Stupid (but malignant) blue programming. It gave children depression inlays. Then 'indigo' kids pop up in the 21st century, but their talents are the 'light and peace' they are (telepathically) programmed to encouage. (Instead of the moody blue and gothic angst of generation X.) A twenty year difference in age, giving to a social disconnect (in the meaning and affect of blue); providing black and white contrast (masonic dichotomy). Also look for the sexual subliminals.
My Grandad sung this to me as a child and he sadly passed away when I was nine, and since then I've been trying to find it, and I just cried more than anything. I miss him so much
Thanks so much, this song has always touched me. I'm 42 now and I remembered this song as a child and at that time I cried because there was no love surrounding me at the time. Thank you so much for posting this on youtube and God bless the songwriter of this song. Everyone wants to be loved and treated with respect. This world would be a much better place if everyone would just love one another and help any and everyone they can. I will continue to pray for love. Love Always, JazzyTLF :) :) :)
Young animators, learn from the master here- Art Babbitt. Look at the thought that went into this ultra-warm and lovable performance by the camel. Interestingly- among other choices- Babbitt treats the camel as if he were two men in a suit, with two different personalities- seen in the distinct dancing styles- for the front legs (who are clearly in charge) and the more childlike and spontaneous back end. Very entertaining...
@SurferJoe1 ...Still, he keeps emphasis on the camel's expressive face and singing with a lot of "quiet" poses, and occasionally the sympathy-seeking camel darts his eyes back at the kids to see how they're responding to his sad story. Charming, lovable, and real. I like this guy, and I believe in him.
Art Babbitt passed away in 1992. His modest gravestone (overlooking the Disney lot, quite ironically) quotes Shakespeare: "And those things do best please me that befall preposterously".
A beautiful job by the late, great Art Babbitt- thoughtful acting, loaded with spot-on caricature, pathos, warmth, and appeal. I got to meet him and talk to him once, and I brought this scene up as I had just discovered it at the time.
Does anyone know if this song was ever recorded elsewhere? Helen Reddy, or somebody? I've always had a strong memory of it from childhood, but I didn't see this film as a child.
@wyulittle Unbelievable. 20 year old mystery solved (and vindicated!)- can't thank you enough. My own memory for melodies amazes me sometimes. I wonder if she ever formally recorded it or I just saw that exact performance as a kid on some Saturday night in the seventies. If so, amazing that it remained on file somewhere in my odd brain. But when I saw this as an adult in the animation business, I heard Helen Reddy's voice singing it in my head immediately.
This camel was entirely animated by Disney veteran Art Babbitt, the guy who made Goofy into who we know him as, did the dancing mushrooms in Fantasia, did chunks of animation for Dumbo, among other things!
It interesting how you actually believe that you're looking at THREE living entities even though there's suposed to be only one. It really does seem like that's two guys in a camel costume, and the head is a third living being.
Possibly the best song from the movie (not that it took much -_-). It has a catchy, country style twang to it. Heck, they could be playing this on country music stations and it would probably catch on :)
Does anyone remember the names of any of the other songs the camel "Blu" sang on the records? So many years of my daughter Robin just smiling and loving all of the Raggedy Ann books, movies and songs.
I know posters love the camel, but I'm sorry, as a child I thought he was a little weird. Didn't he keep seeing other camels off in the distance? Even Andy thought he was crazy.
Now I can see the sweetness of the camel character as an adult.
The ONLY thing I remember about this movie was this camel singing this sweet yet depressing song. I used to sing it to myself, but until recently I had no idea where I'd heard it in the first place.
I love this song and the first time I heard it was Helen Reddy on the Muppet Show not knowing it came from this movie. Helen sings it with so much emotion its beautiful
I remember watching this as a kid with my brothers and cousins we always feel asleep on this very part when the camel starts singing the colors are all so mesmerizing behind him.
Oh man I loved this as a kid! I used to get so upset when the camal sang this song, I was horrified that the little boys mean mum could throw out his favourite toy! I remember very quickly getting my mum to assure me that she'd never throw out mine! just the thought of my poor 'rabbit' out on his own was enough to make me cry!
Yeah, I can't imagine imagine a mother who would throw away their child's favorite toy. Then again my family is of the impression that you're never to old to still love dolls and stuffed animals. My mom has a bear that her aunt gave her when grandpa was in the hospital.
Raggedy Andy and Camel were my fave characters in this film! I always found Anne a bit annoying and I never though Babette deserved to get rescued! But I was always glad that they set out after her because in the end, it was Camel who got rescued!
And,on another note, thanks for posting this video clip! I was just now thinking of my stuffed blue camel I used to have - I surely miss my Blue very, very, very much.
I still have my camel i had mine since i was 4 i got from my aunt/Godmother. Who just passed away this morning. My camel reminds me of her and my last physical connection to her.
I'll take this over obnoxious, trendy computer animated drek like "Horton Hears a Who" any day. This is what an animated children's film should be. I never saw this movie as a kid (it came out a few years before I was born) but it feels very familiar to me. My childhood was filled with stuff like this (music from the brilliant Joe Raposo, lovable characters that are sophisticated, yet don't try to be edgy and hip.) It's a horrible and at most times somewhat grotesqe cartoon-CN should be ashamed to show such garbage...no, nevermind that,w/the exception of Tom and Jerry - everything they show is pretty much garbage.
It came out before I was even born! I guess I just assumed it was in the 80s because I watched it in the 80s. I wish they would put it out on DVD, but when I looked it up on wiki, they said it was commercially successful and there are no plans to. Oh well.
