  • OK, who came here to see a BMW M5 race a BMW M6 and a Motorcycle?

  • Vectra drivers -.-

  • @Althegreat64 I seem to have a problem with Honda car drivers. Don't know why.

  • When people see you with a camera and a flurecent coat, they automatically assume that you an on duty officer, then they are quick to move out the way. I ride this particular strech pretty much daily, and it never happens for me !

  • Jesus those cars give plenty of room, tight scottish motorists up here hog as much of the road as possible...

  • This is why bikes are great :)

  • You're constantly breaking the 2 second rule. Do you think you're invincible wearing a high Viz vest? Also you don't know why other vehicles are moving over! It's nothing to do with you so don't rely on that for your safety. A commentary and video means nothing

I have 35 years riding motorcycles and your videos scare me!!!!!

  • God, I hate middle lane hoggers.

  • I agree with the speed of filtering here, its about right considering conditions.

Also while riding a 1999 bandit and wearing a hi vis and synthetic armour may be less flash/sexy it does make me look either like a cop or a courier and woe betide any driver who gets in the way of either (If london driving is anything to go by)

  • is this legal? because i live in blackpool and theres 2 lane roads on the prom and i filter and sum1 had a go at me for doin it, he even had the cheek to say fuck u

  • @insaneRideOuts666 i live in fleetwood mate :) tell em where to shove it theres a lot of gimps on the road round here its fully legal to filter in traffic car drivers just dont like it cause they hate traffic but are too scare to be free and ride :)

  • @fireyphoenix1989 ano m8 there too pusy to hop on two wheels :)

  • @insaneRideOuts666 BTW were you the guy on a blue suzuki parked up by near hounds hill ??

  • @fireyphoenix1989 ive got a suzuki sv 650s which is blue, but not been to hounds hill onit yet.

  • @insaneRideOuts666 Perfectly legal, but don't go to fast, follow the 20/20 rule and for fucks sake PAY ATTENTION when you're doing it.

  • Having driven on this stretch, i noticed that the inside lane became the 'overtaking' lane due to drivers' tendency to use middle and far lanes inappropriately. Quite baffling

  • God, I despise middle lane hogs.

  • is this a hobby?

  • is it no accident tha the rac control room overlooks this juction.

  • If your bike looks like a cop bike even for a split second then filtering is much much safer, do it on a regular looking bike and its a whole different story and Im sure you would agree

  • It seems to me a sad irony that the safest place to filter, providing its done slowly and sensibly, is the hard shoulder. Just pootling along in the 20's plenty of observations, do you think you'd get an NIP?

  • @rawhide901 ,yes you would be lookin at a ticket plus you may be in the way of 999 vehicles tryin to get up the road

  • I'm suprised at the level of courtesy here (car drivers), I have a red vfr800, always ride with the headlights on, red/black leathers, red/white helmet no hi vis' though and don't filter any faster than you. I was on the same stretch of road recently and did not find the traffic as you did. I found myself sometimes blipping the throttle to make my presence known. Is your bike white? re: Vectra, non use of mirrors, or deliberate block? She did pass right accross your headlight beam.

  • I had time to kill so i thought i would look back through the comments.I dont think i have read as much bullshit, lies, poisonous comments and utter drivel since my last year at school report! Some of those ridiculous comments have presumably come from living breathing adults, and i bet they are allowed to breed!

Good vid as usual, care to join my population reduction campaign? :p

  • @Chubcatcher That is the joy of being public on the internet. I do not mind, it is an open forum, I am not perfect and you take the rough with the smooth.

  • I have never filtered yet and this vid has given me the confidence to try it

  • I always move over for motorbikes, it costs nothng and there is no point in blocking cycles.

The government is taxing the motorists more than any other people regardless of indivual wealth. Thats why cars are so cheap in the UK

  • very good video

  • some good riding there, carefull and not too quick, filtering is completely legal, with slow moving or stationary traffic in a queue.

thats where bikes come into their own

  • Great. Im glad to see stuff like this on here cos when im filtering i always feel like im breaking the law or driving recklessly and it is very dangerous when in heavy traffic on a motorway when speeds are constantly changing. But hay looked like a nice day, :-)

  • dont try that in Jersey. the driver of cars here have it out for motorcycles. us riders are getting tired of people using their cars to trap us in or to cut us off. share the damn road, if you tap us, we are the ones going to get hurt, and yes we too have families, idiots

  • Interesting how most drivers give space to let the motorbike past. I like...

  • I just scribed to your videos.

    Can you look at mine.

