hey what did you cover the plane with? that clear looking stuff. it looks more efficient than the tissue that i've used with my other guillow's models. thanks
Can you tell me how long it took you to build this model?
I just won Guillow's Corsair it on eBay.
It is my first balsa model... You must be thinking I am crazy and you're probably right, but I hope to find a lot of info online, go slowly ask experienced friends for help and hopefully build mine to look half as good as yours :)
@kmlkrk Hi it took about three months, or around thirty hours. It is one of the better Guillows to convert, Go to RCGroupsdotcom and the electric scale forum has a Guillows conversion listing. This one is on the list and has all the detail of how I did it. Did you get the older kit with the F4U-1D cowl. If you don't use the 1D cowl I could use a new one as I had a little crash damage. Good luck it is a fun build! -MPP
@milesperpound I got a one called "F4U-4 CORSAIR GUILLOW'S WING SPAN 30 3/4 BALSA KIT".
I am a member of RC Groups. I also fly Parkzone Corsair and I love it. I really love the looks of Corsair that's why I would love to build this one and make it electric.
I think my biggest challenge will be covering the wings as I have no experience with that at all. I am pretty good with manual work though so hopefully I will be OK.
@kmlkrk Great, Start a thread and you will get lost's of help. Covering is not that hard. just takes patience. Practice on a foam glider with low heat. The kit I got was pre 1980's so it included a second cowl, One for F4U-1D and one for F4U-4. The Parkzone stuff is fun, Building is lot of fun too. Best -MPP
@milesperpound I will start a thread for sure. I will probably start building in the winter though. I will have more spare time because I won't be able to fly my PZ Corsair in winter ;)
I also have to clean up a room where I intend to build my Balsa Corsair. I have to turn it into my work-studio ;)
@10nickles Sorry the fellow that made them no longer does them. Too bad they are nice. I imagine with a little planning you could get the new electric rotating retracts to work. good luck, it is a great flying conversion. -MPP
Great video. I love the project. I am working on a similar project, and I just got to the portion of now converting. I have built models before, and flown RC for years, but I have never converted a model to electric flight like this before. I was hoping you could answer some of my questions. What size motor did you run with this? Also, I would be interested in knowing what brand the retracts are. Lastly, how did you hinge the control surfaces? Thanks for your help
@sainty22 Hi, you can get the whole build thread on RCGroupsdotcom it is in the scale forum and look at the top sticky Guillows conversions- list of conversions, it is under kit 1004 Corsair. There are several threads that are good reference for conversion. I go by the same handle there Milesperpound. Much easier and helpful site for what you are looking for. Good luck this was a fun project.
Unfortunately the retracts are no longer made...sorry -MPP
You know what would be cool for a future video? Get a shot where you "buzz" the camera coming straight at it from the front! That would be awesome :-)
@Aviator111167 HI JUST GO TO LAMINATORWAREHOUSEDOTCOM IT IS NOW CALLED PET 1.5MIL ONLY DRAWBACKIS YOU HAVE TO BUY TWO ROLS OF THE STUFF. OTHERWISE YOU CAN GET SMALL SHEETS FROM MANZANOLASERDOTCOM UNDER CATALOG ACCESSORIES GOOD LUCK
Wow ! ! All of these videos featuring RC planes have almost inspired me to get back into it after 30 + years. Back then, it was an expensive hobby (as compared to my income!) and could get messy with fuel exhasts and such. I designed and flew "pattern" planes and even used Guillows kits to "scale up" a few warbirds! I've got a footlocker full of balsa, a couple of OLD radios and equally old engines. With the electric motor technology available today, I'm ready to get the "bug" again ! !
@jshalffast GO FOR IT ONCE YOU GO ELECTRIC YOU WILL NEVER LOOK BACK, I TOO STARTED ABOUT 25 YEARS AGO AND JUST GOT BACK INTO IT 6 YEARS AGO. NOW EVENT HE SMALL GUILLOWS ARE EASILY CONVERTED. LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES. ALL THE BEST -M
Is that a Spektrum DX6i you are using? I have the same TX for my B-400 3D. I have been thinking about building a plane (since the DX6i has a 10 model memory) Let me know. Thanks and great video!
@mattxr2i I am using the DX 7 on this model but as long as the Tx and Rx bind you will have no problem. I have an old Dx6 I use and it is fine even though it is not DSM2. Thanks for watching and sorry for the late reply, been trying to finish up a few projects. Let us know how it goes when you build. Best -M
I just found about 20 of these Gulliows plans from 67-70's, all in box with plastic covers, don't have any use of them, how much should i sell them for anyone know? all are the flying model kit
@killer84s10 depends on if they are currently in production or obsolete. best bet is to go to eBay and look at similar listings under Guillows. I have seen some of the rarer models go for quite a bit. Let me know what you have. I am always interested. Thanks -M
@ronho2007 FF, control line or simple RC, They are not really interested in updating the RC side of the plans but sure is fun to convert them now with the electric technology. -M
@mailtopravit the retracts were made by Orionpax on RC Groups dot Com he makes them himself. Monokote sure, but it is heavy and can break balsa structures when shrinking. I used PET AKA Doculam, very nice film for covering and painting. Good luck.
I have the kit in my closet....Scared to start because it's my first build since I was a kid....and ,since the F-4U is my favourite warplane...Maybe a more simple kit to warm up on or???/...Any feed back or advice would be GREATLY appreciated....
@ratmq Hey the 1000 series are a good place to start. the best are the SBD and the Hellcat. second would be the P-47 and the Corsair. Best advice I can give is go to RC Groups dot Com and on the scale forum is a list of Guillows conversions. This Corsair is linked there also. This is the best resource for these conversions. Easy to ask questions there also. Let us know how you make out. Cheers -M

@NetRanger101 Ah-men brother. The retracts worked out surprisingly well, sorry for the late reply been trying to finish up a P-39 kit. Flaps would really push the envelope but now after flying this for a while I think it could handle another ounce or two. Might have to build another one....Eeek! Thanks again, - Mark
the paint job looks a little light, nice job man. i just got into planes, started off eith a PZ citabria. i can put that thing anywhere in the sky now
Thanks. I modeled it after my friends fathers plane that was well faded in the hot Pacific sun. This is a great hobby and the PZ stuff is a great way to get started. Hope you enjoy the hobby as much as I do. -M
