  • in 1947, my dad took me to the worcester airport to see my first ever plane take off ,i was 5 guess what it was :) .. got bit of course ,, flew a little as a youngin ,,,, thx

  • Way too little thrust, lucky it didn't crash. Should have listened to the old man on the left.

  • What does a DC-3 cost per flight hour to operate these days? The planes seem to be bargains, but I'm wondering what the cost involved in owning one would be.

  • I've really been enjoying watching a few of your videos about the ferry mission with the DC-3. That must have been a wonderful experience with your Dad. I especially enjoyed the take-off on this video - I have the speakers turned up pretty high to hear your voices and the sub-woofer made enough of the junk laying on my desk buzz that it really did sound and almost feel like I was there. Thanks for posting!

  • LOL, 'ooh he got the model flying!!'

  • That was great.

  • LOL THAT WAS SO FUNNY WHAT HE SAID AFTER TAKEOFF LOL

  • How much of an "S" must one steer to taxi a DC-3 and see where you're going?

  • @94z07 not really an issue in multi tail draggers. There is no need for a long nose to house an engine up front and your sitting so far forward in the fuselage!

  • Definitely my favourite part of this video - when the First Officer says at the end 'his buddies were probably saying 'oh he got the model flyin' :) made me laugh

  • Man I miss flying. Hearing the ATC chatter and the engines makes me want to get back in it.

  • What a lovely sound from the engines

  • Good point. As I remember, the throttles were so misaligned on this ferry flight that I had to think of how I'd bring them up. At any rate, they were never firewalled.

  • Said "we gotta little crosswind from the right so I'll bring them up evenly, well a little more lead the left"? Was a stiff wind slight from the right (10 degrees off from right, 17-22knots) but in a twin counterintuitively you bring up the right engine first and stay a bit ahead with it until both are firewalled. See the crosswind is pushing on that mammoth vertical stabilizer from the right, pushing the tail left and nose right, needing more power from right engine to stay centerline.

  • Must have really made that kid's day! Another great clip, thanks for posting.

  • excelent!!!!!

  • This is by far the greatest example of fun by a Pilot/Co-Pilot/Air Control I could imagine! I'm not a pilot, however I love the DC-3/C-47 and I hope that boy dreams of the skies like I do! Great video fly4fun! Amazing piece of history you have in your hands!

  • This is why I love flying and being a pilot. Most pilots would be thrilled being asked by ATC to fly over someone's house to make a kid's day.

  • GREAT vid!!!

  • "we better climb a little, couse were pretty low"..... Co-Pilot

"we'll be high in a second... Haven't you ever doen a flyby??" -Pilot-

  • @aowen1609 Not exactly. I told him we'd be flying over the cliff in a moment and then we'd be about 1,500 feet high. But I like your version better.

  • My aunt flew this wonderfull airplane.

    Thnak you. great video.

  • Great vid!

  • he said a p-47 model

  • @TheodorKK Actually, he said "C-47" which is the military version of a DC-3.

  • @fly4fun aah. okay. its hard to hear the difference between a c and p in that noise

  • @TheodorKK the p-47 is a single engine small aircraft, one of the dogfighters of WW2. the c-47 and c-53 are military adaptations of the DC-3

  • what speed does the DC3 rotate at? 80 knots?

  • Gentlemen, I salute you.

In 1957, an uncle took a 7 year-old nephew, (me) to see a Lockheed Constellation, here in Sydney, Australia.

    The full tour.

    I never recovered.

Many lifes were changed forever that day, because of one small favour.

I have seen much of the world, as has my family, because of one small favour.

Flying, Military and Civillian, was been the springboard for the fabulous adventure that still continues.

    One small favour.

    A seed planted.

    Thank you.

  • @twinstu50 the same happened to me,in 81, Quito,Ecuador.

a gatekeeper let a 7 years old visit the mariscal sucre's plane cemetary, alone,no one to say "don't climb in here". i'll be booking 9000hrs as a flight attendant this year, and try to fly just anything i can put my hands on.

    gracias senor gatekeeper!

  • Wow, nice video Kent. I thought you were Kurt at first, looking at you from behind. I recognized Merrill right off the bat. :-) Pat Armijo

  • @cessna185 Thanks Pat!

  • Amazing, Thats really nice to do that for the kid, he will remember what you did for him for ever. And you and your Dad must have had such a great time....Spot on guys. :-)

  • ahhhh thats great man i love it

  • I love pple who do cool stuff like this.

  • Well, if you could continue on to Europe... :)

  • Great job, thanks for sharing! I can't believe some people had a negative response. Note the ID 10 T's were very few! SF Ron

  • LUCKY KID!!//......god bless the pilots fer complying....:-D

  • i think this is an awesome video, KEEP KIDS INSPIRED. im fasinated with flight, why? cause my dad would take me to a small commuter airport where they would pick up and drop banners that they fly over the beach. WATCH: JFK Aircraft Control, Bring Your Kid To Work Day, "Clear for Take Off!"

