I know you were frustrated in your video but this vid cracked me up! The video was sweetened just right with sarcasm!
I feel your pain, though. Hate planting stuff and then seeing it just decide - "Not in your garden, I'm outta here!" Then those plants have to show a dramatic death scene while all your other plants are freaking out watching the others bolt.
Sitting here watching your vids...as to how long Strawberry plants live...about 5 years per plant, but if you collect the pups off the runners, you'll extend that 5 more years, 5 more years....just remember to plant the pups in a new area every time
Might help in the future, this is what I do to keep birds at bay. Place fake rubber snakes near your plants and move them around so the birds don't get wise that they are not real. Use this for my cherry tree and it works
I learned my lesson about late frost last year. My neighbor told us not to plant outside until June 21st no matter what books for our region say. He told us a few days too late! We lost just about all of our indoor starter plants.
MoonGazingRabbit, Every year it seems that perfect weather sets in right before the planting date and I get itchy to take the risk to jump the gun. Sometimes I luck out and get a head start..............sometimes I get beat up by Jack Frost. LOL
Awesome strawberries man....Mine are doing good, but this spring i will be trying some compost tea... Do you cover them in the winter?? I live in New Orleans and we only have a 2 month winter....I know you go through way worse freeezes than we could ever imagine... Your garden is so awesome man!!..
Newyorkischaos, I never cover them. The dried leaves form a cover and then the snow buries them in about 2 feet of snow for the winter. You'd think the cold and pressure from the harsh winter and heavy snow would wipe them out but they come back stronger than ever. lol
ps: Thanks for the compliment on the garden! I appreciate it.
Btw, I'm VERY RUDE, I've been watching Ray's videos and commenting for three (?) days now, but not once did I thank him for the inspiration as well as the cmedy relief that he's providing.
THANK YOU.
You have talent for narration, you should have a gardening program on local TV. Or national. I mean you say you don't work, what do you live of off? I am soooo jelous
Actually although I love talking about the garden, I never feel comfortable talking to a little metal box (camera). It just feels weird. I just imagine it as a small group of people and then I feel normal.
Btw I don't work because I retired early (at 46) a couple years ago. I sold 3 businesses and a building I owned. It's enough $ in the bank to live off....unless I go ape shit and buy too many video games. lol
With cover, we use this stuff called 'wuknina' in Polish (not sure what it is called in English). It's basically a lightweight material that you can put over your plants as frost protection whilst allowing the plants to breathe. Every garden centre should sell it and it's inexpensive.
Is that "włuknina?" is it in the form of a mat or bundles? (w kłebach czy w formie maty) anyway, 'włukno' translates as fibre. what type of fibre is it?
Ray! HELP! My strawberries are starting to get red and juicy and apparently the bugs have noticed as well! I know I need to net them to keep the chipmunks and birds away but, what about the bugs? I have these little grey/brown caterpillar things that have a hard outer shell like a stink bug. Do you have any tips to get rid of them? :/ I try to keep everything organic so a natural remedy would be best.
Holy crap, your bug sounds like something out of a horror movie. I researched the heck out of this but couldn't find a single hard shelled caterpillar on any site. Really sorry about that. I sent you a link to a site that shows pics of insects that attack strawberries. Maybe your bug is one of them? I hope it helps. Let me know, ok? Good luck!
Oh man, my bug isn't on the website! I'll have to do a video on my strawberries and I'll try to capture a pic of the stupid thing. Thanks for the help! Do you know an overall treatment I can do to get rid of other bugs that I'm sure will come?
webcajun has a soap/capsaicin mixture that you can spray on your plants that's safe and seems to keep bugs from munching his leaf crops. It's definitely worth a shot. If I needed a fast fix, I would definitely use that. You probably have the ingredients right now and all you need is an empty spritze/spray bottle. Check out his video named "Home made bug spray". :)
To frozentootsiepop, go to walmart's and go to the window screen dept and by rolls of fiberglass screening (looks like plastic screening) and cover ur plants with it, keeps out the bugs (i fight grasshoppers) but lets the rain come in, only cost me $7/roll...saved my plants that were getting eaten alive & really ticking me off, lol
Thanks koko! I'm sure that tip would have worked really well! Thing is- we had an excavator come in and level our backyard and truck in topsoil so that we could have a huge garden next year- but to do that they had to flatten my little garden. :( So I gave all my strawberry plants to my neighbor. I'm sticking with easier stuff like tomatoes and potatoes!
