  • i can dig it. way to go man talk about going until failure. i havent broken the 10 in a row mark with ring muscle ups yet but im on my way for sure check out some of my vids

  • Nothing against doing it with a kip but don't call it a muscle up because it isn't. People don't call push press a military press for a reason and same applies here.

  • because its a movement that simultaneously requires power, coordination, and flexibility. Done in high rep doses kipping is potent conditioning tool on par with high rep kettlebell lifting.

  • whats with these crossfit guys doing everything with a kip.

  • now do it without swinging

  • @foghelmut why dont you post a video of yourself doing strict ring muscle ups. instead of critiquing people who most likely have much more functional strength than you.

  • hey, remember when everyone could work out in their own fashion and not be giant smug assholes about it? this goes to literally every person that has posted on here, both the body builders and crossfitters. bodybuilders, you dance on stage in bikinis, however the focus and diet to build a body like that is phenomenal. crossfitters, you're tremendous athletes with incredible performance however you're far from the best in the world and you're not fucking navy seals

  • Show me 12 without kipping and then I'll be impressed. Not that I could do that anyway.

  • Muscle ups are the best exercise to build the chest and arms. They are one of the best for the abs too. It is because of muscle ups that so many cross fitters have great physiques.

  • Great job man. Keep up the good work. Check out my vids. Most recent attempt is 4 reps. I made a video with some cool background music.

  • Steve, you sir, are dense, in the less desirable forms of the meaning. Learn what crossfit is, learn how it is revolutionizing fitness, and then come back and comment.

  • crossfit is a joke, much like most other new types of workouts.

  • @steveteaches your idea of fitness is a joke. nothin new about workout basics done at high intensity. the point isnt to get big either. look at a navy seal and a body builder and tell me who's the better athlete. now go to the gym and keep doing what you do best- playing "who's in my mouth"

  • whats the song at the begining

  • 12 is a great number for this exercise congratulations!

However, I would absolutely focus on minimizing the kipping/swinging motion. This will force you to go through the transition (the hard part) from the pullup to the dip in a controlled manner, causing huge strength gains in your shoulder girdle.

    Keep up the good work.

  • Yes, it makes it harder. Yes, it builds muscle faster. However, crossfit isn't a gymnastics competition or about doing things slower and strict. It is all about power output (Power = Force*Distance /Time) So if I cover the same amout of distance with a greater force and less time, then I am creating MORE power and essentially doing more overall work. This is CrossFit. This is why we kip. In warm ups (speaking for myself) I do exercises (pull ups, muscle ups, etc.) strict to build the muscles.

  • kipping is pretty much abusing momentum.. slow controlled movements are not only for a "real" workout they save your joints from being jerked around...

  • Way to show your ignorance. Kipping is natural movements & requires NO "jerk[ing]" motion. But instead calls on explosive hip drive that is channeled to help with the upward pull/transfer. It is core intensive and requires a lot of coordination- things that do not come into play w/o the kip. As I said, utilize both. However when going for time, utilize the most effecient and effective one, which will be the kip (in most cases). I dare you to do 100 kipping pullups and say it's not a workout.

  • Ok. You're on. You pick a workout and I'll pick a workout and we'll video tape it. The one that has the best form and time wins. If you accept I will stay away from kipping because obviously you cannot do them.

You apparently don't think that this type of workout is adequate, so let's see.

"Truth is not found within debates, but within competition." So let's compete.

  • how could i be able to not kip? it just jerking around.. epileptics do it all day.

and the time it takes to do something has absolutely nothing to do with how good the workout was.

pull ups aren't a core workout, they're an upper body workout

  • Really? Epileptics have a controlled rythmic swing? Your showing your ignorance again.

Look, we can go off of form and speed (because form without speed is irrelevant in the real world).

So do me a favor- and everyone else in the world- PUT UP or SHUT UP!!

  • why is it " pretty much abusing momentum"? I have a feeling you had a gf that cheated on you with a CrossFit Stud-

Either way, kipping pullups are known to increase strength and coordination,

a quote from a blogger named Alexander

"1. You have more muscle groups sharing the workload

    2. You use them in a way that give your body the momentum necssary to overcome inertia (your body's natural tendency to remain at rest or move in a "straight line"). "

  • 1-ok, more muscles being worked therefore less work for the muscles involved. which means not as difficult for those involved.

2- why does not moving in a straight line through jerky movements give you a better workout for hypertrophy?

  • Awesome job, bro. 7 is my max but that's on a bar. I've never tried ring muscle ups yet. I've heard they're harder, though.

  • Personally, I think muscle-up in the rings are the easiest by far - as soon as you have the technique into place. I'm able to do 1 on a bar and 3 in the rings. No kicking or kipping, though.

    But great job!!!

  • It depends. I can do about 4 consecutive muscle ups on rings (with no kipping/swinging) but I can't do a single muscle up on a bar (although I can do 10 kipping ones pretty easily).

  • It all depends on the person, as to which one is harder. I have a guy at my gym that can crush bar muscle ups with no problem, but soon as you throw him on the rings he can't give you one. Whereas I can do several on the rings and cannot get up on the bar.

I think the biggest thing with those that can do the bar and not rings is the fact that they cannot keep themselves stabilized. Try just doing ring dips and ring push ups to get those muscles to stabilize you...

  • the swinging is hard 2 do, it works every muscle of your body

  • he might be swinging alot but regardless that is still a vary hard movment to pull off I ahve to give him props for even being able to pull off 5. Great job man keep it up!