  • Comment removed

  • I own both a car and a motorbike, the problem isn't motorcylists, it's the fact that drivers don't pay attention to motorbikes. It seems if it isn't big, square and on four wheels, it doesn't register as a hazard in the eye of car users. THINK.

  • Hmm.. its not motorbikes? How about the idiots that fly past you at 90+ mile an hour on double whites and a 50 speed limit? Fair enough for the riders that OBEY the Traffic laws.. But for the guys who dont.. They are risking Death everyday and its not the Drivers fault.

  • Comment removed

  • another great video, keep up the good work :)

  • think your just pissed mate coz goto get outa bed so early to get to work..try a bike get ther half the time ,unless ya run into idiots like you !! but guess if your ridding a bike thats one less idiot to worry about . you would be slow as tho! coz have to carry your sad attitude around

  • Most of the filtering on display here is too fast for me to be comfortable with.

As an example at 2.54 you are sandwhiched between the truck on your left and the red volvo on your right, if the volvo had drifted over on you for whatever reason you would be straight under the wheels, how can you be 100 percent sure this wont happen?

My method would be to hang back behind the volvo until he passed the truck and move then

  • Weaving in and out of traffic, and pushing into gaps that more considerate drivers have left for themselves is dangerous and illegal.

The traffic is moving well in the majority of this clip. So you should stay in your lane and obey the rules of the road.

If somebody changes lanes and has you off I would not be the least bit surprised.

Ho-Motorcyclists think they get special dispensation to drive as they like, apparently being in the minority makes you a specialist at the same time.

  • mmbilly - think of it like this: when motorcyclists filter in traffic, they are making the queue shorter for the other road users by using slack space in the traffic. Should bikes just sit in the queue and make the congestion worse? do you want bikes to queue up behind youDand make the situation worse for other vehicles further back. A few bikes filter past = a couple more cars dont get held up at the next lights. a win-win situaton. The clue is bikes pay no congestion charge.

  • Grow some balls, get a bike, then think about what you've just written.

  • Comment removed

  • If you had a motorcycle license, I doubt you would write such things. I used to have a car. I even drove it around the Nurburgring. The truth is that I find cars boring, just like Iike I find you boring.

  • @gjn7 Who wants to go around on a bike knowing that one hit at 100mph + and your dead. I would much prefer to sit in the front of a luxury car surrounded by leather seats and listening to a nice sound system nice and warm. Yh i've been on a bike and it gives you big adrenalin rushes but a bike cant beat a car

  • mmmbilly it seems that you are jealous, going on motorbike videos spouting shit! You sound like a fascist.

I bet your idea of fun is building airfix planes and painting them in slightly controversial colour schemes.

How about you shut up pissing and moaning, because the reality is and facts prove it, that car uses are worse drivers as a whole than bikers. On a bike you have to be massivly aware unlike in cars.

So now you have been outed as a cunt, put down the brush and get a bike....

  • why is always the bikers fault, take the other day i went through the middle of the traffic (if fact i could pick a few other times aswell) where the car driver uses their car as a weapon to attack the motorcyclist just because where moving on! then the prick who done this to me missed then had the cheek to call me the stupid one then drove like an idiot to catch me whilst having he's 2 year old daughter in the back, ye i can see why your upset with bikes :-s.

  • You are an idiot.

  • I like to ride a little faster.

  • Around here, that would get you a reckless endangerment ticket. Expensive.

  • that sucks..

  • That all looked pretty tidy, but I have definately read somewhere that although filtering is legal (in the Highway Code it says for car users to expect motorcycles to filter and filtering is encouraged to free up congestion), the police can see anything over 20mph as undertaking/riding wrecklessly. I guess it all depends on which officer saw you but it seems to me there are shades of grey. Also it's worth mentioning that if accidents occur the law tends to side more with the car user than bike.

  • Thanks for all the vids AB. Is filtering a grey area re- the law. Clearly roadcraft is key to making safe progress- but is it our (motorcyclists) right even when safe?

  • the vectra at 3:18 deliberatly tries to block the bike from passing. and fails to do so!

  • i dont think he was trying, he was just changing lane and wasn't clever enough to give the bike room.

  • Early stages - 2 second rule (not)

Later 20-40 rule, never filter at more than 20 and never filter when the traffic is doing more than 40......

Over confidence in ones own ability and feeling of invincibility.... go back to your Roadcraft.

  • what happens when traffic is moving at 21-39mph and you cant filter at more then 20?

Am i looking at this rule in the wrong way?

  • Unless I'm mistaken the 20 - 40 rule refers to:

    a) you should only move at a max speed of 20mph faster than the traffic you are filtering through and

    b) 40 being the speed traffic is moving at when you should not filter at all.

