moore split'

  • @Zakariah1971 :/ Meh, they're different now. But, still as good. Just different. :/

  • Derek sherinian dumbed this tune way down! He avoided about 90% of Moore's parts...

  • ...Those solos towards the end were probably the best thing I've ever heard in my life... sorry F# and onwards of Learning to Live but you just got destroyed by this amazing performance.

  • ... Better than the album version. Kevin's presence alone makes this better. I miss him... don't get me wrong, Jordan is amazing and he fits perfectly, Derek was pretty good too, but you just can't beat the original members (aside from James, he's better in every way)

  • a change of seasons for six strings!

  • DT has been terminated since Train Of Thoughts...

They never made something so sensitive and conected to their expressions after the Six Degrees...

They fell into the mainstream work of "Evil, Dark and Heavy" metal... all lifeless and souless songs...

Album after album expressing the same Metallica/Megadeth style only to sell discs...

SO be it, maybe DT without Portnoy will be forced into a change... maybe go back to the magic they used to make at this 87~95 time.

  • @demonight2 I thought Octavarium was a great album. as a "Music Conni-suer" tell me your thoughts lol

  • @whoareyou134 Maybe the song Octavarium would be like that... but not the entire album...

Its been like that since ToT... DT havent made more albums, they made 1 song per album...

If you pay attention you will notice that those songs have a "Formula" that the mainstream world has adopted... Its always the Crunch Evil vocal, The HEAVY riff, The bass only to give more Weight, the keyboard sounding wicked and the drums pushing you forward....

Compare the old albums with the new ones.

  • you can tell that the song was unfinished I think. for the first 4 minutes so far there isn't really a vocal melody...just sounds like freestyle. sooooo cool to hear this though.

  • This video's convincing me more that Kevin Moore should not have left Dream Theater. I also gotta concur with the guy who said that the instrumental section from 15:19 to 16:38 should not have been cut off from the EP section.

  • @chromaticism2010 I can't believe it's been a month and no-one told you. Jordan Rudess was the keyboardist in Liquid Tension experiment. Which involved Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci. They determined that they would just do away with Kevin Moore, and bring JR on for they thought he fit better. So Kevin Moore was kicked from the band, as was Charlie Diminici.

  • @whoareyou134 What does having Jordan Rudess in Liquid Tension Experiment or Dream Theater have to do with my preference for Kevin Moore playing this version of ACOS? I'm merely stating my preference for Kevin Moore being in the band. And to get your info straight, Kevin Moore left. He wasn't kicked out of the band and that's when they started scouting out for replacements, including Jordan Rudess. Get your facts straight first before trying to get into an argument.

  • @chromaticism2010 I thought I was giving information, you Prick.

  • @whoareyou134 Kevin Moore wasn't kicked out of Dream Theater, he left the band during the making of Awake. Derek Sherinian was kicked out of the band right after the Falling Into Infinity tour. I suggest buying the Images and Words Live in Tokyo and 5 Years in a Livetime DVD set! It's very educational along with the Score DVD.

  • This is the Master Moore version! Notice how in the end no matter how fast they push the tempo, even to warp speed, Kevin never loses taste in his note selection and arrangement! Genius!!!

  • I prefer the EP version, but this was equally as impressive/face melting.

  • Definatley one of James's best performances.

  • Jordan Rudess, Derek Sherinian, Jens Johan sen, and Vitalij Kuprij can not touch Kevin's keyboard solos!!!

  • Man I miss the that ibanez. Sounds better and looks cooler. The only the the music man has going for it is the piezo acoustic pickup.

  • this is by far, the best era of DT, with Kevin + John with his Ibanez guitar (a classic)... when they play it's obvious that they're enjoying it and that is something that I miss in the actuals concerts of dream.

btw the intro is actually amazing, like the wdadu days but I think the intro of the studio version fit better with the lyrics of the song.

  • So this is either

March 4, 1993 in New York, USA

    or

April 12, 1993, in Bonn, Germany

Only times they performed this version live.

  • @abstract37 And I thought I was a fanboy lol How do you know of such things?

  • Im glad it wasnt on Images And Words. It wouldn't have been the same, as John Petrucci had not started using 7 string guitars yet, and that intro and a lot of the song as we know it today would be impossible to play without a 7 string. Plus, i think Learning To Live was a perfect way to end an album as legendary as Images And Words, with the choral chant and how fades, gives me shivers every time.

  • THIS.... IS... FUCKIN.... EPIC !!

  • This is so much better than the studio version. And WAY better with Kevin Moore's mindblowing keys

  • holy i love this video

  • 18:55 :| O_O

  • That was the time were LaBrie could song live and was the most awesome prog singer

  • Man, I forgot how many jams this song had! For however many time signature changes there are, it's still so easy to rock to!

  • I don't understand a thing... i thought that videos longer than 10 minutes would be cutted off... so how can this be over 20 min? fucking weird youtube

  • Best Petrucci solo ever imho... The sequence starting 13:50 and expanding further after that is just brilliant. Sounds sucks, picture is blurry and shaking at best, but this is still a memorable performance and a great bootleg.

  • I would like to see them play this version in a near future.

  • YES YESSSSSSS!

  • i still prefer derek's version...

  • i still prefer derek's version...

  • Very well done... Mad props to the live feel and what not. I do believe that James is just a god among men and that John is a monster. Fab and good job.... more than I could ever hope to do with my Gm7

  • 10:58 :O :O :O (°_°) !!!

  • God help me I love this band way too much

  • Overall the studio version ended up being better. Still, John's solo is absolutely epic here, goosebumps epic.

