This M5 has SMG - 'sequential manual gearbox'. It has an electrohydraulic clucth which is operated by a computer. Shifting can be done either with the paddles behind the wheel, or with the gear lever. That is why some got the impression that it is a manual. US spec M5's can be purchased with 6-speed manuals. SMG is better.
Cmon .. ppl who got those 500hp++ cars tuned from the factory, doesn't know how to drive them .. it's very rare seeing a drive redlining every single gear
His hand movements made it look like he was actually shifting. Your right it is SMG...
Oh and steptronic is AUTO w/ the option to select gears...its by far worse than manual...SMG is dual clutch, its a manaul trans w/o the clutch (no tq converter).

I heard that the Manual transmission cuts in on the traction control, and actually lowers the 0-60 time by about .6 seconds

you cant shift faster than that...
when you step on the clutch you are wasting precious fractions of seconds of RPM.
either in auto or manual modes...
at least that's what i know about DSG, i heard that SMG is praticaly the same thing
but YES, let's race with 2 VW passat, one manual and the other, DSG...
the dsg wins :D
because shifting is much more faster than manual...