    Peace and luck mate.

  • Is it just me or does it seem the less people know the more they have to say ?

    Anyway....

    Thanks Nigel, great video.

  • respect to the rider friendly motorists. only takes a second to check their mirrors and move over a wee bit. as a car driver and fireblade rider i respect that ........ ride safe.

  • yeah, these drivers seeing Nigel meant they were using their mirrors even in slow moving, busy, traffic , Very encouraging and a nice surprise.

  • I bow to your experience Nigel but your filtering speed here seemed a little over-cautious to me mate. Not greatly, but maybe a tad? I await the beating.

  • I can't win........

    All the best

    Nigel

  • LOL, mate LOL.

  • You can and you have with all the videos you put up here Nigel, some people will never accept that what your demonstrating is how to safely acheive progress :)

  • Thanks

    Regards

    Nigel

  • Wipe your nose mate. : )

  • @wisenerl Go and wipe your nose.

  • @hornetobiker You filter at the speed you feel comfortable with, not the speed someone else feels comfortable with, no what I mean !!!

  • that free space on the left lane was rather shocking. Why people don't use it i don't understand. The only exception I would say would be the southside of the M25 heading anticlockwise. It's awful. so many lorrys. not to mention the elephant race they all do. overtaking the other lorry driving who's going half a mile slower.

  • A motorbike shop owner from Eastwood uk was banned from driving for undertaking on a motorbike in traffic like this chap is doing.

If he is a Police Officer then it just shows its one rule for one and one for another.

  • He was undetaking in a traffic jam, you can leagaly undertake if the traffic in the outside lane is traveling slower than the middle lane, in traffic jams. Need to read the highwaycode me thinks!!

  • @neiltemple Highway code is NOT law only a guide

  • as usual no real idea, just a colossal ego. try 10 years dispatching in London then maybe,, but for now, you are an amateur

  • They only move over for you because of the police bike your driving dude....I own a motocycle and no-one is willing to budge, its your status on the road that affects you respect you get...

  • Sorry to disappoint. I was on a black VFR 800, headlights on, wearing a hi viz 'H' belt. However I have my company name on the front of the fairing. Was Police, now glad to be out of it - Retired

  • smashing video!

  • i just wonderd are motorbikes aloud to overtate udertake lane on the left???

  • Ratpack81 UR a complete & utter dickhead U have no idea what UR talking about! Y would we want 2 ride around dangerously and put our lives at risk, we have twats like you in cars pulling out on us to do that! So next time UR in your little pussy bubble of a car, try and pay a little more attention and I think U will find that the ones who obey the rules are in fact the MAJORITY! You will also find that there are 100x more cars breaking all the rules than there are bikes. KNOB

  • yeah, only cos there are more cars on the road though :P...you have to admit, this guys riding was shite, i've only been riding bikes for 4years and I can see that...surely you can too? Look at the way he squeezed behind that yellow hgv whilst undertaking another hgv.

  • I'm from reading, but since being in round manchester for a year, its scary how littl ppl indicate when merging lanes up here!

  • Hi, just bought an ex Police pan and did the same route a week ago when picking the bike up from Swindon. The cars parted like the red sea like on the video. I was concerned about filtering and how legal it was, some of the comments have reassured me now. I would like to comment on your mention in the video of using the hard shoulder on the M42...

  • Filtering, so long as you keep your speed relative to the other vehicles, I can not see a problem

    M42 Hard Shoulder.

I know it was an experiment where during rush hour you could use the hard shoulder. I think it is now aplicable all the time. You need to look at the boards and signs.

  • Thanks for that... any thoughts on my blue and yellow ex police battenburg reflective stickers on my pan? Thanks Mark. P.S. Watched lots more of your videos since first post.. WOW very interesting. I have learnt some new stuff from you today. Would love to get some sort of training but the cost is a little prohibiting. Might have to save up.. do you cover the Wirral area?

  • Any person who, not being a constable, wears any article of police uniform in circumstances where it gives him an appearance so nearly resembling that of a member of a police force as to be calculated to deceive shall be guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale.

  • Any person who, not being a member of a police force or special constable, has in his possession any article of police uniform shall, unless he proves that he obtained possession of that article lawfully and has possession of it for a lawful purpose, be guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 1 on the standard scale. (4) In this section—

  • (a) "article of police uniform" means any article of uniform or any distinctive badge or mark or document of identification usually issued to members of police forces or special constables, or anything having the appearance of such an article, badge, mark or document

I look at the above as - You must take actions to make people believe tha the Pan is a Police Motorcycle and use it in such way as to decieve them into thinking that.