... this is weird. i never new that there was a show about raggety ann. i'v seen an episode that was made back in the 1940s and it was about a blind little girl who was given that doll
although i do hav a very dim memory of a doll that looked like Ann when i was like 3 or so, and it used to giv me nightmares. i never liked rag dolls. they'v always freaked me out, especially the thought of them coming to life! they look evil, and just so weird!
This was my favorite movie when I was little. I found it on Ebay on VHS and I bought it. Believe to or not it plays very well. I was able to share this movie with my kids. BTW has any body heard of the show The Great Space Coaster?
i thought about this song and cartoon last week. this song has always been charming to me. for all you sesame street heads(1970's) joe raposo who was the genius behind of all the music from the show, wrote this as well. thank you so much for the post.
The legandry animator, Art Babbit, (ex Disney- 'Goofy'- and UPA- 'Rooty toot toot', on here too), animated this scene. Richard Williams, ('Roger Rabbit', 'A Christmas Carol', on here as well), directed, It bombed at cinemas though.
Wow Art Babbit did a fantastic job here. I've never seen such good animation. It barely seems inked. It's like looking at exquisite pencilling just all the way through. PS, gotta throw in a shoutout to my man Joe Raposo for scoring this song, btw. Thanks for posting him!
Thank you SO MUCH for posting this! I loved this movie back in the day and I've never forgotten it. This song was my favorite. SO sad that it's not available now. It deserves to be seen again.
I remember this film ^_^. Very endearing indeed. This song and "Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers" were my absolute favorite. I do hope this movie comes out on DVD~
I love this! This is from the days when kids' shows/movies actually had characters with realistic personalities instead of being all nicey-nice and happy all the time... (Doesn't the camel's voice sound like Mr. P from the Letter People?)
Oh wow! I am a great fan of Raggedy Ann and Andy! I watched all the little video shorts from the movie. Could you possibly upload the duet they sing together when they search for Babette? And could you also upload the song "I'm just a rag dolly" ? Those were also my favorites! Thanks
This used to be my FAVORITE as a kid! I haven't seen it in so long...I almost cried with hapiness!
I remember I wanted a blue camel more than anything...my parents couldn't find one anywhere so they bought me a regular stuffed camel and sewed patches onto it for me...
I'm going to learn the song so I can cover it one day. I actually remembered the whole thing except for the bridge.
Its so clever when you think about it. The purpose of children's stories are to help us cope with the harsh realities of life to make it all seem a lot less scary.
OMG!!! i loved this film when i was little!!! it was one of those films u watched over and over lol! LOVE IT!!!! the sad thing is i still remmeber all the words haha!
OMG...I never realized how depressing this song is when I was little. Cause when you're little you don't really sink this stuff in, just watchin' the blue camel dance around... This is f*cked up... But yeah, I LOVE THIS MOVIE! I also wish I could find a DVD version.
lol.. please, do explain to me why a cartoon character would be two people in a costume? Isn't the miracle of animation that we can create the unthinkable? (such as a flexible blue camel that sings)
You can tell the camel is two guys in a costume because of the way it walks. That is why there is nothing but cloth between the front and back. Also the guy in back, has to keep catching up to the guy in front. And I am talking about in the context of the cartoon, silly.
lmao... We can debate about this insane topic til both our faces turn as blue as the camel. You mean to tell me that I should believe the artist of this particular character, drew two men in a camel costume? No... I think the camel's flexibility is to show how much stuffing he has lost over the years from misuse and poor treatment. He just needs someone to love him and give him a new belly full of cotton. :)
Yes. It's an old sight gag dating back to the silent film era. Have the guy in back lag behind or amble into the guy in front of the costume. Usually a horse, of course.
omg... I cannot believe that I am actually taking the time to comment yet again. Snuffy on Sesame Street was two guys in a costume...( Jerry Nelson, Martin P. Robinson) the credits prove it. The camel was played by Fred Stuthman... not Fred-front half and ****-back half. There are three types of people in the world. Optimists, Sadistics, and realists... I am the latter of the three...
Stupid 500 character limitation. What I was going to say is that I have seen the technique you speak of and I know it well, but realisticly to argue that it IS merely an animated character played by one actor... and that is all. :D
While Mr. Snuffleupagus is indeed performed by two puppeteers simultaneously, Nelson and Robinson are, respectively, the originator and current performer of Snuffy's front half (and voice).
And the animator here is very clearly playing with the idea that the camel is two guys in a suit.
Playing with the idea "maybe" but watch it again... there is no way in hell a man could bend his legs/knees/ankles in that manner... clearly it is just a camel with years of use on him.
Well, as you yourself seemed to be saying earlier, clearly it is "just" a cartoon! I don't know that we really disagree here, but what I see is a duality made possible by the medium of animation: It's both a saggy, tired camel AND two people in a camel suit.
Just because a cartoon character has one voice it doesn't mean there aren't two people inside that suit. Not literally of course, I am saying it was drawn that way.
You are both correct. We are meant to believe this is a singular character, with one brain/personality, etc. A stuffed toy , brought to life. However, the animator is using for his inspiration, the notion of a pantomime/vaudeville character operated by two guys in a suit. Animator, Art Babbit , is having some fun with us by doing this, and a knowing aside to the older viewers. He retains the classic gag of the front being independant from the back, but it remains a single character.
this song always put tears in my eyes. as i look back at it now, i loved this song so much is because joe raposo the man behind sesame streets music, this was his creation. joe raposo a genius gone. rip

