LeBron, Bosh and Wade could have have had a 130 Million dollar contract for 6 years if they stayed with their original teams; They turned down 50m, each of them I don't think they care
T he argument is very valid. I live in western, NY the owner of the Buffalo sabers had to change his address to FL also due to high taxes. Many of the Jets, Giants and Knicks have New Jersey addresses, Due to Way to high taxes. It sucks but it makes sense. What blows is business and millionaires that employ people leaving my city, taking jobs with them, because our politicians on both sides suck at their job.
Is that the sort of society we want to live in? Yeah!
Not to mention LeBrons federal tax is more than these people, their family, and neighbors pay combined. But he's not paying his fair share! lol communists.
Lebron would be paying a LOT more in taxes in New York as opposed to...well, anywhere - including Miami
I'm not even a basketball fan, but as far as I can see...he wants to win a championship, and it doesn't look like it's gonna happen for him in Cleveland
Everyone knows Wade and Lebron have been best friends for 10 years. He wanted to play with him, and get a ring. Lebron did it for that, NOT because of taxes. He was making 26 million a year in Cleveland. He probably took it down to 20 or even less to be in Miami. Carmello is going to NY next year after his contract is up because he wants a new team, and he even said he wants to play with James. LJ was Carmellos best man.
That's the added perk of going to any Florida team. It allowed Bosh, Wade, and Lebron all to take up less cap space so that they could sign other players, while still making roughly the same amount of actual money that they'd have made anywhere else.
Of course Cenk doesn't like it...he probably also gets upset when he hears about a business moving to a lesser taxed state. We're just gonna see more and more of it, though.
no its not a money factor. its the fact that cleveland is a shitty franchise that depends on one player(Lebron), and doesnt surround him with good players. the owner as well doesn't know the meaning of business, and should hold his balls and get over it. and no cleveland wont win a championship before the miami heat. sorry
no one is saying poor lebron, theyre saying that people go where the money is. there is a reason why new york, cleveland, chicago, detroit, etc. have been in an economic slump for years while cities like houston are booming. i dont think anyone should pay income tax, period. people will end up voting with their feet and high tax/redtape cities will slowly become less and less competitive after all their citizens and businesses leave the city. BUSINESSES = PROSPERITY, NOT TAXES.
fuck this stupid nigger and every dumb nigger you treat like royalty just for bouncing a damn ball around!!!white man should feel shame for this bullshit.
@raynard88666 -I hope that you burn in hell somewhere. You have got to be the dumbest individual alive. It is sad that you get to breatg the same air as normal people. The fact that you have all that hate in you for absolutely no reason just shows that you and others like you have brains the size of cashews and will never amount to anything besides dumb white guys who hate black people. Stop being a retard and get with the times..Loser!!
@klevahbeatgod fuck you nigger lover, if this is what the times are supposed to be like now a days , you can keep them. i will hate niggers to the day i die. Hell would be a better place to be as long as i am far from filthy, pregnant, ignorant, subhuman niggers. i do feel far worse for you though. your shit aint working on me you piece of human shit. you are part of the problem. i wont be here to see it at its worse. thank Satan!
NO ONE in Florida pays state income tax not just Lebron. If YOU don't want to have to pay state taxes then move to Florida or Texas or Alaska or any no state income tax state.
If you don't like it, then move out of those states. Interesting fact, Dallas/Fort Worth was the fastest growing area in the US from 2000-2009. I wonder why people and jobs are here? It is probably because we don't tax everyone's ass off.
Guess what area had the highest percentage growth? Palm Coast Metro area FLORIDA.
This man is a dumbass... he's talking about it not being fair that people in florida dont pay state income taxes.... if u dont think its fair move 2 fucking florida!!!! and sales tax??? Lebron has more money 2 spend on shit than poor people so he will pay more sales taxes!!!!! mr young turk is just a typical liberal that just wants 2 create division between rich and poor. Lebron might be a dick 4 leaving Cleveland but who wouldnt leave cleveland 4 fucking MIAMI!!!!!!! and no income tax!!!!
@andycf87 i never noticed the guy from turk trying to devide he just points out that ther ARE (ya provabl fact) and pointing out that if people are complaining about the 1-15% on top haveing to pay to larg taxes thers a probelm you don't get taxes do you??? you know he would have to pay more incom tax then most people ?
