I figured the ‘Australians are English rednecks’ thing was more about the accents. Their relationship is very similar to the relationship between the General American accent and southern American accents.
That and I think that many Americans think of Aussies as grungy blonde desert shack-dwelling drunks, which is also consistent with the redneck stereotype....
