@ac360lover17 California Arts Graduates are notorious for reusing designs. The auctioneer has Smee's head construction and Merlin's nose and hands, and some copying of Stromboli's body motion. (Not to disparage this scene's animator Cliff Nordberg, one of the greatest action animators who ever lived. this scene just doesn't show him off well - the reason he's on here is because he waited a few years longer before retirement than his chums did. He was in his 70s and slipping.)
That film brings back memories. It's from "Classic Holiday Stories" DVD, and it was the first Disney film I ever saw when I was an infant along with "Pinocchio" which will be coming out on DVD next year as a Platinum Edition. If I can get "Pinocchio", I will watch these two films back-to-back from back in my childhood when I was an infant back in 1978.
Does the fat man remind anyone of Stromboli from Pinocchio?

Cliff Nordberg animates all of the Auctioneer, except the Chuck Harvey scene at 1:06.

Reminds me of the time I tried to sell my 1972 Mercury Marquis to a Persian car dealer.

That auctioneer is such a mean person. What a fatso!
TsWade2 3 years ago
The kid that does the voice of the donkey's owner is Sean Marshall, who a year earlier was the lead star in "Pete's Dragon".

If I were to grow up as an auctioneer, I'd grow up to act and talk similar to that dude!
Morty340 3 years ago
The auctioneer looks like a cross between Borf from Don Bluth's "Space Ace" and Tony from Disney's "Lady and the Tramp".