@jannikmt ... but u dont hear him talking about how he's gonna pay more Federal income taxes than most people (especially after Jan 1st) all you hear him whining about is how its unfair that LeBron wont have 2 pay state income taxes in Florida. My entire point is that he's leaving out details like that and using class warfare to make people hate LeBron, right out of the socialist playbook,,
guys, lebron still got paid how much he wouldve gotten paid in cleveland, because the cavaliers agreed to a sign and trade, so he still ended up getting paid 120 million dollars.
TheYoungTurks that's why I watch NBA perhaps even though it has its flaws. I am using this training program that's utilized even by NBA players - "50inch vertical [dot] com" - I already jump few ins higher and being more impactful on the court!
LeBron James In Miami Over Taxes? BS! qoaqxmlbmyiloalxuqa lnrmstekanrpvwjcosko #TheYoungTurks
no, it's not totally fine that thats the way that the market is structured. does lebron james really deserve to make tens of millions of dollars each year for playing basketball? don't get me wrong, professional athletics have their place, but i don't understand how one can look at the salaries of professional athletes and think to themselves 'yep, this system is ok.'
What is it with the lefty income tax argument that we should worry about what's fair all the time? Always crying about who is or who isn't paying their "fair share". Why don't we just go to complete excise tax in this country and be done with the income tax?
@seattle8686 you say that california’s problems come from “state spending, market busts in 2004 and then our housing/financial crisis makes it hard for any state in debt to come out of it”. State spending is a problem anywhere because government is horrible at spending money. Market busts are going to happen in any economy and are necessary to rebuild. Failure is part of the trial and error and a free market allows for those who learn to rebuild.. and the housing crisis was a manifestation of
@554floridafire i agree.....but the housing crisis was not a manifestation of government spending as you implied....the housing crisis was due to the private market...where some companies put in these bubble payments that exploded nearly at the same time....coupled with the other part of the private market (bank industry) that took toxic assets and sold them through derivitives trading, backed 300% by its companies assets (our money) and created this huge market collapse...
@554floridafire but i do agree, the market goes up and down in waves and we rebuild. we'll never have a perfect system of positive growth but government CAN do some things right, problem is they spend too much on some things (defense contracts to privatized companies) and pay them off using programs that DO work (social security, medicare)which has had a surplus for a couple of decades, problem is people think these programs don't work because they have deficits but the surplus is spent elsewhere
he wanted to win a ring couldnt do it in Cleveland personally i wanted him to go to New York Amar'e Stoudemire andTracy McGrady are there he would have a better chance, But D waynde is really good Chris bosh is too but either way i think he would have earned a ring... ooo yea Cenk Fuck taxes bitch
Isn't it amazing how states like Florida and New Hampshire, which don't have any income tax, are still able to operate just as successfully, if not more so, than states that do have an income tax? They're able to pave their roads, provide police and fire protection, and provide for basic infrastructure without raking the taxpayers over the coals. How do they make it work? Sounds like a pretty good plan to me.
@Steve197201 To summarize my reply to you: THEY DON'T MAKE IT WORK.
They increase the common taxes, they continue to slash budgets, the unemployment benefit is the lowest in the nation, meanwhile Florida has some of the worst infrastructure and highest crime rates. Lowest average income in the nation, last I checked. Poorest education BEFORE it's budget was slashed.
They try to balance things out by directly socking it to the average Floridian.
@VS257 First of all you don't even know what communism is because if you did you wouldn't be talking shit seeing as your at the bottom of your described food chain. Lebron doesn't work nearly as hard as for example a computer engineer who in this period of time works to his breaking point everyday to avoid being laid off. So why should the little guy pay while the big guy doesn't. You just love riding his dick.
@Zadose18 And I'm assuming YOU're that poor computer engineer are you? Pity! No one cares about your communist propaganda. This is America. The survival of the fittest belongs those who are popular. Stop complaining and go suck Stalin's dick.
@VS257 No i'm still in school, you dropped out though cause your failure of a family couldn't put you through university because you didn't work hard enough to earn a scholarship. You are filth, nothing but an insignificant spec of dust. You're scum and I would happily exterminate you of the face of this planet. You are the nobody so you would benefit from a socialist society however you are too stupid to understand that. Go suck Lebron James' dick you fucking imbecile.
