The main problem with Goldman's bios ( I've read them all) is that he doesn't really like his subjects--even Lenny Bruce whom you can tell he dislikes by the end of that book. Also, the dude was born in 1927 and not part of the Rock generation--boy does it show too. His books on Elvis and Lennon lack any passion for each of their musics and any real insight to their essential characters. No empathy for your subjects turns biographies into little more than mud-throwing smear campaigns. Sad.
I love Elvis for his music and him as a man and the great persona. I think Albert Goldman has a right to say what he wants and seems convinced his conclusions are well founded. But I never heard anything but good things about Elvis and don't like hearing negative things about him.
ALBERT GOLDMAN WAS ABUSED BY HIS UNCLE LARRY WHEN HE WAS ONLY THIRTY TWO. HE WAS ALSO HEAVILY INTO COCAINE, HEROIN AND MARS BARS, AND WAS A REPRESSED HETEROSEXUAL.
Albert Goldman is wicked, etc. Let's take that for the sake of argument.
If so then it's idiotic for howler monkeys to scream at him. Even the host had to silence them. If Goldman's so wrong then they'd quietly show him up with each quote.
albert goldman, never wanted to tell the truth, he took anything negative he could find and built it up ten fold to give this very negative view of people who were actually very complicated individuals. there is nothing good or positive in his trash writing. a very low and hatefull person !
I went to the convention when Tony Prince burned the pages on stage. But he saved some pages... the ones with pictures of Elvis! It set off the fire alarms and Tony Prince was spoken to by the staff at the convention. It was great to watch the book burn AND raising lots of money for charity in the process.
Albert Goldman is, was, and forever will be someone who is SPINELESS and he can't take a few minutes of criticism and yet he wrote hundreds of pages of lies and deplorable slanderous comments about Elvis and others.
Albert Goldman always despises those of real talent and who were successful due to their own efforts and not a "formal education".
What a joke!!..He couldnt even appear in person but by video link..Coward!!
He verbally assasinated legends like Elvis & John Lennon in his vile books but could not take any criticism himself..What a wretched pathetic little man..Good riddance..He will not be missed!..Tcb.
Every Elvis fans should recognize this little dispicable disgusting little slimmy worm who I as a Elvis fan would love to spew some wonderful words at him!
@donn409 Michael Jackson, Rap/Hip-Hop, 'even had a African American entertainer Edwin Starr', I'm sorry are you trying to imply someting as I don't see what these references have to do with the iconoclast Goldman. Goldman to his credit gave rise to the idea that there were different aspects to these idols than the glossy airbrushed image that those with vested interests or blinkered fans would want us to believe. By the way rap/hip-hop is part of the african american creation RnR/pop.
@donn409 Nope, still don't know what MJ, rap/hip-hop or 'even the African American entertainer Edwin Starr' have to do with your antipathy towards Goldman. Goldman wasn't dumb, he just wanted to wind up dumbass sentimentalists. And he made a mint doing it, wouldn't call that dumb
@donn409 Pretty sure he made more dosh than those who slag him off apart from Bono who used the issue to make one or two of his customary cringeworthy quotes. No, still don't know why 'even the African American entertainer' defending Elvis surprises you. Or why Goldman should have turned his attention to rap/hip-hop. Why not punk rock or heavy metal? They were more in his timeline wouldn't you say. Seems like no-one else responded to that particular spin you put on Goldman bashing.
Goldman was part of the establishment that hated Rock n Roll/Pop and wanted to see it destroyed off the face of the Earth. He released his second ELVIS book in 1990. Why didn't he go after Rap/Hip-Hop like he did Rock/Pop?
The reason no one has sued Goldman is because he doesn't sell enough books to make it worth anyone's while to sue him. The only reason he got on t.v. was because he wrote a book about the greatest entertainer of all-time. It's obvious why Goldman didn't appear on this show physically. The whole audience would've lynched him on national t.v. They even had a African American entertainer, Edwin Starr defending ELVIS.
goldman's elvis book is pure garbage. i've read a lot of elvis books and none of the other books match up with the crap goldman made up. he has about 2 sources of information, one of them being lamar fike, elvis' bodyguard. even lamar says all his stories got twisted around because goldman hated elvis.
Sensationalism sells. Tell a dirty story, everybody wants to hear it. Goldman is an asshole. I was always told, you don't have anyhting nice to say, don't speak. Goldman obviously doesn't like Elvis and speaks matter-of-fact about him. Elvis isn't here to defend himself, so of course to shoot him down is fair game and Goldman made money off of Elvis' good name. What a dick!!!!!!
@salamonetalton Agreed. However, it seems that this guy likes to write articles about ppl who are not here to deffend themselves, he wrote a less than flattering article on Bruce Lee, it just seems he is one of these guys who likes to talk smack

@1365225 Silly arse.Norman's biography is the only work that mediates & balances all the myriad aspects of Lennons frighteningly complex personality. It has gravitas, insight & is in no way celebratory or sensationalist but has the ability to critique without compromising the author's personal views on the subject.Goldman could have learned a thing or twenty from him but felt it necessary to destabalize an image for the sake of cheap publicty & further his laughable image as a serious biographer.
@1365225 Why do you say that? I haven't read it yet, just wondering. I don't think there is a definitive book on John Lennon. But there are lots of sources, and I think they all contribute to the overall picture one is able to form.

I wouldnt wipe my arse with the pages of the disgusting book he wrote about Elvis.Venomous little shit of a man he was, every single page filled with pure venom and hate.
