Tiger maybe has not got past jack nicholas yet but in the time he has been playing he is ahead of jack on wins in all tournaments. He won the us open with a messed up knee and if he even wins one major a year which if fit is more than likely the way his career has gone he will still equal jacks record in less time than jack did it in. And with regards to Faldo and greg norman etc well great players but none of them could putt as well as tiger because when tiger needs to hole a putt he does it.
Soooo gorgeous. One of the negative effects of Tiger coming along is that people are going to forget how great a player Faldo was. Then again, golf has always had an inner circle of people who actually know the game (and would remember a guy like Faldo, or Price, or Norman in the early '90s, et al.), and who don't worry about the fact that a much larger circle of golf "fans" are clueless about that sort of thing.
What's arrogant about it? It's undeniably true. This is the sort of fan--usually a latecomer--who's more into celebrity, and who assumes that buzz equals talent, so Tiger must absolutely positively be the best ever. (He may be, or he may be by the end of his career, but not for the reasons these people think.) I still talk to some of these people who have no idea who a guy like Peter Thomson even was, or what level Faldo was playing at when he was #1.
Having said that, I don't mean to diss Tiger at all. As I've said elsewhere, he is beyond amazing, and as far as I'm concerned he's the only guy today whose mental game puts him in the realm of the all-time greats. Lots of talent out there, but nobody has Tiger's head.
Tiger Woods is the best ever in my opinion, and I have heard of Peter Thomson before. Its not just us in the "larger circle" who believe Tiger to be the best, many of the legends of the game have also said this.
Well, your opinion may be better-formed than some. Or maybe not. As for the "many legends" who agree, I don't know where you're getting your info, but I've heard at least as many say no as yes. And you also have to factor in some of the people who are still involved with Tour business, and therefore are speaking promotionally. Some of it is tongue-in-cheek, too--like when Jack talked about Tiger winning 20 Masters events, or whatever it was.
Still, I'm not saying that it's impossible that somebody who really knows the game and its history might consider Tiger the all-time best already. (I think they're wrong, but then again, maybe I'm wrong.) It's just that the vast majority of people who I've heard offer reasons for that opinion show themselves not to know what they're talking about by about the middle of the second sentence. Certainly not all of them, though, and maybe not you.
Could be. I was thinking he referred to a specific number, but maybe that was on a different occasion, or maybe it was somebody else.
At any rate, I'd kind of like to see quotes from "many" legends who declared him to be the best ever. Most of those legends are pretty reluctant to make that call when a guy hasn't passed Snead's or Nicklaus's records yet, and when he's in midcareer against competition that wasn't what Nicklaus or Hogan were up against.
I _have_ seen quotes from some of the all-time greats who've said they've never seen anybody hit the ball better when he's on, or who say he's clearly the best now or the best of his generation. But I'm talking about whether a lot of these guys have called him the best ever.
Tiger is the best ever by a long shot. Athletes of today are just better that they were in the past--bigger, faster, stronger, more accurate--everything.. This is not an opinion, but something that's been measured by science.
Nonsense. You have no idea what you're talking about. The reason Tiger is so incomparable to the rest of the players today is not because he is bigger, faster or stronger, but because he has an incredible touch around the green and a ridiculous ability to perform under pressure.
The majority of current golfers are actually not that outstanding, but are helped hugely by technology. Give Hogan, Nelson, Snead or Nicklaus in their prime a go with today's equipment and they would be winning stuff.
@bizzman22 True-but you can only be best of your era. Faldo would be a world beater if he played today. He'd have better club, ball, video and training technology that would make him compete just as well