Wow Cenk you really should look at the data when you try to make a statement like Florida's sales tax. I did a search on sales taxes in FL, NY, and in IL. Out of the 3 FL had the lowest and they still pay no state income taxes. While NY and IL have higher sales taxes and have an extremely high state income tax. Let's see you have 2 liberal states that like to have people pay high state income taxes and sales taxes but the people in FL are worse off??? Come on you can't be that naive.
You do have a point, but at the same time Florida is a HUGE tourist state, that is where the revenue is. Snow Birds take off to Florida for the winter, and spend income they have earned in Canada, to live there for a couple of months, So Florida makes a lot of revenue from sales tax in BULK, more so than Floridians what invest through income tax.
@HHH00069 to be fair, on the surface, averaging all sales taxes, Florida and Illinois are lined up with Illinois at 6 and a quarter or a half and Florida at 6%.however, going into which sales tax are which, fast-food (which usually hurts the poor and middle classes because its cheaper than groceries for a week) is at 9%+ which is second to only California which is 8-10%.Florida exempts sales taxes for groceries but they also have one of the highest cost of living when you add in food and housing
@HHH00069 Now I don't think really anyone is hurting in Florida (tax-wise) or anywhere else in the country...I do think sales tax needs to come down quite a bit while regulating tax revenues of the top 5%. The problem is not with high taxes, its about high non-income taxes like encise taxes which hurt he middle and lower classes to make up for the loss of taxes not generated by a top 5% who end up getting away from paying their share. But I agree, Florida's taxes are not much of a problem
@seattle8686 "Now I don't think really anyone is hurting in Florida (tax-wise) "
"Florida's taxes are not much of a problem"
They are constantly raising taxes, rates, and so on. Not only that, but utility rates increase for reasons related to state funding, or the lack thereof. You guys need to shut up about things you don't know about.
@Starry2000 I do know what I am talking about. But thanks
Anyways, people are under the illusion that they have high tax rates even though taxes have remained steady (along inflation) for many years (as a%). What is high is our encise taxes/ sales taxes because it affects the middle and lower classes the most. Florida has a high taxes in this category but no income tax so it is suppose to balance itself out. Problem is, no revenue comes from the top 5% of Floridians when they pay no income tax
@Starry2000 and who are "they" you are speaking of? And what does "so on" mean? This is very general. The fact of the matter is is that Obama has kept our taxes at the same level or reduced them since taking office. He is awful in other areas (e.g. no public option, no drug reimportation, no real financial reform) but the one thing we can say for sure is that taxes haven't been raised...everything else has because we have had a down economy for a few years.
@Mplay1983 - I dont understand.. Just because a state has no state income taxes, you presume that it must be the reason behind their budget issues? That makes no sense. Your solution would be to take more money from my paycheck? Worked out well for California right? im guessing your someone who feels entitled to productive people’s money and portray people who have the audacity to think they kno how to spend money better than the gov. as being “greedy”.
@554floridafire California is not hurting financially because of high income taxes...it was a number of variables ranging from state spending, market busts in 2004 and then our housing/financial crisis makes it hard for any state in debt to come out of it. It wouldnt be fair to say that Californias high income tax is the result of their problems....
@554floridafire besides, it would have been too easy for state politicians just to side with the weak financial reform bill in exchange for 11 billion like Scott Brown did for his states big banks.....California, if they wanted to get out of the deficit is just to side with big banks like Obama and receive a few billion to help get out of the hole
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Professional Athletes still have to pay taxes to states that have a non-resident tax. Everywhere they play with their team constitutes doing your job in another state and if that's in NY when they plays the Knicks they then have to pay tax in NY as a Non-Resident because for that game they worked in NY. So that argument is nonsense.
@Rnieves27 - But LBJ, Wade & Bosh still won't pay anything when they play at home. Not to mention the roughly $2.5 million in tax savings LBJ could receive on his endorsements. The argument stands.
@kmeleanthony It does not matter where they play, At home or away, Tax laws are set up to tax you in the city and state where the Oranization is setup. So for the heat it would be florida. If not every NBA player would have to file state taxes in roughly 21 states, which would be INSANE!!!!!!!!
@ncheels015 Your right about one thing - it IS insane. We're discussing what's commonly referred to as the 'Jock Tax'.