@shawent Yes, but turning famous figures into mythological caricatures is just as naive and stupid as gossiping about them. In the US especially, we tend to almost deify celebrities to the point that all their more interesting and human qualities gets lost within the myth. The more I become genuinely interested in a specific musician, politician, historical figure, etc, the more I want to know the truth about the details of their lives, not some carefully crafted public image
I agree ElvisFreak77. The first chapter where he describes Elvis slumped over and asleep in his soup actually had me laughing out loud. The book was a complete character assassination. He did the same with his book on Lennon. Before his death he was working on a book about Jim Morrison. He only ever wrote about people that were deceased. If he were alive, he would have a field day with Michael Jackson about now.
No! You can't say that about Elvis. Not Elvis. Not our Elvis. Not THE FUCKING KING!! Goldman you piece of goddamn trash motherfucker!! No, seriously, who gives a fuck? The guy can write what he wants.
Listen to Elvis's last two albums, The songs he chose reflect the internal pain he was feeling at the time....ie: "Never Again", "It's Easy For You", I'm Never Gonna Fall In Love Again"..etc.....to me some red flags going up.
...Elvis was, is and forever will be the one of if not THE greatest entertainers the world has seen, and the reason, I beleive that many people find this accusation as an "attack" on Elvis and will somehow diminish the greatness and impact he had on the world...a feeling of denial basically. I am a huge fan of Elvis and the way he died will not change how I feel about the greatness of his God-given talent! Only Elvis knew what really happened.
@gowestward1 You do realize that if you went over to a Michael Jackson fansite, you'd find that 99% of the people there would be making the exact same claims as yourself and you'd be ridiculed for even comparing Elvis to the "King of Pop". IMO, both were overrated in terms of their musicianship b/c neither Elvis nor Jackson wrote their own material or played instruments fluently. Whether or not they were the "greatest' entertainer is a subjective statement wholly based on personal tastes
Unfortunately, we may never know what really happened to Elvis on the morning of August 16th. Was it suicide? Elvis was heavily into numerology...and if you add the numbers 8+16+77 = 2001. Maybe this is just a coincidence..or maybe it's something more...who knows? Elvis's mother died on August 14th. Elvis's moods at the end were either side of the spectrum..bright & energetic to dark and isolated. I don't understand why people are so irrate over the suicide theory?!
No Elvis never wore diapers at the end. In fact it was exactly the opposite- because of the drugs he was pretty much constipated. At the autopsy they discovered he had an "impacted colon" in other words his colon was filled with a hard clay like material. Almost impossible for anyone to take a dump when they have an impacted colon.
Those who worked for Elvis said he spent many hours in his bathroom suite.
Albert Goldman was a HACK who hated Elvis, John Lennon, and Rock & Roll, and admitted it.
Goldman's books are his own vile OPINION & speculation with NO evidence, & you can NOT sue for opinion & speculation. People realized Goldman was a hack when he wrote an equally foul opinion on Lennon which Philip Norman expresses very well here!
Goldman got basic facts wrong, didn't interview the important people, manipulated the words of others, & listed sources not used in the book or referenced.
You know a man is a biased hack when he calls a person's mother & grandmother names like he did with Elvis! Everybody had nasty little pet names!
Elvis was addicted to prescribed drugs from a greedy doctor & enablers, but he wasn't a street "junkie," and he was NOT simple minded. He didn't have a big education like this idiot, but he did well on his tests for the army, made Sgt. in 2 years with glowing fitness reports, & he read books on religions & philosophy over everyone's head!
Elvis was also NOT an invalid. Elvis was not in the best shape of his life, but performed hundreds of concerts the last year of his life--not an invalid! And he certainly had not lost his voice!
Elvis did NOT commit suicide! How dare this ass say Elvis had nothing to live for & no choice! Elvis was the one with a beautiful 20 yr. old fiance in his bed! There are many reason's to know Elvis did not commit suicide, & the main one is his daughter was in the next room!!
Goldman did NOT tell the truth--just his own twisted OPINION! Plus the book "Elvis What Happened?" by Red & Sonny West was NOT the same.I think they actually cared about Elvis, & somebody should have spoken up sooner about what was happening to Elvis. It told about Elvis's drug use and his many, many women which I thought everybody knew about, but Goldman uses a negative and demeaning language that denigrates Elvis as a man that their book does not!
@epmelodygirl he was also making plans for a world tour that was gonna take place in 1980. he planned to take a couple years off to get into shape. so he could be the levis of old. the tour he was going to embark on at the time of his deathw as going to be his final tour of the 70's thats why the tour was supposed to end in memphis back where it all began. even bill belew elvis's jumpsuit designer spoke of it in his interviews.
I read Mr Goldmans book and found it interesting and his book is pretty much in line with Red Wests book 'Elvis What Happened'.
I mean his bodyguards got the same treatment of name calling, but they lived with the man 24 hours a day.
looks like it more easier to believe a myth of someone than the truth. and why? just because they were famous?. I still believe if all of its not true then the Presley estate or family have got all the money they need to have sued.
@certificate18flix I have it too, and read it when it first came out back in 81, and it was so disgusting I remember it to this day, Elvis never would attempt suicide, trash pure trash and he knows it!!!! And maybe nobody sued because he is not worth it!
The main problem with Goldman's bios ( I've read them all) is that he doesn't really like his subjects--even Lenny Bruce whom you can tell he dislikes by the end of that book. Also, the dude was born in 1927 and not part of the Rock generation--boy does it show too.
