1982, My first computer was a TRS 80 model 1. 16k memory, no programs, no floppy drive and DOS didnt exist back then. I spent 16 hours a day at home learning BASIC programing language to design my own programs. I had a tough time with Assembly language but I pulled it off, now I forgot how to Program in BASIC and Assembly. I wish I still had my first computer I would gladly trade it for my brand new laptop.
I did the same thing. I copied lots of programs from hot Co Co magazine! and recorded them on casette tape. The programs had line numbers. Those were the days!
Download Matthew Reid's exceptional TRS-80 Model 1/3/4 emulator for Windows. Amazing stuff and some great work from Matt Reid. Emulates the Trash-80 down to EVERY detail. My personal favorite application!
My very first real computer was a TRS-80 Model 4. I spent countless hours of doing the same thing you stated of basic programs (I'm sure you remember Eliza?)
Ever play the game Liberator on the TRS80? I know there weren't many games available for it and I'm not even sure if it was available for the model 1 (man that thing was huge, a friend down the street had one)
Yes I had a Vic-20 and a lot of C64 computers. Hell I even had one of the SX-64 computers. The Vic-20 I ran a BBS on it for one day. The C64 computers did excellent as BBS computers. Those were the fun days. Oh I would not return to them ..but I had a lot of fun.
My first computer was an Abacus

We had one of those in my highschool in 1980. The other form of programming was on an audio type cassette. No graphics, only text on the programs.
That's when I started learning Basic.