  • My uncle lives right where they flew over on the cliff. He remembers seeing that DC-3 flying over. The cliffs are called the Rims. I am a pilot as well.

  • My back hurts just looking at those seats.

  • @bb1134 No kidding!! I can almost feel a loose spring jabbing into my back!!

  • THATS Awesome! That kid will probably grow up to love planes like all of us. Inspire whenever you get the chance!

  • Heck.. I would have loved for any plane to fly over my house upon request!! My kids would love that!

  • Wow guys Gotta get Some Seatbelts inthere if you Go trough Servere Turbulence You Will Go RIGHT P THE CELLING :D !

  • The airplane had seatbelts, just no shoulder harnesses. But you're right, they're absolutely important to install.

  • Didn't saw Them By The Way your Blog of thiese Flights in the DC-3 is Very interesting i Would be awesome if you made soma others too :D Have Fun and Safe Flying!

  • Beatiful!

  • p.s. i'm currently building a heinkel HE111 H22 !!! how am i fixed ???

  • fantastic thing for you to do , well done !!!

i know a few heli pilots and crew and one of the crew members phones his son on his mobile when they are flying over

his sons mates love it !!

  • Kid will tell that story for years to come

  • wow, that controller had some balls requesting something like that on the air...

  • Well, it was hardly out of our way...

  • @fly4fun he coulda just cleared them for it; and they wouldn't have known. So letting them know was perty nice.

  • great video have about 350 hours in a stinson tail wheel! Love the tail wheel aircrafts!!!

  • And wiki says: Wright produced the R-1820 Cyclone up into the 50s of last century and Lycoming and Pratt & Whitney Canada too - under license.

  • Google helps ;)

  • Your dad is a great instructor, "keep ur heels on the floor", and if he didn't notice the un-levelness with the gears is because most likely he is well accustomed to that type of a bird, that it doesn't phase him anymore! Love your videos. Thank you for taking the time with your answers :) and I love the sound of those engines :))

  • Wright Cyclones?? DC-3 means Pratt R-1830's

  • Comment removed

  • @ minenu11 - actually early DC-3s did use the Wright R-1820 Cyclones, so this aircraft may have Cylcones. C-47s and later DC-3s used the PW S1C3G (R1830).

  • @dpnz63 - Hallo ;) - I think what you mean, is the C-46 Commando, but it's another Plane...

  • @dpnz63 yes - for example N587MB

  • I am sorry, however, it is "basic" airmenship to know the navids in/around the departure segment in the event of an emergency! Lost comms, engine failure, (aviate, navigate, communicate). You VFR pilots become complacent, relying on GPS's and so-on! What if DPT directed you to that VOR as part of the departure segment, what would you do?

As far as I, Capt for Jet Blue!

  • Lol i would love to see one of you airline pilots get in and fly one of these ga aircraft! I am a controller at jax center and a pilot! All you guys do is push buttons you guys dont hardly ever use vors now adays who r u kidding

  • By the way, how come you couldn't I.d. The VOR? Are you rated?

  • @davidsholem We managed to cross the country without ever tuning a VOR. Flew VFR all the way, which was a requirement for this ferry flight. Navigated using a GPS. A last minute request (as we line up on the runway) to head near a VOR that we could see — oh, heck. I could go on. Might you share a few of your recorded flights with me?

  • Take it easy! You said he was PIC!

  • Love the sound of those Wright Cyclones at takeoff power! Long live Radial Engines.

  • I am sorry, had no idea who he was! He appeared to be distractive to you during your climb-out. Also, he appeared to be disoriented when you called for the pre-departure checklist! He did not feel the aircraft yaw during unequal gear retraction! He had no charts, yet he commented on your altitude being low. He was PIC???

  • Whose the old guy? He should learn to keep quite and let the pilot fly !

  • He's my dad. His experience in these airplanes far exceeds mine, so I really appreciated his input. And he was the PIC on this flight, even though he sat on the right.

  • my dreams is to fly like this with my dad. side to side. i'm still 14 though and he's busy most of the time but i can't wait to become a pilot and fly with him..ur lucky.

  • @davidsholem Hah, that's what I'm gonna do, go piss on peoples dad's online.

  • transcription please?

  • Is it good to buzz a house with a DC-3?

  • Hardly buzzing when you're at 1500 feet

  • 1490 ft. I was just kidding.

  • sound is messed up :\

  • Awesome

  • Vectors?

