The thing I love about Bruce is that he doesn't class himself as bigger than the band and all the guys in the band get their moments every gig to showcase just how damn good they are. Bruce is THE BOSS, but the E Street Band are the Directors and VP's that made him and keep him there!
NILS u are one badass motherfucker!! From now and till forever u shall be the boss, this piece of art solo just blew me totally away!! I wanna make a request for a 4 min long solo like this! I LOVE U NILS!!!
The saddest thing for us aspiring guitarists? When Nils shreds it up at the end of the song, the crowd (and us, the TV/DVD audience) are amazed. For Nils, Bruce, and the rest of the E Street Band? It's just another day at the office. And, yet, Nils is always so humble and graciois. even posting guitar lessons - for a very reasonable price given his fame and talent - for the rest of us po' folks. Classy, blue-collar musicians to the bone! :)
Thats why Springsteen calls him the Godfather of the Guitar. Quite possibly the best guitar solo ever. WOW Nils Lofgren WOW. The rest of the song is great too.
Literally watched this pretty much everyday for the past 3 weeks. I was there that night, first time of seeing The Boss, it certainly won't be my last time of seeing him either. Glad I got to see the Big Man as well. RIP Clarence, thanks for the music.
hello Youngstowners, here in Europe Tata Steel or Mittal (India) have bought up all the steel works, and Mittal (Arcelor) just ended the 200 years or so Furnace industries (tradition) at Liege, Belgium. (Cockerell was the originator). Look forward!!
I am from Youngstown. My Grandfather owned a steel company there and I saw it go.....this makes me weep...the loss of America to outsourcing......and now Y-town is vulnerable to the fracking industry. The French opening up a mill there now..Enough already!!
My folks met and married there, my brother was born there. My dad worked at Republic Steel till it closed down. I've lived there twice since I've been in my 20s, man - this song always gets me.
@KleWdSide - Nils, hands down. Check out a live version of the tune No Mercy and his "lesson" on how to play his tune Keith Don't Go (it's floating around the interwebs somewhere...)
guys are you serious? has anyone of you heard the 2001 New york city , madison square garden concert ??? THAT was the best Youngstown performance in the history of the E street band, and probably the best concert Bruce Springsteen had. His voice here is nothing like in NYC 10 years ago... ofc he was younger :c
They played this in Helsinki too, and With even more intensive. The gig lasted over 3 hours. Temperature was over 28 C, but I guess the temperature in the stadion was even higher. It's one of the best guitar solos in rock, but it's not just Nils, it's the whole band. The way they play together; it's unbelevable. The best gig I have ever experienced. So, Thanks Bruce and The E street band. I'll never forget that night.
What makes these guys great is that the next nights concert would be a different show. Some different songs and some different versions of others. I don't believe there was ever a band that would or could do that and they all appear to be having fun, after all these years and all those tours. We are all lucky to be living in these times and witness the real Jersey boys. His mom was right, he had a future in writing, she just had the wrong genre, moms are smart.
I JUST DIED! Nils has been my favourite guitarist since I was... six! And he still is. And Nils has also made me hate my own dad, becouse he won't give me his Nils and Grin albums, the earlie ones... AND I saw Lofgren Live... Nils is like Gimli in lotr, he's just absolutely Awesome! And No1 Can take that from him! Well, He might be a little bit smaller and thinner than gimli, but except for that! Thanks for posting this video! This made my day!!
@AlbinOstervall heh...nice post and you know a GREAT guitarist when you see one...I was like your dad...saw him in a bar in Wilke's Barre Pa with his bro...awesome night...partied with the band and the Hooter's were playing that night at Kings College...they came over to hang out with Nils...what an awesome night!
. My Dad ,two brothers and I all have advanced degrees but all of us worked in the steel mills at one time or another. . Me and two my brothers worked in the Open Hearth;my brother-in-law in the pipe plant;it was who we were ethnic peope like italians, greeks, lebanese, crotiations, slovakes, irish, hunkies, spanish, and african americans. . No matter how much we achive in life if you get to close to any of us you will still smell the graphite on us. Drinking fighting and football was the norm.
At 1:31 you just understand why the whole freacking world refers to him simply as The Boss. He is the toughest, coolest, ass kicking human being alive.
How could you not like this song. it gives me the chills it's just haunting you can just picture the jeanette (my sweet jenny) blast furnace sitting in ruins.
@shortie46 - the recording of Youngstown from the Live In New York City features an equally firey Nils solo. Check out the version of Atlantic City, too!
@LittlestevenMiami - my fave point during this tune is, during Nils' s solo (at 4:38), Max is doing a fill and Bruce yells "yeeah!" and Max shakes his head and mouths "yeah baby!"
@shortie46 you should check out Nils "Keith don't Go" instruction video...Nils says it's "intermediate"...yeah...right...I've played for 35 years and if that is intermediate....I should just use my guitars as firewood!
Goosebumps are still tingling
