  • Anyone would have thought that TV-am overbid considering that they lost (/sarcasm)

  • Comment removed

  • @Tripp1993 Yeah, there has been a lot of speculation on DigitalSpy on wether they should use an updated version of the 70s logo. Personally, i liked Thames' logo from the early 90s best.

  • Glad Anglia is still going here, its been on since the 50's

  • The creation of the ITC and the loss of Thames was the death of ITV.

They were too busy thinking about making money with Carlton focussing more on buying other TV companies than making their own output. When your best original comission is Police Camera Action the alarm bells should be ringing.

How ironic that Thames merged with Talkback to become the biggest independent programme maker in the country.

  • @TheShelt Glad Thames merged with Talkback, you wouldnt want a company like that dissapearing.

  • Now they're seperating!

  • Camerons Carlton ... now coming to a NHS near you.

  • Thames should have never lost that franchise. What a mistake.

  • If Thames had never lost their franchise, Central, Westcountry, and HTV might still be independent. Stupid Carlton, it's their fault the regional names are gone!

  • Yep. The strongest and best station's closing destroyed the identity of the franchise. Carlton were no match.

  • Great memories and thanks for uploading this.

  • Great News clip of the ITV franchise auctions.

  • RIP Carol you are sorely missed.

  • Is she dead?

  • Yes she died on 8/3/08 after a stroke.

  • Her daughter also died in a parachute accident earlier

  • As a kid at the time, the ITN crew were sort of part of the family to me. Suchet, Snow, Sissons, Stewart, Armstrong, Carpenter, Zeinab, Sir Alastair, old Sandy Gall and a huge part of the family was Carol Barnes. I was a big fan of ITN. They were all supremely talented and, in those days without gimmicks and banter, you couldn't see so easily into their personalities. That was what made their delivery special. They were authoritative, professional, reliable & often at ease w/ a warm smile.

  • i'm very sad to hear this news. Haven't been in the UK since 1989 as a kid, but Carol was one of my favorites. She was terrific on C4 Daily and across the schedule on ITN. Rest in peace.

  • RIP carol. you will be with your daughter now.

  • RIP Carol - a fantastic, cool and professional newsreader. You will be missed.

  • RIP Carol, so sad about the news, condolences to your family and friends, another part of my childhood has gone.

  • I get a warm fuzzy feeling watching old TV from the 80s and 90s, for some reason. But RIP Carol.

  • Poor Carol. RIP. I was hoping like everyone else you would recover. Condolences to your family and friends. You were BRILLIANT!

  • RIP Carol

  • I was sad and shocked to here that you have lost your fight for life Having been brought up up with you on the news over my childhood and I only saw you again last month on the tv doing that unique documentry on 1 of your former presenter's who was then homeless and a recovering alcholic and sleeping rough on the streets of Brighton as ever you showed your commitment and compassion and helped him please rest in peace Carol the news will be a darker place without you now god bless Andy

  • RIP carol such a grt loss

  • RIP Carol Barnes. 1944-2008

  • RIP. Beautiful in manner & action. A real English rose.

  • RIP Carol

  • RIP Carol

  • RIP Carol. You were in every sence of the word, a lady.

  • RIP Carol.

  • Rest In Peace Carol. God Bless you.

  • I loved watching you on the news a very sexy lady indeed

    RIP my darling

  • bring back the changes to itv regions because some regions need to change

  • Which south east city or town are you from?

  • It was true what George Russell said, there will never be another frachise auction of this kind again. Only, franchise renewals are never going to happen again, full stop. The creation of ITV plc has put them to bed. As a result, British viewers are now stuck with an ITV that looks and feels bland, samey, anodyne and gigantically unmanageable, plus it's not just commercial any more, it's disgustingly corporate. Charles Allen, if you're there, well done and thanks a bunch! Mike S.

  • The lady at Thames was right. Carlton never equalled Thames in terms of quality and to mak matters worse, Carlton stated that they would not be producing programmes themselves instead choosing to contract out to any old hack to do that job for them. The results were useless. One more thing, it is great that ITV have got the rights for the ITC Entertainment catalogue back. Why not? It was their's to begin with. Mike S.

  • Mike Morris after he left GMTV. He went to Yorkshire Television and presented the evening Calendar News at 6.00pm.

  • it was Carol Barnes presented the Itn News at 5.40 October 16th 1991 then John Suchet Presented the Early Evening News From 1992 now hes at Five News doing the news bulitens since 2005

  • Who presented the ITN Early Evening News when it changed in 1992.

  • It was a hugely confusing scenario, because the government stated that ITV franchises would go to the highest bidder, then we were informed that TSW and TVS, for example, lost because their bid was too high?! Heads being scratched everywhere? I was certainly scratching mine. Mike S.

  • Thanks for uploading. We are lucky here, UTV have been the only franchise and has done a great job.

  • I like utv even though i live in glasgow, i watch it through sky, compared to the s**t that is stv, utv is a professional outfit!

  • When did the 540 change its name to the Early Evening News

  • Around sometime in early 1992. Don't know which month, though. But it was before they introduced the blue on white look.

  • The CARLTON logo changed to Gill Sans and

Westcountry was bought in 1997 by CARLTON TV

    after Central was bought.

    Meridian kept the franchise logo.

Sunrise TV was renamed the show you know and love

now: GMTV because Sky News was going to

sue them like ABC planned to sue ABPC unless

they changed to ATV. 2 LAWSUITS FOR ITV!

  • Was this the full bulletin, because i think the programme lasted for 20 minutes.

  • No it wasn't. It did last for 20 minutes.

  • Well Carlton certainly screwed up ITV!

  • How right the woman was about Carlton Television. Excellent upload, I find this franchise round and everything about it very interesting.

  • Too damn right was about Carlton they also fucked up Central and HTV. To cut a long story short ITV isn't the same anymore as it was then when it showed U.S programmes as well as homemade

  • Carlton Television is crap compared to Thames!

  • @KevCityboy

Carlton is Crap compared to anything.