  • well so long as the kids happy

  • This is real flying

  • Wow, you made that kids day!! Good Job

  • its audiable but very low

  • Very cool!

  • Cool, i used to live in Billings, would love watching planes come in over the rims.

  • What's that sputtering shaking thing going on at like 2:45?

  • sound works fine for me....

  • Listen to those radials. TOO cool.

  • I did to know where this aiport is.. pllzzz can you give me the ICAO i love this vid

  • KBIL. Thanks!

  • Realy special clip.

  • i just find it hilarious, that in a plane, you can let go of the yoke, and turn around to get a camera, but in a car, u would probably have an accident

  • What a great video...Thanks for posting that. :)

  • Awsome video, thanks for sharing! I am sure that kid was thrilled expecially since it was arranged by Dad, the controller. :)

  • I would LOVE to get an opportunity like this.

  • no sound?

  • Very Cool! You guys are the best. I've worked at CHS for the last five years and I can truly say that pilots like you guys are few and far between. Very cool video too, Thanks!

  • Ahh, you're too kind. I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't have done the same thing. I just hope the controller gets a chance to see this video.

  • seems to be that the sound of this vid is gone?????

    grt Richard

  • Strange. Someone else said that, too. Works for me.

  • yea , y have seen youre vid before (and reacted to it!) than it had sound ! (stillgreat what you do!, flown some dc3's lately with youre dad?

    grt Richard

  • hey its mr.kent didnt think i would find u here by chance. i have seen the pics u took on this flight. they were nice

  • Gentlemen..well done. This vid makes me glad to have a (small) part in the aviation community :)

    Thank you for posting:)

  • Man that must've been awesome for the kid. i agree retro planes are great. i fly out of OPF and theres a couple of dc-3's and dc-7's that do cargo as well as a former eastern airlines dc-7b which is being restored to be part a gov. funded program called living history which will b making crosscountrys around the u.s

  • Perfect Airmanship!

  • What a pair of champions! Would have really made that kids day!! I myself love these retro planes. Where I am training at, YSBK (Bankstown, Sydney, Australia) there are two DC-3's. One of them is parked in the paddock, and I believe it is for sale, and there is one in bits at the museum on the other side of the field. Truly beautiful planes!

  • man u had to make that kids day ............... i would have loved it . I am 15 I live in Michigan. and I have 2hrs and 10 mins of flying under my belt . My dream is to bush fly in Alaska My sister took us to alaska and i got to fly out of Talkeenta it was the greatest day ever......

  • Good luck Iffy. I suppose you've seen my earlier video of flying a Twin Otter in Alaska?

  • The Aviation community is awesome!!

  • Where was this at?

  • Great job guys....nothing like the sounds of those engines.... DC-3 one great airplane ! TCUNC76

  • Yes it is and So is the B-17

  • When I was younger, I knew a few of the guard Huey and Cobra pilots here in Minnesota, when they were near, they would fly by my house and circle until i would come out waving with a big smile on my face...

  • there is two dc-3s that fly over my house daily and i always wait for them and then i found out my friends dad owns the company that owns the two dc-3!

  • That's awesome. My dad took me to a few airshows and on a few plane tripswhen I was a kid. I wanted to be a pilot, and on a few of those trips, he asked the crew if it would be OK if I had a look into the cockpit (very much pre-9/11), and I was always in awe. In my experience, pilots and other aviation enthusiasts are some of the friendliest people out there. Good for you guys.

  • its really nice when you aviation guys go out of your way to make others smile..i know some of the them in uk and have the medical/search and rescue helicoters buzz my house daily

  • Bwahahahahaha!

  • Nice job fellas...

    JD

  • Very cool guys! "that's a request we're glad to do". Flying is something you clearly enjoy, it's great to see you're willing to help inspire others!

  • thats awsome

  • I just want to know how they got to fly a DC-3....that would be a dream come true flying those old birds.

  • their still widely used in the cargo industry

  • "oh he got the model flyin" haha! good stuff guys love your videos!

  • Awesome :D

  • Love Fly-bys. A couple of weeks ago the principel asked me if i could do a couple of fly-bys on one of my solo filghts and ATC let me. It was awesome, and know everyone knows that I fly.

  • ya gotta love them DC3's still kickin

  • That's a Douglas aircraft for you just Look at the DC-9 with Delta/Northwest

  • sooo cool, you def made that kids day

  • thats cool. my home airport KWJF does stuff like this also

  • man thats cool,i wish at our airport would be so cool controllers

  • well i would leave the camera in a nice place so it could record the flight!!!well the old mister didnt care much even to show to his family what he was experiencing--well a little selfish(lolol) but thats true--a little selfish or maybe he was scared so he just didnt care much about recording, i would record all the flight thats for shure, well i give a 3 dont deserves more!!!!cheers for all the pilots! i would love to pilot this baby

  • Thanks ...nice vid...i love the gear up comment..

