This is the most beautiful music in the whole musical. Although the lyrics are not very pretty, the actual instrumentals are. When you hear this playing at the Las Vegas water fountains out front of the Bellagio, it's just breathtaking.
My favorite part is the huge breath right before the final gigantic notes. It really reminds you that they're singing VERY difficult music. It's funny. Also, I love this song.
@Taxrenn93 yes Carlotta is a better opera singer, but the part of Christine requires Emmy Rossum's voice rather than a voice like this :) and plus the quality of the acting and the actors style has a lot to do with the casting as well. You do raise a good point though :D

That's kind of the point, actually. Carlotta's been classically trained, and while her voice is certainly impressive and more "polished" than Christine's, it's all technique, no substance. Christine, meanwhile, has been trained by some guy who hangs out behind her mirror, and has had MUCH less experience than Carlotta. Even so, she sings from her heart.

I think it's so annoying they cast Minnie Driver in this movie. I think she is a brilliant actress, but part of being in a musical is actually singing. I mean what a waste! "Isn't that how an opera singer is supposed to sound?" If he can tell the difference between the style of singing between Carlotta & Christine. Looks like the producers underestimated the audiece's intelligence. Despite the over exageration, Margret Preece (Singing voice of Carlotta) has the best vocals in this movie. Her technique is fantastic!

Seriamente. Questo è il film più meraviglioso che abbia mai visto in vita mia. Dubito che verrà superato da qualche altro film, anche perchè rispecchia esattamente la mia vita comunque.

@MsDarkrosebud No but she did sing in order to keep it organic. She's a good singer but not many people have that range. It's nice to see a Carlotta who isnt twelve years Christine's senior

What a great team Simon Callow and Ciaran Hinds make as Andre and Firman - they are defintly my faves in this! Hope they get to work together again in some toher film - that'd be wicked!!!

The orginal broadway version is a little bit diffrent. Some parts are completly missing from the movie.

I actually find her voice pretty... but thats because its really fun to listen to. Emmy Rosson's voice is 50x better though.

I really like her voice, even though she's not really the one singing...I have respect for her because hitting those high notes are difficult(for me anyway) and she has a very pretty voice even if it "wasnt right' for her part I guess?

I think it's so annoying they cast Minnie Driver in this movie. I think she is a brilliant actress, but part of being in a musical is actually singing. I mean what a waste! Playing a role which calls for a coloratura soprano bel canto type singing and then cast someone who can't do it. Way to half ass a performance...

LOL I love how they all take one collective breathe at the end!! And some people find carlotta voice is bad, but actually the person singing it is very talented to sing lik that, i actually kinda like it really.

in reality, a smart opera singer would never use a corset during a performance, it would compress the diafram too much...

okay. just my opinion but i think that, if your gonna do the opera, carlotta is the definition of "opera" going very high in notes and pitches. christine is an amazing singer and i love this movie to death.. but everyones hating on carlottta. wtf.? its an opera, get over it.

@mcrawesome001 I understand what you mean. My father watched this movie with me. He doesn't know anything about music. Yet he asked a similar question. "Isn't that how an opera singer is supposed to sound?" If he can tell the difference between the style of singing between Carlotta & Christine. Looks like the producers underestimated the audiece's intelligence. Despite the over exageration, Margret Preece (Singing voice of Carlotta) has the best vocals in this movie. Her technique is fantastic!

Firmin drinks champagne from Carlotta's slipper because it's an old opera and ballet tradition. Supposedly it lets the drinker absorb the good fortune that the Prima Donna brings to the stage and drink TO the sucess of the show. Personally I think it came about because it's amusing for the Prima to watch her boss drink out of her shoe.
