@seppomuppit it's easy to pretend to preserve a culture that they already have destroyed, on a land that they have stolen to the Maori. If the Maori could not play that good, do you think there would be any haka before each match? You white colonisators are so pathetic and hypocritical.
@chongtak so you would rather white people in NZ bury the remains instead of trying WAY too hard to preserve? I totally agree but for very different reasons.

@BigLaxFan94...............My Brother i'm from The Twin Islands nation of Trinidad and Tobago. My country carries a culture as rich than many nations. i just enjoy seeing that like us they keep their culture alive. lmao the moriori arnt even in the minds of newzealand they were not a warrior race thats y they fled to bluff on the out skirts of the south iland lamo y r u guys even mentionin those weak people
@SuperLechaim yo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im maori/european and i am very proud of my maori side yet if u saw me u wuldnt no im maori so mate ur comment is kind of disrespectful we dont think we a maori we are maori and very proud
@SuperLechaim The Kon-Tiki Expedition and the Ra Expedition by Thor Heyerdahl explores the idea that they were ancient Egyptians who rowed across to Peru in reed boats. That they colonised Hawai and other islands on the way back laden with kumara, thought to have originated in Peru.
@SuperLechaim The Maoris did not start arriving in New Zealand until about 600-700 years ago. What is maybe far more interesting is the rapid "Maorization" of New Zealand today, with both sides of the equation - Maori and Pakeha - growing into a new single entity exhibiting traits of both. That process is far from complete and maybe it never will be, but there seems to be no doubt New Zealanders are inevitably, and almost deliberately moving towards blending into a new cultural identity.
@Veneil true observation regarding cultural identity, but beware sprouting Anglo-centric observations ie 600 hundred years. Wikipedia is completely flawed on this one.
@maoribattalion "Sprouting" Anglo-centric Wikipedia etc? Now there are a few misconceptions on so many levels. I didn't read Wikipedia, nor am I "Anglo". The precise date of the Maoris' arrival will probably never be established, but it seems fairly clear that the bulk of this migration really did not come until the 14th century or thereabouts. Personally, I don't care. In the end neither Maori nor Pakeha were first. If it is such an issue, why not talk about the real first-comers, the Moriori?
@Veneil interesting. Maori seem to be a collective of waves of migrations, including Waitaha, some Moriori and possible earlier settlers. With that construct in mind, 700 yrs does not fit the picture.
The issue is Anglo-centric ideas are skewed to undermine Maori claim to the land.
Regardless, NZ is a cultural entity that i am proud of, and wish the same for Australia but can't see it happening too quickly.
lol i remeber when me a few mates went to america for a holiday in a bar some guys tried to pick a fight wit us we just did the haka and he almost shat himself. we were just accepting his challenge and issuing one back. the HAKA is awesome and so very powerful GO NZ!!!