  • they thought you were a police vehicle, clearly and clearly you know that.....

  • Its obvious they thought I was a police bike because it is! You could say the same about highway agency vehicles, the amount of brake lights you see when a car approaches from behind. Also autoglass, scottish power vans etc have the same effect. My question was is it legal to leave the old blue and yellow batenburgs on. I have since found its OK for the yellow but the blue must be replaced with non reflective blue. I dont care if they think I am police, I just want to be seen, safe and legal!

  • Yes, I understand. But to my mind and it's not a hanging offence to have a different view, any vehicle that I and others REASONABLY think is a police vehicle and turns out to NOT be a police vehicle should be changed so it CLEARLY isn't a police vehicle.

BUT my opinion is JUST my opinion...not law and not necessarily what every one else should think.... You on the other hand are seeking to obey the letter of law, which is very commendable.

NO offence meant by the way...

  • NO offence meant by the way...

Non taken. Just an update for you all. Spent the weekend with a heat gun and scraper taking all the police batenburgs off to make the bike "legal" and blow me the cars still move out the way with a plain white bike! You cant win.

  • Fantastic stuff, you are blessed my friend.....

  • My dad used to have an ex-police Norton Interpol in the ealy '80s... amazing how many brake lights came on when it appeared in their mirrors! (When it rained you could still see the word 'police' in glue on the windscreen!)

PS - Nowt better for filtering than a C90!!!

  • can you explain as I know this is illegal and dangerous. I have watched the other videos you have made and for new bikers like me they are very interesting. Also as you are ex Police, what are your thoughts on leaving the blue and yellow batten-burg reflective squares on my bike... is it legal? (all police signs and blue lights have been removed or the lenses changed to white - orange strobes inside instead) Thanks Mark

  • What the hell is tis about

  • Yawn, pure gold, i'll save this one for when i'm trying to get my son off to sleep tonight.

  • AMAZING! WOW!

why u making a video of this?

talk about filling this site with completely boring useless uninspiring...and on to lane three....!!!!!

  • How I envy you guys back in the UK, at least you can filter, here in BC Canada, it is unlawful to filter, even if traffic is at a standstill.

  • he was wearing a flective jacket and the bike had a single light, so therfore they thought he was a copper.

  • There seems to be a hatred for bikers of late, from the chief constable who is and has tried every trick in his book to ban bikers , to car owners who likely have never been ona bike have a hatred for them, specifically when they filter through traffic whilst they still sit in their 4 wheeled sheds (and ima biker and car owner) when you are a biker and a car owner you are more aware of whats aroudn you and how to react to other bikers, and like the guy said in the video it was likely because

  • i am suprised to see that this is a legal maneuver.

i must say i am a very good driver, and one who respects all rules of the road and rules of courtesy especially on the highway.

I would hate to make a legal lane change in heavy traffic while cutting off a bike doing a legal maneuver. a bike undertaking a car like that just seems too dangerous. bikes are hard enough to see on the road, especially when they are cutting through traffic like that.

you wont see me doing this on my bike.

  • its quite normal, but its down to the riders skill and vision to see whats happening and adjust to that situation ahead.

  • its why the saying goes mirror signal manouver

check your mirror and signal before you switch lanes and you arent likely to knock off a biker. living in a country where its legal almost makes looking for bikers a habit. people are used to seeing bikers whizz past in congested areas so when traffic slows they expect bikers to be there

  • Considering your emphasis on safety in just about all your other videos, this one lets you down badly, and I am surprised that you undertake to jump the queue. The car drivers you mention aren't particularly biker friendly, they just don't want their mirrors knocked or paintwork scratched! I really think bikers should wait in the queue like everyone else. I speak as both a motorist and a biker.

  • I'd tend to disagree with you. Assuming the traffic is moving significantly slower than the speed limit, in this case national, it is not classed as an undertake (illegal), but filtering, just like one way systems that branch off you're entitled to progress where there is space. Provided done carefully, and considerately, filtering should be encouraged. Bikes queing, due to their quick acceleration and good brakes, will only bunch traffic further and make the ques longer.

  • She is right. Motorbikes are dangerous and all undertaking should be banned. I know someone who did 120 through stationary traffic. They should wait like everyone else. She should have openend the door.

  • they are not dangerous, its some riders who are not as careful as others, and to say "she should have opened the door" wuld mean you and that person are attmpting murder by knowingly attemptng to harm the rider just becuase the rider has tried to get past. And at this point its you and that driver who is a danger on the road not the rider.