From a relevant article in the LA Times: 'Yet, each April, he pays a small army of accountants to file more than a hundred pages of returns -- and sometimes checks -- to as many as a dozen states and one province in Canada, covering taxes on income he earned on the road.'

@ncheels015 I am very surprised the athletes do not take this to federal court, According to the article you quoted a tax lawyer that the athletes are being taxed with out representation in states they do not live. I believe you and the article now, but I still find it extremely hard to believe the government can screw the athletes like this.
I hear so many people bitch about higher taxes. I rarely hear any sports fan complain about high ticket prices. All these athletes keep on getting bigger paychecks, because fans are willing to pay the high ticket prices to go to a game. I say, time to boycott sporting events, or should I say, business events.
NYC had about as much cap space as the Heat. The notion that a 6-10% difference in pay plays a part in LeBron's choice isn't ridiculous. I'm not sure anyones argued that its the only or most significant reason, but it could be relevant. Its also true that the self imposed salary reductions pretty well mirror his tax savings.
Lower taxes are very relevant to the guys selected to play along w/ LeBron, Wade, and Bosh. Folks for whom a $100,000 difference in tax liability is still substantial.
@Flash3Francisco I wrote: "about as much cap space". The difference between the two teams was just about $7 million. A gap they could have easily closed by moving Eddy Curry's $11 million contract -- along with a few picks of course.
Only solidifies my belief that Lebron is a punk ass bitch. "Wade! Bosh! My friends, I need help winning the title!" Gimme a break what a bitch... Who could ever say this guy even compares to Magic, Bird, Jordan... What a joke. And to do that on a one hour special to destroy the hearts of all the people of Cleveland. Man strokes his own ego more than anyone strokes their own dick.
Wow I can't believe republicans are that ahh... ridiculous that they are using sports to brainwash people. I think even dumb rednecks will know thats bullshit.
Also, I don't think people support consumption taxes because they just want to punish the poor. A consumption tax is a far more efficient form of taxation than an income tax, and there is no reason why a consumption tax has to punish the poor by definition. You could still do lump-sum transfers to the poor (though you are re-introducing the income-tax inefficiencies, but the overall damage would be much lower).
Well, considering nobody in Florida pays income taxes it's not really an issue of fairness. It's only an issue of fairness if the system is highly regressive. Of course, in general, I would try to ignore "fairness" in the traditional sense and just use a non-linear optimal taxation schedule with the utilitarian preference set to whatever societal taste for redistribution we have.
ok le bron went to miami cause dwayne wade chris bosh and lebron would pack the biggest punch and basically they would have a very good shot at winning the NBA title. thats the real reason.
Income tax is a stupid idea in general. Increase the property tax and sales tax and drop the income tax, then the rich have two choices, not own or buy anything, or pay it to employees, and create jobs.
This is getting good check out my channel and comment and subscribe if you all don't mind. I am new and just need a little help to start off. Thanks guys NOT SPAM
leave it up to conservatives to focus on the lebron's money. yeah, that's why lebron james chose florida, he chose tax loopholes over his career, because 50 years from now that's what everyone will be talking about. i'm surprised they have the time, what with all the corporate apologies and subsidy give aways.
it wasn't long ago conservatives were outraged by the money athletes got while saying nothing about the people who could afford them.
I don't care about Lebron, but he did give 2.5 million dollars to the Boys and Girls Club so at least you can't fully hate the man. At least he is giving money to young people that need it to be successful. There was an interview for 2 young people, and one is using some of that money to pay for her education at Howard University.
I doubt his decision was based on how much taxes he'd be paying being he took a huge pay cut by choosing this organization, I think it had more to do with being on a winning team, being in a state with nice weather and other personal reasons. A few years in Ohio will make anyone want to get out and go south. The real problem is sports being so important to so many in the first place, not to mention the ridiculous salaries and endorsements athletes receive. Folks worship the wrong people.
It's difficult to hate the rich more than I do but it really sounds like Cenk just thinks they should be punished for having money. If you're as disgusted by how much athletes get as I am then do what I do and don't watch a bunch of grown men playing an effing game together and they don't make the money. You can't do frequent stories about sports and athletes thereby feeding their celbrity and wealth then complain about their wealth. It's your fault. He's just taking advantage.