It came out before I was even born! I guess I just assumed it was in the 80s because I watched it in the 80s. I wish they would put it out on DVD, but when I looked it up on wiki, they said it was commercially successful and there are no plans to. Oh well.

... this is weird. i never new that there was a show about raggety ann. i'v seen an episode that was made back in the 1940s and it was about a blind little girl who was given that doll
although i do hav a very dim memory of a doll that looked like Ann when i was like 3 or so, and it used to giv me nightmares. i never liked rag dolls. they'v always freaked me out, especially the thought of them coming to life! they look evil, and just so weird!
videojudge01 4 years ago
It's not a show, it's a movie from the 80's. I loved it when I was a kid.
eleanorigby23 4 years ago
The "blind little girl" cartoon came out in the 1940's. It was a Paramount Famous Studios production, "The Enchanted Square."

I don't quite remember this movie. That camel kind of reminds me of Eeyore for some reason.

I think I might have seen part of it on TV a long time ago, I could swear I've heard that voice before.

2DD 4 years ago

When ever I can afford a DVD projector, I hope that they'll come out with this movie on DVD soon so I could watch it on the big screen.

This is supposedly the voice of an actual camel. Can anyone verify this?
chaarlee 4 years ago
yes, this was joe camel's cousin, before he had to go to rehab.
ReesiePuffs64 4 years ago 3
And who is joe camel?
chaarlee 4 years ago
the chain-smoking camel from the camel cigs ads.
ReesiePuffs64 4 years ago
I love this! This is from the days when kids' shows/movies actually had characters with realistic personalities instead of being all nicey-nice and happy all the time... (Doesn't the camel's voice sound like Mr. P from the Letter People?)
Lycanthrope777 4 years ago 3
What are you talking about? There was a sad toy only a few years ago in Toy Story 2.
snuppy 4 years ago
That camel DOES sound like Mr. P...which is awesome. Mr. P's song made him one of my favorite Letter People.