The Haka is a traditional dance/war cry of NZ. Can't we all just respect other cultures? I visited NZ once, it was the most glorious country I had ever visited. The people there were so kind and thoughtful too.
I would love to see the haka in roar form! i know it's impossible but i mean a true maori tribe facing another tribe some 300 years ago right before a bloody battle!
War is too high tech now, the old warriors were savage but proved their courage!
What is war now, over kitted up young fighters up against a coward with a bomb around its belly!
the haka is many things......it is not just the one thing you all see everytime you see n.z play rugby.....every tribe has its many hakas , greetings etc....and n.z has many tribes and many different cultures that go about things very differently......its not all tikis and sheep.....and its certainly not like -mculpa- says and about killing and eating - ......dickhead! my ancesters stopped that years ago...haha....lol....haka is many things - read about it !!!!....sing a song..be happy.
i agree with you markydaws777 im the same age and the winger im faster than most people in my year and my coach says im the best winger on are team but for some reason my team passes it to the skinny weak winger who can do precisley shit
i agree with you markydaws777 im the same age and the winger im faster than most people in my year and my coach says im the best winger but for some reason my team passes it to the skinny weak winger who can do precisley shit
I'm 14, and I have a video of the haka between the All Blacks and the Tonga, I use it as a psyche up in the changing rooms before I go out. It works. Because I'm 5ft 8" and 9.5 stone winger, I like to run at the small, skinny wingers and destroy them. Sadly, because I'm a winger, I don't get the ball much. But for some reason, one of my best mates who is 13 and is 6ft 3" and weighs 16 stone, does get the ball ;)
Oh my god, i surely appreciate this unique and beautiful form of expression
I am from Eastern Europe
but really , what westerners understand, as you watch this and other clips also, is that you can sing other songs over this!! Oh my god we are idiots!!
wtf is she talking about the haka not violent :P the original meaning was youre so fucking fucked in a minute u will be death and i will eat u:P the tongeu and the end meant more or less: this is where u will end up (ass food)
i got to witness a haka Febuary 2010 Squamish BC Canada when the new Zealand Olyimpic team stopped on our traditonal lands ........WOW goose bumps...its was awsome
how can they say that Haka is not violent, it is a war dance and the sticking the tongue out sign is like saying "I am going yo eat you" which is what maori warriors would do in ancient times once they defeated u, they would eat u and shit u. At once honoring you because they would eat youy to gain your strength and at once humiliating you , turning you into human feces... so saying haka isn't violent is just stupid. It is a war song, and they should be proud of iT.
This thing called HAKA, to me sounds like a WAR declaration, I don't understand the language, but after hearing a HAKA it makes me want to fight to the death. To me HAKA is like Death Metal in acapella...
This particular Haka 'Ka Mate' is not a war dance but is a Karakia or prayer that's why it is considered ceremonial rather than a war dance. It tells of a chief Te Rauparaha who hid underneath a ladys skirt in a pit when he was running away from some people from Waikato. This is what he chanted when he was being chased it was a prayer more than anything.
ho ri te!!! ha ho ripe!!!. ka mau!!!! hi!!! rin rin a pa quia awana ri pa kia ne oki!!. akia ne oki!! Ka mate! Ka mate! Ka ora! Ka mate! Ka mate! Ka ora! Tenei te tangata puhuru huru! nana nei i tiki mai! whatakawhiti te ra! A upa...ne! A upa...ne! A upa ne kaupane whiti te ra!!!
@AIRWelshDan I would say good try at writing the words to the haka e.g. "Ka mate to Whakawhiti te ra" are correct but before it and after are slightly and drastically incorrect.
And guys, don't forget that you have many types of Haka. The Haka used here is a typical war-Haka, but Haka's are just like songs: anyone can create one and it can have different meanings or goals.
I think the haka is somewhat violent, and it should be< its a challenge to the strength of the opponent. to show them that you have no fear, and plus they are about to play rugby, a totally violent sport (awesome). I plyed american footbal for 7 years and i loved the pre game pump we would get and the way we would challenge the opponents with our ritual.... i would love to be able to challenge an opponent in the way these hakas do!!! Very intimidating
nothing beats an educated observer. the lady at the end obviously got to read what ka mate is and it's origins. Haka IMHO is rallying and it is traditional not only to Maori but NZ and the sport of rugby as it has been performed by the team for generations and is a genuine spectacle of the sport. What opponents must recognize is that to have the haka in front of you is as much about showing you respect too as worthy adversary. I'm not Maori but I am a kiwi.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Are they bloody fucking serious!? I dont see how they think the Haka is not violent, wasnt it first used by a Maorian warrior (or was he a tribal chief, I dont know but he was an islander) who was surrounded by the red coats in the early 1800's, and knowing he was srrounded used the Haka to scare off the brits? oh wait wait mate, he was welcoming the fucking brits, that's what he was doing! If the Haka was ment to be for pansies than I think football should take it over.
@MCulpa... you are wrong.. Ka Mate! Ka Mate! Ka Ora! Ka Ora! Tenei te tangata puhuruhuru Nana nei i tiki mai Whakawhiti te ra A upane ka upane! A upane kaupane whiti te ra! Hi!! English Translation: It is death! It is death! It is life! It is life! This is the hairy person Who caused the sun to shine Keep abreast! Keep abreast The rank! Hold fast! Into the sun that shines!
@MCulpa Im gonna assume that you are ignorant , and it would have been and absolute trial and bother of your time(1min) to assess the real translation and meaning of the Haka..

I guess, for the Maori, Rugby is tribal warfare by other means. As the Brits are fond of saying, "Brilliant!"

Yeah, the French have to spell everything out in the Marseillaise. With the Haka you know exactly what they mean.

jajay112 1 year ago 2
how can they say that Haka is not violent, it is a war dance and the sticking the tongue out sign is like saying "I am going yo eat you" which is what maori warriors would do in ancient times once they defeated u, they would eat u and shit u. At once honoring you because they would eat youy to gain your strength and at once humiliating you , turning you into human feces... so saying haka isn't violent is just stupid. It is a war song, and they should be proud of iT.
TheOuroboros84 1 year ago
This thing called HAKA, to me sounds like a WAR declaration, I don't understand the language, but after hearing a HAKA it makes me want to fight to the death. To me HAKA is like Death Metal in acapella...
arelius1971 1 year ago

@arelius1971 it is a declaration of war. look at MCulpa's response.
Uhm, the Haka is not how you respect someone, or how to communicate peace.
it was essentially how you say "I am going to kill you and eat your corpse" in Maori.

We cant argue with you there mate. But we are the most hardest team to beat!
skankibounca 1 year ago
@jonnyparkes6 true, but being ranked number one for over 100yrs with the best win/loss ratio of any team does entitle the ABs to "best team" status.

@AIRWelshDan I would say good try at writing the words to the haka e.g. "Ka mate to Whakawhiti te ra" are correct but before it and after are slightly and drastically incorrect.
cruelrenz 1 year ago

Very intimidating

one of the haka we use to do with ngati umutahi had a pray in it
pomare181a 2 years ago
nothing beats an educated observer. the lady at the end obviously got to read what ka mate is and it's origins.
