  • The above contains a factual inaccuracy. Yes the minstrel performances were influenced by American minstrels (face-painting, banjo-playing), but the celebration on 2 January - the entire carnival and celebrations - has been around since most of the indigenous people in the Cape were slaves and had the 2nd day of January as their day off. They would gather at beaches and town squares and sing, dance and just celebrate.

    So the 2 January celebrations were around since the 1600s and not the 1800s.
