Maybe 99.5% of games end before checkmate, because the losing part can see it is hopeless to continue. There's the same concept in Snooker, where a player in principle could still win, but only by snookering his opponent a high number of times. Playing on is a waste of time so the losing part resigns.
Hilarious to watch, Mamedyarov's hand shuddering above the black rook at 8:30 only not to take it (nice tactic there which he obviously missed), and Aronian dodging Mamedyarov's outreaching arm at 8:40.

I think Mamedyarov had an excellent position out of the opening, but Aronian slowly outplayed him towards the end.