I'm not sure what the complaint is. Nobody in Florida pays state taxes it's not like it's just LeBron. They get money because there's toll roads all over hell and(as he mentioned) sales tax etc. Granted it's a smaller percentage of his pay than mine but so is dinner. Should he have to pay 50 bucks for a big mac cause he rich? It's crazy expensive to insure a house in S. Florida so his will be insane and he'll probably pay more for that than taxes anyway.
Your boy Cenk is a joke. Regardless of where Lebron went, the fact that florida has no state income tax is attractive to a lot of people with money.. Then i hear this turd talk about paying “his fair share”... what a clown.
@554floridafire - Pretty sure you're tax structure has a correlation with your budget problems there... reason why your Crist was begging for those federal stimulus dollars. It may be attractive but it does SHIT for the middle class there.
Have ANY of you EVER lived in Cleveland? Even with MORE money than doG it's still tantamount to barely existing. It's a HORRIBLE city which is racist and slow to boot. The weather sucks and it's turning violent. I applaud him for escaping. I did many years ago (like others) and things weren't nearly as bad. Good luck Lebron the hate and disrespect EVERYONE from Cleveland has shown you since you made YOUR decision for whatever reason should be enough to prove you did the make the right choice.
@OLitaBaby It was rumored after Cleveland lost to boston that delonte west was sleeping with lebrons mom. Hence "lebron went south because his mom went west." Get it?
jesus it wasnt for damn taxes. It was because Toronto and damn cleveland are cold climate cities and miami (or as he sees it, south beach) was the most ideal situation climate wise AND flexibility wise. Raptors and cavs could not get 3 close to max contracts so thats why he went to miami... He didn't go to NY because they SUCK. the other logical place would have been chicago but again, i think he would rather play in the shadow of wade vs. the shadow of JORDAN... jordans shadow must be chilly.
That is stupid. Lebron went there because 6 years ago they all decided they wanted to play with each other for any team that would be the easiest for them to get together in. That is that. S
@morenitorocks Even better. Cenk should do a little more homework before he goes claiming how high Florida's state taxes are! New York is one of the most over taxed places America. EVERYONE in New York pays HIGH taxes!
the money has to come out of somewhere, the 400m being dished out to these 3 players will just be paid off by the middle and lower class.. gotta love it
@danielgirotto Compensate for what? Bailouts and Politicians padding the pockets of their Corporate supporters? I love how we have so many tax police out here that are making sure that everyone pays their FAIR SHARE of taxes! I would rather Lebron spend his money on goods from private businesses than give it to a corrupt government like the politicians in New York!
For FUCK'S sake... Conservatives don't GET what taxes are. Sound a bit extreme, like I'm overstating the case? You're wrong. Companies aren't leaving the US because of taxes, they're leaving the US because they can get away with paying people next to nothing in China and Mexico. Because they aren't willing to support their own country by helping the citizens by keeping jobs there if it means that they make less millions.
These people are the people who truly hate America. It's Projection.
I agree taxes played a part. Let me explain. He really wanted to play with Bosh and Wade and is taking about 5 million a year less to play with them. At first glance you say wow he is taking less money but he actually isnt. Because of the tax structure in Florida he will actually be clearing about $1 million a year more then he would have in NY/NJ/Chi or Clev. I do believe if it was a pure 5 million less he might not have taken that chance and left. but b/c taxes in FL are better he did!
@genie0390 hmmmm, yea, doesn't seem like it would be that hard to do. are you one of the mega-wealthy who doesn't want to get fleeced by taxes? or just one of the countless idiots who has been brain-washed into thinking the uber-wealthy shouldn't pay their fair share of taxes?
I'm moving to Reno/Sparks this September because the transit system in Sacramento is getting raped in the rear. Also, I'm tired of the BULLSHIT from the (mainly Elephantile) politicians there.
SO WHAT there's no taxes! people he left 25 million more dollars to go to Miami! He wants to win! thts all i got to say, got a prob with the taxes? go to florida not Lebron he can't do shit about it!
Come on Cenk stop calling it South Beach. You're doing what the rest of the mainstream media does (thought you didn't follow the mainstream media). We have more than one city in Miami. South Beach is not even in the City of Miami. Its is its own separate city with its own mayor etc. Show come love to Opa-Locka, Carol City, Miami Gardens etc. if you gonna mention Miami. Stop leading people to believe Miami only has one city which is South beach. Just stop it, I hate when people do that.
