But do you know what I suspect has a lot to do with why Hardesty hasn't broken through yet? I think it has to do with a comment he made about why he hasn't had formal training in acting -- that he thinks it's an overrated waste of time that he doesn't need.

Now, while they may or may not be true, the truth is that guilds run most of the world, and all guildsmen want to hear that their training programs are indispensable. I think they've punished him.

I've seen it happen over and over again, that trade guilds and other assorted factions that control given industries will band together and literally blacklist people out for being "too good" without having gone through their monopolized channels.

It's basically Ayn Rand's worst nightmare. Also, remember the movie "Amadeus", and how Mozart was treated by the official mediocrities who he rubbed the wrong way by being too brazenly honest -- and just way too damn good.

I work in film, and the one thing studio heads, casting directors, and agents can agree on are never to hire impersonators, it is a golden rule in the business, there are too many of them out there, and yes its hard work but you'll never get recurring roles in the business. Extra work is extra work, and always ends up on my boss's cutting room floor, I see it time and again happen to actors more talented than this kid.

But, yes, I do see your point about it being a very different matter for someone to be able to handle truly original, first-time material that has never been rendered by anyone, and only exists in the form of words in a script. That's a concern for me about people like Hardesty, too. So I guess it would be more telling to see how he handles an obscure script...

But, beyond that totally legitimate concern of yours, I still also think it doesn't help things for anyone who has not gone through official training channels, to go around deriding and dismissing those official institutions, even if they are completely right to a good degree. There are too many high court composers in the world who are only too eager to hamstring upstart talents for using "too many notes". Surely you've noticed the premium on politesse in the industry.

To a great degree, I think this is a big reason why Michael Caine has had such a rock-solid career in the acting industry -- because he already comes from a working-class background which provided him with a strong sense of communism. As a result, as he wrote in his book on film acting, he understands the need to bend over backwards with shows and behaviors of convincing humility. That's why I think he would never have dismissed the practice of formal training.