  • I was filtering one day & a woman in her car flicked a smoke out her window & it hit my helmet. Came to a red light & i pulled up beside to say it to her(not too calmly i admitt) and her answer was that i shouldn't be goin up through traffic like that & that's y she did it!!!!! That green light saved her life!!!!!!!

  • lmao

  • Yeah its legal... So long as its not seen as reckless endangerment

  • Is it legal to undertake like this?

  • Its the same principle as when the inside lane on a motorway goes faster than the outside during a traffic jam. (i.e. technically undertaking if you like)

Its legal and recognised by the Police as such, but many car drivers don't believe it is.

  • From an insurance point of view, if a bike and another vehicle had an accident during a 'filtering' manouvre' where would responsibility lie? If I were you watching this video and reading my message I would be verycareful how you think about it.

  • If you google it there is prior case law for filtering accidents, but its a very grey subject. All sorts of different variables come into play like speed, road position, the layout of the traffic and position of other cars, road markings, signs etc.

But as an act in itself, its legal to filter.

Infact, I think the rider in this video is a Police motorcyclist. He is at least though an Advanced Motorcycle tutor, so will only do legal manoeuvre's, especially if he's going to show them on youtube.

  • I got skittled by a car driver's sudden lane change whilst I was filtering ( approx 20 mph). Her insurance paid out, and as far as I knew there was no quibble. Remember though, most car drivers don't look in their left mirror in this situation (she certainly didn't).

  • Yeah, overtaking on the left is legal in slow-moving traffic.

  • Passed my test a week ago and became one of the oldest new bikers on the road. I had my 1st go at filtering on the M25 yesterday. It is really nice to see a video like this so I can see what I am supposed to do to filter safely. Suprisingly, based on what other bikers have told me, the car drivers went out of their way to let me past.

  • It happens, but remember, for every 5 guys that will move out of your way, there will be a fool who doesn't like that you don't have to queue.

    Ride safe

  • Congrats on passing your test :)

  • What you did at about 1.45 wasn't "advanced biking". You overtook on the inside when the outside lane was moving more slowly than the middle lane and there was a large space in the middle lane for an idiot car driver to pull into without looking and wipe you out.

    What happened to defensive riding?

  • Even car drivers can spot a police bike rider, scared of gettin points so they avoid you like the plague.. haha good riding learning a lot watchin these vids

  • Thanks will send you a private e-mail

    Nigel

  • Can we see it? Be interested in your views.

  • just shows no one takes a blind bit of notice about how you drive on a motorway, as the rider said no one was in the driving lane.they all used lanes 2 and 3 the overtaking lanes. this really anoys me to say the least. just wish the police would do more about it.

  • It is amazing how that junction always seems to clog up like that, especially Northbound! Great video, and good driving sir!

  • Brilliant motoring, I really wish all bikers rode that well.

  • What ever happened to the 2 second rule?

  • For a driving instructor to be hogging lane 3 whilst lanes 1&2 are empty would you say thats appropriate? No wonder so many motorcyclists are involved in accidents when they're pushing through traffic like you did - where's the fire?

  • am ex Police motorcycle instructor, happily retired... (Excellent!)

  • where abouts are you based? keep meanimg to sort some training out.

  • I am based in North Staffordshire, but do travel the country, having recently done, London and the East Midlands. Let me have you address through the Youtube e-mail and I can tell you more.

  • Nigel,

Tell me from a legal stand point what is the cut of speed for Filtering? 30, 40, 50 ? It's something that i haven't really enjoyed doing here in the UK as the cops take no shit.(as u well know) everything is by the book. Unlike South Africa - a little more freedom or thought the same rules apply, but not always inforced. dean

  • nice & safe, whats your bike?pan,bm somthing that looks like it stands out well as people seem keen to let you through & what camera setup are you using??

  • I am on a Honda Vfr 800 - black, headlight on, with me wearing a hi viz H belt. I have bullet cameras front and back with a handle bar mounted switch for front and back selection. The cameras connect ia an av lead to a Sony DV mini camcorder. Please e-mail me and I can supply more information and a better copy

    Regards

    Nigel

  • a bit stealth like for a vfr, what line of work are you in to get the use of front & rear cameras?

  • I run my own Advanced Motorcycle training company and had an idea about 4 years ago, why not fit a camera, be it helmet mounted at first, to film all the clients, initially to review whilst out training, but then it develeped into to copying all the footage onto DVD for them to keep. Then I thought, rear camera and things keep developing. The most exciting bit, is I can now share the clips in this media - You Tube. Oh one more thing I am ex Police motorcycle instructor, happily retired...

  • Excellent video!
