If you have ankyloglossia where the tip of your tongue is tied to the bottom of your mouth, then you may not be able to make an alveolar trill without snipping it.

On step 2 I can only vibrate my tongue if my top teeth are pressed onto the middle of my tongue and it also makes my top lip vibrate - I have a feeling this is not supposed to happen!?? Is this right?

@1Costello11 First watch the update video..The answer: No, not tensed, just firm except the tip, it must be loose, applying a little force just to elevate it to its correct position against the alveolar ridge. When a little flow of air (and voice) forces the tip to go down, that initial energy you applied, reset the tip to its initial position. again, and again...Then the cycle will be completed.

It's funny I can do stage 1, 3 and 4 but I've problems with stage 2. I can even use the alveolar trill in words but stage 2 is somehow more difficult. Is it really needed to do stage 2.

Thank you very much. I must admit that some German speaking areas have the rolled "r", too and I use both German "r" sounds; the uvular and the alveolar drill. I was just curious to see if I can improve my "r" a little bit. ;) Let's see if I can add a video respone. I've never done it.

Hey everybody, found the secret. To relax your tounge, stop using the tounge muscles. Instead, use your throat muscles. This will relax your tounge. Using your tounge muscles causes your tounge to tense, but if you stop using your tounge muscles and use your throat muscles to support your tounge, your tounge will stay up and still be relaxed.

More info in stage 2:

Lose the tip of the tongue and retract the tongue a little more almost loosing contact with the upper lip.

Use your voice, sream, yell, bark !!! don't exhale... let the sound start the trill !!!!

Calm down my friend !

These are steps to roll R's on the alveolar ridge (Stage four).

All previous stages are for you to see and feel the vibration, first OUT and then INSIDE

If you have had success on the second stage, forget about the first and so on.

When you reach the fourth stage, playing the sound followed by a vowel, you're done,

Now to fix, practice with words that begin with r: Ratón, radio, rama, reno, rompe, rima, ruso.

Note: The tip of the tongue vibrates ALWAYS USE LOUD VOICE

@RSpanishLearn maybe because the air goes away through the vacancies of the teeth ? i can now do the air trill but the air seems to blow right out of the holes ( lost-tooth cavities ) so easily that never enough for me to do a smooth trill, also, how to transform air trill into vowel trill ? i noticed that this problem is quite common among beginners, can you answer this for us too ? thank you very much.

use a loud humming sound, trill it !!... suddenly Separate the tongue of the upper lip maintaining humming sound, you've got there the r wirh a vowel sound.

Note: I bet that the tip of your tongue is very tense, please Instead, loosen it. If it does not trill, try screams, barks any sudden sound that your neighbor can hear you. !!!!
