I'm a huge fan of mma. I love Randy couture, but toneys Boxing is world class. It's similar to the silva vs sonnen scenario. Randy/chael are better wrestlers by leaps and bounds, but you have to get in range before you can take them down, and all it takes is 1 shot from either. So, what I'm sayin is for 15/25 mins, chael/Randy has to keep them on the ground, while silva/toney only need to be standing and punching fir a split second
well in my opinion toney is a quite far away from being world class.. his transition to heavyweight plainly changed that.. but he was a very good light heavy weight and welterweight.. if im right about the welterweight part im not sure if he was in that weight class

I'm a huge fan of mma. I love Randy couture, but toneys Boxing is world class. It's similar to the silva vs sonnen scenario. Randy/chael are better wrestlers by leaps and bounds, but you have to get in range before you can take them down, and all it takes is 1 shot from either. So, what I'm sayin is for 15/25 mins, chael/Randy has to keep them on the ground, while silva/toney only need to be standing and punching fir a split second

well in my opinion toney is a quite far away from being world class.. his transition to heavyweight plainly changed that.. but he was a very good light heavy weight and welterweight.. if im right about the welterweight part im not sure if he was in that weight class

@Sup3rShann0n i thought the same thing watching the sonnen vs silva fight. at the start of every round i cringed because that was when silva would nail him with good shots before eventually getting taken down. if toney can do that hes got a chance. obviously i dont see a random submission victory from him haha.

The other problem here is that Randy is not going to wait on top of JT. He will gnp the second he gets it down because Toney can't possibly have learned enough ground defence to do anything.

@Sup3rShann0n Yeah but the facts are that grappling is just as important as striking. If you don't have any kind of wrestling base or grappling skills and it goes to the ground you are fucked.. Anderson is a great BJJ practioner and thats why he won against Cheal. Infact Cheal knocked Anderson down. James Toney is one of my favourite boxers(especially in his younger career) but he is not a good overall fighter by any means. You can't expect to knock someone out with one shot all the time.

He was horribly out shape and didn't look like he had trained at all. I agree that Toney today wouldn't have a chance against ANY mw/lhw/hw fighter in an mma match. My point was that Toney in his prime, using his amazing foot work, power, and overall brilliant boxing ability would create problems in the stand-up aspect of mma for any fighter.

I'm pretty sure Reem has wins over both of them. I've never watched boxing because I don't find it entertaining. However I must admit that I admire how these guys move around and drop bombs like that from all kind of angles.
How is Randy going to take James down? James looks a lot stronger, and he is obviously very fast on his feet and can throw the most wicked combos with power behind them. If Randy gets within his reach, he is dead meat... Randy can only dive for risky takedowns. Hell I see Toney taking Lesnar without any problem.

Randy needs to get in Toney's striking range in order to do anything at all. Plus when those punches connect, how much power do you think Randy will have to lift or tackle Toney? As great a boxer as Toney is we wont know anything about his mma abilitys until hes taken down.I was a decent boxer but I know in a street fight if a wrestler gets a hold of stand up fighter the stand up guys in trouble. How good is his guard?Really its somewhat presumptious to think he will have much success against wrestlers and ju jitsu practitioners who have dedicated their entire lives to fighting on the ground,cuase thats where James is going!!

I love James Toney. He's the King of trash talk. I do have to agree with most people on here though. I also don't think he is the boxer to do big things in MMA. I'd love to see him drop somebody but I do think that he'll eventually get taken down and won't know how to defend himself unfortunately. Maybe his first opponent will want to try and make a statement against him and trade punches with him. Highly unlikely but if it did happen God help the MMA fighter.