  • Normal gear up sequence depending on the hydraulic system setup, one main gear starts up first then the other follows. If I recall, it was determined by which engine hydraulic system was selected, left or right, as primary. It's been 40 years since I was a crew chief on an AC-47 in Vietnam - just love the Goon and the engine sounds.

  • Pilots. We're all showoffs :D I would have loved to do the flyover myself, especially in the good ol' Gooney Bird.

  • what?

    what?

  • That is soooo cool that they did that!! Nice guys!

  • i can't understand what they are talking about up to 50 seconds - why would the atc ask about the V1? can anyone tell mewhats going on thx

  • Nah, that's just talking between the pilots on the intercom. Thanks.

  • love the sound of those radials from inside the aircraft. radial engines are a mechanical work of air

  • Very cool. I am getting my pilots licence and I have come across many good people like this.

  • Very cool that they did the fly over for the kid!

  • "Some of his friends would be going, hey, you got that model flying!"

    "Hahahahaha!"

Nice gesture to that young and aspiring aviator.

  • Glad to see this kind of thing still happens. Best of luck to the boy, and a BIG Thank You to the flight crew and tower personell.

  • i was just on holidays in cairns Australia and i went a air field and there was a p40 war hawk and a dc3 and down the side of the plane in yellow letters it said jungle skippers and on the nose oaklahomer gal

  • I once Piloted a Charter flight carrying a coffin. The deceased mothers son who was in the aircraft asked that i fly his Mother over her property for a final glimpse. And so i did. ( At the operators expense )......

  • Did they cal "80" just before takeoff? That's a low takeoff speed.

Lover the sound of those radials!

  • all i heard was 80 for v1

  • they always call out 80 knots to verify both speed gauges are moving and correct

  • ah. thanks. I was only on fixed wing for a while before I xfered to helo; take off speed not usually an issue ;)

  • Wonderful!

  • Very Cool! My late father was an airline pilot, and even had a DC-3 Type Rating. Great job; brought back some super memories of flying with Dad, and a couple times he came to fly with me!

  • I wish that could have done that when i was building my 747 model. O i wish i could!

  • I could watch and listen to videos on DC3s all day. What a great plane. Love the looks, noise - everything about them.

  • LOL! Fly over my son please.

Oh yeah, there's a cliff above him.

It's the details that kill you.

  • Your friend on the right is wearing the Lightspeed 30G? :)

  • I think that's right. It was noise canceling, I do remember that. I would wear the Lightspeed Mach 1 occasionally during the trip. The airplane wasn't really that loud. It probably had 2000 lbs of insulation in it.

  • This video hits very close to home for me. I live under the rims where the VOR is and a little east between rocky mountain college and MSU-B. Plus I am an Air Traffic Control student at UND and I listen to these approach and tower controllers all the time online. I want to work at BIL Twr eventually. Approach controller w/ raspy voice says funny stuff sometimes.

  • that is great that the pilot's cooperated!!!

  • I've never flown in a DC-3 but I used to get bounced around in the back of a Grumman TBM Avenger quite a lot and I survived that no problem!

  • You guys are really nice people...wish that would happen when I was making my Concord model...but that will never happen..haha

  • that's awesome you guys were able to do that for him

  • Aww, schucks. Any pilot would have loved to do the same.

  • I'd love to have any excuse to fly around a DC3!

  • its always a slow day at billings! lol, j/k nancy

  • slow day in the tower eh?

    lol

  • You can pick up an old DC-3 up in South Africa for roughly RAND 1,200,000.00 bro ... which equates to EURO 92,300.00 ; US$ 122,500.00 ; GB£ 87,000.00 ... depends on the condition. You're might want to look at the market in the UK at the moment bro. cheers

  • What?I live in south africa and there are no DC-3 for sale at that price,in fact your pricing is absolutely crazy, you can buy a good 80s c182 for that price!!!!!!!!!!

  • Easy Tiger...

This isn't some fucking life or death matter.

You'll struggle to find one in SA in any case 'cos no one will get there price for theirs - very costly machine to run nowadays.

The DC-3 - which I flew - had its fuselage burnt by two mugs trying to steal fuel out of it and this was some 6 - 7 years ago.

They were using zippo lighters to see in the dark. The plane was sold voetstoots for ABOUT that price. In fact some may go for as little as US$40,000.00 in the USA bro.

  • I've seen some of your videos ,you guys are great.

  • lol at "gears" plural.

  • How much is a DC3

  • Sweet deal man

  • how comes da cockpit is newer den da original

  • Because they update planes when they get too old.

  • da? den?

  • Really great of you guys to do the fly-by!! Awesome video!