SEE, if you had just let Lebron James (one of the richest athletes in the world) make 15 million bucks a year instead of like 12 million, he would've gone to YOUR town. Meanwhile, you and your neighbor and the rest of your town can have fun making up for that 3 million bucks we'll need. I love conservative logic. Because this is the kind of underhanded shit it always amounts to. One individual needs lower taxes, while the rest of the population can go f*ck themselves.
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD That's a stupid argument. This guy can bring in business, your state will become richer because of this guy, he'll actually create jobs. See what is happening with the state he is leaving, they are joking only half way when they are saying they have Lebron based economy. People will actually lose income now that he'll be gone.
Also just because he is making 15 million is not depriving anybody of 3 million by your calculation.
@romanmir01 Sadly, you're the one who has no understanding of reality. "Bringing in jobs" is the same thing certain idiots said about paying the big banks for the debt and lowering taxes for the rich. Which would explain why there is more unemployment this last year or so compared to the last two decades...?
What jobs will Lebron create? 100 people cleaning his shoes? 200 people getting paid to watch him play? Not even that. You have NO clue what you're talking about.
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD You have no clue what you are talking about. Lebron was an industry in himself for Cleveland. They will be losing tens if not hundreds of millions in revenue now that he's gone and I am not talking about himself, like his staff or 'shoecleaners'. I am talking about entertainment industry, which alone with the military industrial complex and the food industry (by the virtue of both of the later industries being subsidized by the government) are the only US exportable now.
Lebron leaving has HUGE impact on Cleveland's economy
LeBron's impact on ticket revenue as well as on-site concessions, merchandise and parking revenues is in the $56-58 million range, and if we estimate that LBJ's impact on media, sponsorship, and branding revenues for the Cavs is conservatively 50% to 66% of this range, then this puts the total 'LeBron Effect' at roughly $90-100 million.
@romanmir01 For the THIRD TIME: The CLEVELAND ORGANIZATION does not = THE PEOPLE OF CLEVELAND. I don't CARE how much the Cleveland organization made while Lebron was there. That money only goes to the owner, its players, its coach, and that's about it. You're really beating on a dead horse (which isn't even a horse) since you're wrong.
Think about why there isn't a pro sports organization in every city in America. Because it's EXPENSIVE on a city. Same as with Lebron.
Each home game during the regular season nets about $3.7 million, including ticket sales, souvenirs, food and hotel bookings, said Tamera Brown, vice president of marketing for Positively Cleveland, a convention and visitors bureau that promotes city tourism. Multiplied by 41 home games, that's more than $150 million.
@romanmir01 Yeah, except the PEOPLE of Cleveland paid for those tickets. How exactly did the city profit from Lebron, if the city is made up of its people?
That's like saying you got richer by paying taxes to the government. Same complete lack of common sense.

no its not a money factor. its the fact that cleveland is a shitty franchise that depends on one player(Lebron), and doesnt surround him with good players. the owner as well doesn't know the meaning of business, and should hold his balls and get over it. and no cleveland wont win a championship before the miami heat. sorry

no one is saying poor lebron, theyre saying that people go where the money is. there is a reason why new york, cleveland, chicago, detroit, etc. have been in an economic slump for years while cities like houston are booming. i dont think anyone should pay income tax, period. people will end up voting with their feet and high tax/redtape cities will slowly become less and less competitive after all their citizens and businesses leave the city. BUSINESSES = PROSPERITY, NOT TAXES.

Failure is part of the trial and error and a free market allows for those who learn to rebuild.. and the housing crisis was a manifestation of
554floridafire 1 year ago
@554floridafire i agree.....but the housing crisis was not a manifestation of government spending as you implied....the housing crisis was due to the private market...where some companies put in these bubble payments that exploded nearly at the same time....coupled with the other part of the private market (bank industry) that took toxic assets and sold them through derivitives trading, backed 300% by its companies assets (our money) and created this huge market collapse...
seattle8686 1 year ago
@554floridafire but i do agree, the market goes up and down in waves and we rebuild. we'll never have a perfect system of positive growth but government CAN do some things right, problem is they spend too much on some things (defense contracts to privatized companies) and pay them off using programs that DO work (social security, medicare)which has had a surplus for a couple of decades, problem is people think these programs don't work because they have deficits but the surplus is spent elsewhere

Zadose18 1 year ago
Wow Cenk you really should look at the data when you try to make a statement like Florida's sales tax. I did a search on sales taxes in FL, NY, and in IL. Out of the 3 FL had the lowest and they still pay no state income taxes. While NY and IL have higher sales taxes and have an extremely high state income tax. Let's see you have 2 liberal states that like to have people pay high state income taxes and sales taxes but the people in FL are worse off??? Come on you can't be that naive.