  • 17:23

from this part to the end is WAY to better than the studio version

  • the EP version has betters vocals melodies & lyrics..anyway, there´re some parts in this version that rocks, too bad they didn´t use them on the definitive version. 15:30-16:37 awesome Stratovarious rock!...17:23-17:45 a little Rhapsody style..what do you think?

  • can't figure out which i like better

  • Don't like this as much as the EP. It's probably the lack of a 7 string and the fact that I prefer Derek over Kevin anyday.

  • Well, heheh, Kevin wrote the keyboard part for Change of Seasons, Derek just recorded it...

  • This is my favorite era from Dream Theater.

  • mine too !!...and lots of fans believe me

  • kewl...

  • you can tell this is before ACOSep, DT would never skew the song so much. still awesome!

  • i miss this DT

  • @panamanian911

You'll miss it even more now that PORTNOY HAS LEFY THE BAND...

  • @rhxt1002 I know.. it's fucking bullshit

  • I liked the song but i think the studio version is better (except for the inevitable summer part, Kevin Moore is the best :D)

Im ny opinion, the another world and crimson sunset sections in the EP are better then this one.

  • I heard this back in th day and was thoughouly disappointed in the studio version. I've been looking for this version ever since.

  • I'm a bigger fan of rudess: but damn that solo of KM after JP's solo at 15:56 was just beautiful.

  • God! The mellow part sounds even betty then EP version!

  • so prog.. :D:D:D 0:34 - 0:45 !!! amazing.. DT.

  • so was there ever an original studio demo made of it?

  • Yes. The studio demo is available on the bootleg "Antiquities". Mind you, that bootleg is rare, as only 500 copies were ever pressed and distributed.

  • i like this a little better

  • LOL at 16:20 John Myung!

  • 15:55 - Malmsteen Section??? LOL

  • i can kinda see why they cut that T___T

  • why?

  • @didiridou you know........ i dont know.............

i dont even know why ide comment in such a way.......... i dont remember even posting that O_o

  • I guess that's why they cut this part out lol

  • its mind blowing to hear the basis of ACOS and seeing KM fucking play it. blows my mind. and this has been on youtube for almost 3 years and this is the first time ive seen it!??? wot????? outrageous!!!!!!!!!

  • omg this is cooler then the album version

  • becuase kevin moores playing it

  • The video description is cool , I never would have known that.

  • This is easily their best song.

  • I wish that they hadn't cut out 15:19-16:38. It might not gel too well with the version they released in the EP, so I guess I can see why, but it was probably the most awesome part from that last interlude in this version

  • I like the later version better. You know. When they mastered the song and made it un-gay. This one has emo lyrics son

  • WOW! I LOVE THE THEME AT 17:25!

    Classic!

  • its like Rhapsody (of Fire) meets Avantasia!

  • @modificaz They met Dream Theater (?)

  • Listening to this version when you know every single detail and nuance of the "official" one is quite disappointing. For me there's no comparison, although also this version has its good moments, for example The Inevitable Summer which is better here...

  • Agreed. I kept on getting thrown off.

  • It's great to see so many people share the opinion I've had since Scenes From A Memory! KM was/is a great songwriter, and even though MP says he didn't have much input into Awake, his absence is musically and lyrically evident. I also thought FII was not a bad record. There's no denying Jordan is an expert technician, and he reproduces those old DT tracks better live than the other two, but his constant dive bombs and flight of the bumble bee solos really get on my nerves somtimes.

  • @maestrojon I disagree in fact that JR performs better live than KM. Sorry, but this is live and the lightning speed and precision of moore`s solo is superb. Rudess is lightning fast in using pentatonics, whole tone scale and blue notes but KM uses emotions and not preformulated patterns. Don`t get me wrong Rudess is amazing and the 2nd DT era started with him. Btw, Rudess` performance of old stuff on Scenes from NY is weaker than KM`s live performance.

  • the solo from 15:56 is really great

  • This version is awesome =O

James sounds incredible.... I miss this voice now.

Myung was a cool style then.

  • A lot of people say that this version needed working, but if they were to record it at the studio they would obviously touch most of the parts up. Just as they did with pretty much every track on images and words.

  • God this sounds like a Fates Warning song haha

  • the second half of the song is so much better on this version

  • great version......i like so much the the 3rd solo better than the studio version..........great ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • I wish James could sound this good forever.

  • yeah is too sad.... when i see videos of him with that kind of vocal power...well is very very sad...but they are still so fucking amazings

  • He clearly lost this voice he had, but I saw him in the UK one week ago and he performed wonderfully... I never heard him sing like that, and that was my fifth DT gig.

  • leeds?

  • i don't really think i could imagine this version making as big a mark on an album release for dt fans as the 95' version did.

  • 11:33

I stood outside in the rain for us, I tried to work out all the pain for us, I sat a lone and took the blame for us, My mind has torn and gone insane for us.....

    Innocent sinner

    Repeat offender

    Promiscuous promiser

    A faith lender

    Indecisive decisions

    Torn with heartless divisions

Watering all my visions of love

  • Studio version is way better.

  • Images & Words with 2nd disc containing Change of Seasons is quite something... :o

    Awesome!!

  • Pretty sweet song, that'd be sweet if I had this version on an MP3 as well.

  • way different and is not so nice too

  • I prefer this instrumentation, but the lyrics and melody are way much better on 1995's ACOS

  • if u dont like lebrie... stick with LTE...

  • The album version is better imo. Better lyrics, Labrie sounds better, its longer. The only thing I wish is that Labrie had had his range from this time for the recording. Otherwise the rythm and melody of the album version is better.

  • Personally, I kind of like the studio version better, but hearing what it could have been is so cool!

  • my pants...

    I just shat them.

  • yup

  • Maybe It was better that they recorded ACOS a few years after I&W. I think that this version had to be improved till the version we all know.
