As a male who's competed at the college level, I've found that is often the case when things like this happen in women's sports. Women are expected to be tough and compete with the same level of intensity as men, yet not exhibit the same frustrations or emotions. It's a double standard.
Had this been a men's team, and a men's coach, the response would have been simply "I don't condone it, but we'll deal with this in our next practice, end of discussion" or "no comment."

Sucker punches are never expected and are cowardly. Other than that, Griner is the best female basketball player I have ever seen.

The progression of events are 1)good technique defending, 2)elbow move to gain position for the illegal screen, 3)incidental contact when arms became tangled, 4) the unexpected sucker punch. As a male who's competed at the college level, I've found that is often the case when things like this happen in women's sports. Women are expected to be tough and compete with the same level of intensity as men, yet not exhibit the same frustrations or emotions. It's a double standard.
Had this been a men's team, and a men's coach, the response would have been simply "I don't condone it, but we'll deal with this in our next practice, end of discussion" or "no comment."

@TheWitchOvAgnesi: shit, when I played football we fought pretty regularly. one time in particular when I was in high school the other team set their spirit line up on our field. sure, it wasn't asking for a fight but they knew better than to do it and did it anyway, so me and a bunch of teammates went the other way through it and fought them when they busted their banner.
My coach was a class act though, and even though he didn't agree with how we did it he still stuck up for us.

Admittedly, the coach in this instance make have had ulterior motives... like trying to keep her own job. Dunno. But in any case, the interaction should have been the same whether it was a male or female coach and/or player. It obviously wasn't. And it mirrors everything I've seen and heard unfortunately.

Just before the 0:01 second mark, Griner was behind her defender, came down with her elbow with a "swim" move and fronted her to set a screen (a blocking foul). The player in the white got her arms tangled and pushed free in frustration. Evidently the player in the black took offense to this and over reacted and rushed in with a sucker punch. Sucker punches are never expected and are cowardly. Other than that, Griner is the best female basketball player I have ever seen.

Even if it were the case, and especially because what you describe does happen so much, then the way Barncastle reacted was totally over the top and unjustified.
My take? Barncastle was getting outplayed and dominated and got frustrated. Then she got smacked.
Not saying that was right either, but again, not surprising.

It's EXACTLY what happened, and you're right, many aren't called. But the price of being a dominant player is aggressive play from defenders and your composure has to be maintained. Barncastle was just doing her job and Griner couldn't handle it.

Check out videos with several seconds before the punch. The progression of events are 1)good technique defending, 2)elbow move to gain position for the illegal screen, 3)incidental contact when arms became tangled, 4) the unexpected sucker punch. Unfortunately this style is what women's bb is evolving into rather than the expected speed and finesse style of play. But who cares, it's just women's basketball.

lol I guess you can't argue sports with girls they don't know what true composure is and defend Griner, yet don't look to other athletes who have handled MUCH WORSE way better than her. Lebron, Wade, Kobe, Jordan, the list goes on, I have seen all of those guys get fouled incredible hard, and none of them has ever felt the need to punch someone in the face. And I'm talking about technical fouls where you get shoved in the back mid air on a lay up, and land face first on the hardwood.

@MP7A3 Same here. I'm going to Tech, but you really can't go wrong either way. Tour both, weigh the pro's and con's and decide which one you feel is right for you. Both are beautiful, have great people, and teaching facilities, and school spirit, but Tech cost a fraction of the price. I think you'll be happy either route you choose.