HHH00069 1 year ago
@HHH00069
:P
.
Joxman2k 1 year ago
@HHH00069 to be fair, on the surface, averaging all sales taxes, Florida and Illinois are lined up with Illinois at 6 and a quarter or a half and Florida at 6%.however, going into which sales tax are which, fast-food (which usually hurts the poor and middle classes because its cheaper than groceries for a week) is at 9%+ which is second to only California which is 8-10%.Florida exempts sales taxes for groceries but they also have one of the highest cost of living when you add in food and housing
seattle8686 1 year ago
@HHH00069 Now I don't think really anyone is hurting in Florida (tax-wise) or anywhere else in the country...I do think sales tax needs to come down quite a bit while regulating tax revenues of the top 5%. The problem is not with high taxes, its about high non-income taxes like encise taxes which hurt he middle and lower classes to make up for the loss of taxes not generated by a top 5% who end up getting away from paying their share. But I agree, Florida's taxes are not much of a problem
seattle8686 1 year ago
@seattle8686 "Now I don't think really anyone is hurting in Florida (tax-wise) "
"Florida's taxes are not much of a problem"
They are constantly raising taxes, rates, and so on. Not only that, but utility rates increase for reasons related to state funding, or the lack thereof. You guys need to shut up about things you don't know about.
Starry2000 1 year ago
@Starry2000 I do know what I am talking about. But thanks
Anyways, people are under the illusion that they have high tax rates even though taxes have remained steady (along inflation) for many years (as a%). What is high is our encise taxes/ sales taxes because it affects the middle and lower classes the most. Florida has a high taxes in this category but no income tax so it is suppose to balance itself out. Problem is, no revenue comes from the top 5% of Floridians when they pay no income tax
seattle8686 1 year ago
@Starry2000 and who are "they" you are speaking of? And what does "so on" mean? This is very general. The fact of the matter is is that Obama has kept our taxes at the same level or reduced them since taking office. He is awful in other areas (e.g. no public option, no drug reimportation, no real financial reform) but the one thing we can say for sure is that taxes haven't been raised...everything else has because we have had a down economy for a few years.
seattle8686 1 year ago
@Mplay1983 - I dont understand.. Just because a state has no state income taxes, you presume that it must be the reason behind their budget issues? That makes no sense. Your solution would be to take more money from my paycheck? Worked out well for California right? im guessing your someone who feels entitled to productive people’s money and portray people who have the audacity to think they kno how to spend money better than the gov. as being “greedy”.
554floridafire 1 year ago
@554floridafire California is not hurting financially because of high income taxes...it was a number of variables ranging from state spending, market busts in 2004 and then our housing/financial crisis makes it hard for any state in debt to come out of it. It wouldnt be fair to say that Californias high income tax is the result of their problems....
seattle8686 1 year ago
@554floridafire besides, it would have been too easy for state politicians just to side with the weak financial reform bill in exchange for 11 billion like Scott Brown did for his states big banks.....California, if they wanted to get out of the deficit is just to side with big banks like Obama and receive a few billion to help get out of the hole
seattle8686 1 year ago

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Professional Athletes still have to pay taxes to states that have a non-resident tax. Everywhere they play with their team constitutes doing your job in another state and if that's in NY when they plays the Knicks they then have to pay tax in NY as a Non-Resident because for that game they worked in NY. So that argument is nonsense.
Rnieves27 1 year ago
@Rnieves27 - But LBJ, Wade & Bosh still won't pay anything when they play at home. Not to mention the roughly $2.5 million in tax savings LBJ could receive on his endorsements. The argument stands.
kmeleanthony 1 year ago 4
@kmeleanthony It does not matter where they play, At home or away, Tax laws are set up to tax you in the city and state where the Oranization is setup. So for the heat it would be florida. If not every NBA player would have to file state taxes in roughly 21 states, which would be INSANE!!!!!!!!

