Wow, what the hell was the Blackhawk lined up at the lower part of the screen doing? Can't make out the name but he pinches back to the point in hopes of a breakaway or something and totally leaves Mario alone. I think it's Steve Larmer (#28). What a blown assignment. WTF is he thinking there?
@fuzioncube number 28 lol. I mean mario had is heightened hockey awareness going as usual but 28 was the only person on the ice that didnt know the pens had won the face off i think. Either that or he was gambling that the puck would be poke checked up ice wish was probably even dumber.
@smhpgh23 coffey wasn't on this team.Him and recchi got traded for tocchet, kjell samuelsson, and ken wregget.Los Angeles ,Philly and PGH had a 3 team deal with all those players and players from L.A..Coffey went to LA via philly, and recchi went to philly..
@Thorntonator19 LOL Phil Bourque? Are you serious? No way Bourque would have been on the ice with 20 sec left and the game on the line. The player along the wall is Kevin Stevens. It's Stevens,Lemieux,Francis,Jagr, and MR reliable Larry Murphy on the ice for this play.
lets just say mario and wayne would be 1 and 2 on the all time scoring list, mario 1 wayne 2 or wayne 1 mario 2, either way, they were the best to ever play the game
How can anyone choke against a team like that? A good half-dozen are in or are going to the Hall. One of the best teams, ever. The Hawks were just not deep enough. They never had a chance!
Lots of players from the Pens went to the hall, none of that Islanders 1993 team are, not even Turgeon. Pens should steamrolled that Isles team, they didn't, they lost a crucial game 7 at home and protected their still unbeaten record of three straight cups(let alone 4.)
My point is, the Pens relied soley on their finese, the Isles bullied them out of the playoffs.
Wow, when I look at that goal, sure Mario scored and yes the players on the ice are hall of fame players, but WHAT A TERRIBLE on ice play by Steve Larmer #28 on that goal. What the hell is Larmer doing out there anyways? They win the draw and he's like almost at the Blue Line....looks like he thought he could cherry pick...what a terrible time to do that.
You cam hardly blame the Hawks - who do you key on? Jaromir Jagr (future Hall Of Famer), Ron Francis (Hall Of Famer), Mario Lemieux (Hall Of Famer), Larry Murphy (Hall Of Famer), or Kevin Stevens (at that time one of the top power forwards in the league)? Choose your poison!
No doubt -- And he didn't even get to play that many games! He was out on injury so often =(( Imagine if he was in every game -- Wayne's career record would be SHATTERED!
Glad i found this on youtube. Its been over 10 years now since ive seen it but I NEVER forgot about that goal. The NHL will never see the likes of how good the back to back penguins teams where ever again.
Exactly... This is Jiggs McDonald's call for the Chicago Sportschannel feed. And I am glad that they jus sat there in silence as they showed the then Civic Arena's crowd goin absolutely nuts! That was a great day for Penguins' hockey. Once again, God praise #66... Marioooooooo Lemieuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuux!!!!!
Forgive me for contradicting a fellow fan, but Lang began his career with the Pens way back in the mid-seventies; at his Penguins Hall of Fame induction, he described stepping off the plane and being greeted by the smell of sulfur from the steel mills (long gone in '92)and wondering why he left San Diego. That goal by Lemieux and more than 600 others answered his question. Another nice call by him is Lemieux's first NHL goal in '84, worth looking up.
Steve Larmer, what were you thinking??? Look at #28 for Chicago...just lets Lemieux skate right by him, while he waits for a breakaway chance with 5 seconds to go. Horrible rebound by Belfour too...
Murphy shot from the point, save made, rebound by Lemieux, HE SHOOTS AND SCORES!! MARIO LEMIEUX! And the Pens take the lead 5-4. AW YOU'D HAVE TO BE HERE TO BELIEVE IT! -Mike Lange
I remember watching this game live. after the first pierod i thought that the Blackhawks are already the champs. After watching eithier the 2nd or half of the 3rd pierod i couldn't keep my eyes off the TV cause i didn't know who was going to win.
That was under Wirtz's ownership. Remember that collapse in less than 60 secs against the Red Wings not so long ago? Where you were ahead something like 3-1 and the wings score 2 Goals in 45 secs or something, then go on to win it in the Shootout?
I knocked myself out when this happened by jumping up and down across the room and hitting my head on a door jam. The Mike Lang (Penguins Announcer) call is epic, but this is the best clearity I've seen it in since it happened.
Mario missed 446 games due to injury!!! That's not counting the 3 year retirement!!!!!!! lol. THE Best.