Oh wow! I am a great fan of Raggedy Ann and Andy! I watched all the little video shorts from the movie. Could you possibly upload the duet they sing together when they search for Babette? And could you also upload the song "I'm just a rag dolly" ? Those were also my favorites! Thanks
flapper27 4 years ago
OH MY GOD!!!
Cobblepot27 4 years ago
Has anyone been following the argument above? Can anyone tell me what they think? Let's start a poll
littleqwerty 4 years ago
This is so cute. I love when Raggedy Ann & Andy are dancing along.
gunbuck7 4 years ago
Its so clever when you think about it. The purpose of children's stories are to help us cope with the harsh realities of life to make it all seem a lot less scary.

OMG!!! i loved this film when i was little!!! it was one of those films u watched over and over lol! LOVE IT!!!! the sad thing is i still remmeber all the words haha!
licklepinkprincessx 4 years ago
OMG...I never realized how depressing this song is when I was little. Cause when you're little you don't really sink this stuff in, just watchin' the blue camel dance around... This is f*cked up... But yeah, I LOVE THIS MOVIE! I also wish I could find a DVD version.
Amarhyllis 4 years ago 2
animation like this makes me HATE pan and scan-was there a wide screen DVD of this?!
VideoJunkei 4 years ago
I just noticed the camel was two guys in a camel costume. Weird. Damn camel. Now I am depressed.
seapoidog 4 years ago
lol.. please, do explain to me why a cartoon character would be two people in a costume? Isn't the miracle of animation that we can create the unthinkable? (such as a flexible blue camel that sings)
littleqwerty 4 years ago
You can tell the camel is two guys in a costume because of the way it walks. That is why there is nothing but cloth between the front and back. Also the guy in back, has to keep catching up to the guy in front. And I am talking about in the context of the cartoon, silly.
seapoidog 4 years ago
littleqwerty 4 years ago
Yes. It's an old sight gag dating back to the silent film era. Have the guy in back lag behind or amble into the guy in front of the costume. Usually a horse, of course.
seapoidog 4 years ago
I am the latter of the three...
littleqwerty 4 years ago
Stupid 500 character limitation. What I was going to say is that I have seen the technique you speak of and I know it well, but realisticly to argue that it IS merely an animated character played by one actor... and that is all. :D
littleqwerty 4 years ago
While Mr. Snuffleupagus is indeed performed by two puppeteers simultaneously, Nelson and Robinson are, respectively, the originator and current performer of Snuffy's front half (and voice).
And the animator here is very clearly playing with the idea that the camel is two guys in a suit.
galenfott 4 years ago
Playing with the idea "maybe" but watch it again... there is no way in hell a man could bend his legs/knees/ankles in that manner... clearly it is just a camel with years of use on him.
littleqwerty 4 years ago
Well, as you yourself seemed to be saying earlier, clearly it is "just" a cartoon! I don't know that we really disagree here, but what I see is a duality made possible by the medium of animation: It's both a saggy, tired camel AND two people in a camel suit.
galenfott 4 years ago
Just because a cartoon character has one voice it doesn't mean there aren't two people inside that suit. Not literally of course, I am saying it was drawn that way.
seapoidog 4 years ago
Please, see message above about legs/ankles and knees... :| WHY AM I ARGUING WITH YOU? How old are you anyway?
littleqwerty 4 years ago
I don't know. Why are you arguing with me? I am 32. How old are you? Are you a single?
seapoidog 4 years ago
lol... not married but the last place I want to use as a dating service is YOUTUBE
littleqwerty 4 years ago
You are both correct. We are meant to believe this is a singular character, with one brain/personality, etc. A stuffed toy , brought to life. However, the animator is using for his inspiration, the notion of a pantomime/vaudeville character operated by two guys in a suit. Animator, Art Babbit , is having some fun with us by doing this, and a knowing aside to the older viewers. He retains the classic gag of the front being independant from the back, but it remains a single character.
Genius.