ASRIBEIRIO 1 year ago
Well, considering nobody in Florida pays income taxes it's not really an issue of fairness. It's only an issue of fairness if the system is highly regressive. Of course, in general, I would try to ignore "fairness" in the traditional sense and just use a non-linear optimal taxation schedule with the utilitarian preference set to whatever societal taste for redistribution we have.

TheUSMetalhead 1 year ago

@danielgirotto The team pays the salaries not tax payers! Did you really think that the Florida tax payers are paying these guys salaries?
jeremy8080 1 year ago
@jeremy8080 Obviously but these players aren't paying any taxes at all.. .therefore the lower class people have to compensate for paying those taxes
danielgirotto 1 year ago
@danielgirotto Compensate for what? Bailouts and Politicians padding the pockets of their Corporate supporters? I love how we have so many tax police out here that are making sure that everyone pays their FAIR SHARE of taxes! I would rather Lebron spend his money on goods from private businesses than give it to a corrupt government like the politicians in New York!
jeremy8080 1 year ago

I would sure love to hear a progressive dork like Cenk provide a clear definition of what is "fair", in fair tax
genie0390 1 year ago
@genie0390 hmmmm, yea, doesn't seem like it would be that hard to do. are you one of the mega-wealthy who doesn't want to get fleeced by taxes? or just one of the countless idiots who has been brain-washed into thinking the uber-wealthy shouldn't pay their fair share of taxes?
isaachaze1 1 year ago
@isaachaze1
never mind the typical liberal smear mongering the people who are productive in our society
why punish them??
so, tell me how you define "fair"
genie0390 1 year ago
So what?
I'm moving to Reno/Sparks this September because the transit system in Sacramento is getting raped in the rear. Also, I'm tired of the BULLSHIT from the (mainly Elephantile) politicians there.

PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD 1 year ago
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD That's a stupid argument. This guy can bring in business, your state will become richer because of this guy, he'll actually create jobs. See what is happening with the state he is leaving, they are joking only half way when they are saying they have Lebron based economy. People will actually lose income now that he'll be gone.
Also just because he is making 15 million is not depriving anybody of 3 million by your calculation.
Your argument has no basis in reality.
romanmir01 1 year ago
@romanmir01 Sadly, you're the one who has no understanding of reality. "Bringing in jobs" is the same thing certain idiots said about paying the big banks for the debt and lowering taxes for the rich. Which would explain why there is more unemployment this last year or so compared to the last two decades...?
What jobs will Lebron create? 100 people cleaning his shoes? 200 people getting paid to watch him play? Not even that. You have NO clue what you're talking about.
PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD 1 year ago
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD You have no clue what you are talking about. Lebron was an industry in himself for Cleveland. They will be losing tens if not hundreds of millions in revenue now that he's gone and I am not talking about himself, like his staff or 'shoecleaners'. I am talking about entertainment industry, which alone with the military industrial complex and the food industry (by the virtue of both of the later industries being subsidized by the government) are the only US exportable now.

Lebron leaving has HUGE impact on Cleveland's economy
LeBron's impact on ticket revenue as well as on-site concessions, merchandise and parking revenues is in the $56-58 million range, and if we estimate that LBJ's impact on media, sponsorship, and branding revenues for the Cavs is conservatively 50% to 66% of this range, then this puts the total 'LeBron Effect' at roughly $90-100 million.
romanmir01 1 year ago
@romanmir01 For the THIRD TIME: The CLEVELAND ORGANIZATION does not = THE PEOPLE OF CLEVELAND. I don't CARE how much the Cleveland organization made while Lebron was there. That money only goes to the owner, its players, its coach, and that's about it. You're really beating on a dead horse (which isn't even a horse) since you're wrong.
Think about why there isn't a pro sports organization in every city in America. Because it's EXPENSIVE on a city. Same as with Lebron.
PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD 1 year ago
@PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD

Each home game during the regular season nets about $3.7 million, including ticket sales, souvenirs, food and hotel bookings, said Tamera Brown, vice president of marketing for Positively Cleveland, a convention and visitors bureau that promotes city tourism. Multiplied by 41 home games, that's more than $150 million.
romanmir01 1 year ago
@romanmir01 Yeah, except the PEOPLE of Cleveland paid for those tickets. How exactly did the city profit from Lebron, if the city is made up of its people?
That's like saying you got richer by paying taxes to the government. Same complete lack of common sense.