Ray, how do you get aphids like bugs off your tomato plants. My 4 plants have 3 tiny green tomatoes, and several buds, and alot of bugs biting holes through them.. I just need to know hos to get em off, i used marigolds but i have to wait a few days til the results outcome. And i make a pea plant trellis support like the one in one of your recent vids. The peas are holding on for dear life. My dumb German Shepard dogs like to lay on them. Some K9 trainers they are if they cant understand NO!
Wizechris, there's many organic methods to getting rid of aphids. I don't know if you want to use natural methods or if you're ok with just buying a spray to quickly get rid of them. Webcajun channel has a video on a capsaicin/soap spray I think? I personally have not had to deal with aphids ever. Weird, huh? I have a bit of a profusion of ladybugs living wild here and aphids rarely harm a healthy, fast growing plant. Do marigolds keep aphids away? Is that why you planted them?
OMG!! Frost in June! I suppose I should stop complaining about the heat and droughts in Ga! Garden is looking great Ray!! I was contacted by Mr. Heatmizer about sponsoring some of my videos!! :) - Mark
Not far south of you, there is a rain deficit and hot conditions. They have drilled fields that haven't sprouted yet. If it doesn't improve they will have dust bowl on their hands.
The 2012 cataclysm weather pattern is begining. Look out.
hey Mr.jack frost lives next door to me. didnt you know he was canadian. Only he would be able to handle the weather up here. LOLOLOLOL over with the snow now frost after frost after frost. What the hell does the weather man mean "we may have frost" we either are or were not. aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh
hey praxxus... just a tip if u like.. see how u said you had to weed the lettuce heaps.. maybe try 'plastic mulch' - just get a large enough black piece of plastic and secure it to the ground so that it wont move around and then cut holes in the plastic where u wanna plant the seeds or cut the wholes first before u lay the plastic down (watever's easier)... just a thought.. cause without sunlight aint no weeds gonna grow
Oh.....oops. I meant I thinned it out by removing lettuce so that the others had room to grow. I shouldn't have said "weed". Sorry about that. But I love your tip. Do you use that method? Sounds really simple and effective.
oh ok thats cool... yup i used it one time when i planted tomatoes.. i planted 3 rows of 6 plants but i wanned it to be low maintenance so i thought id try that... my tomatoes sucked big time cause the soil i have in the yard just plain sux, its not fertile at all and a little sandy but the plastic did stop weeks from growing! so it is actually alright... the downside is that you cant work the soil, properly anyway and you still have to weed around the plant where the hole in the plastic is...
Ray , sorry for the trouble you're having , but if it helps anything down here in the south we're having problems with too much rain. I think the weather this year so far has just been ODD. Hopefully mother nature will be kind and let the rest of the summer be good for all of us.
I feel for you. I dont want to have a pissing contest with you but we got snow. I will try to get out side and do a video of it before it melts. It came in last night and its still snowing at 10:18am its not to cold though, and the plants dont look to bad. I think its becuase I fertilised my plants before this white crap hit. I might have to replace a few things but, we will see.
Great update! Sorry to hear about all your frost troubles. It's really frustrating when you put all that work into something and it gets wiped out.
Here in NC we continue to have cool weather and tons of rain. I planted my beans in a low lying area this year and they've now spent 5 days semisubmerged. I'll probably have to replant them. Otherwise things are going reasonably good. I might even try some fall spinach this year.
LOL sorry bout your some of your garden dying off because of the FROST... dang, yanno...global WARMING is a killer isnt it LOL
Or is that global freezing? Folks are a bit confused nowadays lol
My peas were fried down here in the south and my lettuce is frying too... I think I have state warming and you have state cooling...whats this "global" stuff? lol
I just Finished Planting my garden yesturday. I to have been having frosts, I hope we dont get anymore. I planted my peppers and tomatoes today. I will update it soon.
I expected something from the Island of Misfit Toys but...... he didn't quite make it.
Did you ever see the Family Guy episode where Stewie turns into an octopus due to nuclear waste? And he pops out tons of eggs which hatch and are hundreds of little octopus' with stewie heads and they ravage the city? Yeah, that's what the little guys in the vid reminded me of.
So sorry for your garden troubles. I'm in Fl and am having a time with too much rain, heat and humidity. I am going to try my hand at growing tropical veggies. Good luck with the rest of your growing season.
We have the opposite problem here in the south. We have lots of days in the 90's this time of year. Morning lows are well into the 70's. Springtime occurs in March.
