OK. Next time PLENTY of vibratoing. I was hoping this was instructive, and would encourage folks to be bold and use vibrato (tastefully) in their cantabile style music.
Thx. And here I was WORRIED that folks would get offended. I guess stuff like this can be a bit funny. I hope I can get more good stuff up on trombone. Always tons to say about this crazy sliphorn. Thx for posting and hope to see you online.
@GCrustypork the white tube is flexible plastic wrap used normally to wrap wires and create "wire harnesses". It has crimps in it, making it flexible and it is slit on the side so it can be simply pushed on to the neck pipe. The idea is that neck pipes always get crap on your shirt or your neck or somewhere, so you either tape them up or do something like this. I'm always tinkering with things that I think may be cool for this. This is one of the best I've come up with.
Thanks for posting these vids! I'm a composer just starting on a solo trombone piece and as usual am feeling slightly apprehensive about writing for an instrument I don't play, but this info is really helping!
If you heard my attempted Dorsey style vibrato you might think I'm being an ass. For a while I've been trying to figure out where too much is too much. I'll record what feels right/comfortable listen to it and realize it's not enough- scared of going overboard.
Exactly the kind of rap I wanted/needed to hear. I'm a MIDI musician wanting to emulate Trombone as right on as possible. I Googled your vid up hoping to get good input on the use of Vibrato--and I got it! Thank ye.
If you really listen to players like Tommy Dorsey, Buddy Morrow, (FYI replaced Jack Teagarden on Paul Whiteman's Orchestra),Sonny Russo, Milt Berhnhart, Harry James. Jack Sheldon,. Maynard ,on trumpet,valve-superbone ALWAYS played like SINGERS as well as great Woodwind players like Goodman, Shaw, Dexter, Lester, Coltrane. Eddie Daniels, Ken Peplowski, Dick Johnson, Desmond. Lockjaw. Johnny Griffin always played lyrically NOT so much technically....

Very interesting info! I traveled as vocalist with Buddy Morrow and The TD Orch. for 15 years. Buddy's philosophy of vibrato is that give a BIT more then you think it should be. It's not "corny" in the back of the room. He uses a combination of jaw/lip and slide vibrato..Buddy just turned 90 and is doing well and still doing some touring. If you get a chance, I think ANY student looking to take up Trombone should listen to Buddy Morrow Walt Andrus
Thanks for this comment; that is almost exactly my philosophy regarding sound in the hall and the way audiences PERCEIVE the sound of music;
The exaggeration we, as musicians, put into our performance is normally not noticed to the extent we THINK it will be. . .distance and acoustics of halls are good filters at removing nuances
Buddy is a great trombone player w many years in performance and recording--he knows what he is talking about; my trombone teacher Hal Diner was, a friend I believe
As a singer, the exaggeration of vibrato is more evident. This is why I can't stand Broadway type singers with vibratos you can "drive a truck through" with no sense of pitch. You should get in touch with Buddy (407)831-1171 and talk trombone. I think his Golden Trombone album is 1 of the best ever recorded.

Thanks for posting this. I've learned slide vibrato, pretty much since I started playing, but now I have to learn jaw vibrato. Thanks for the tips too. I've heard people play badly like that. It make me twitch with frustration!
Love the plain backround.
