Two things, 1: That is just awesome! 2: i can tell for some of your responses to the comments on your videos that you are an intelligent man and being form Alabama, i love finding smart people with a southern accent.
That is sick! Man, trying to become a blade smith is hard cause there are so many cool new things out there that you wanna try. But being broke, I'll stick with learning to forge weld san mai billets of wrought Iron and 1084 or somethin. Do you have to use a stainless crucible or are there other things that can be used that are easily salvaged or made? Looks like a gold nugget, but once that's on one of the blades YOU make, should be worth more, Keep up the great work bro!! :) peace
Could you use stainless steel cable to do this?just wondering,I mailed you a package today, hope you enjoy it! Can't wait to see what you think! Merry christmas, later,Kirby
@shortfusedleathernk I don't see why ya couldn't use stainless. It'd be a lot easier to prep for sure. I've made stainless and brass layered mokume a few times. Copper fuse welds good to stainless too. I've been thinking about doing a copper and brass mokume video. What ya think? Can't wait to get the package brother! Merry christmas to you too. Take care.
@attackoftherandom I don't know of a good way brother. You sure wouldn't wanna use that cable for this experiment. I always use new cable. I just get cut-offs for free from a local rigging company. Check into that.
please forgive my ignorance, but I really struggle to know where to balance my blades and also HOW to balance them on that point, could you please shed some light on the topic??? I have once got very close to balancing a knife i made at the hilt, but it was still off it was a simple knife that was s shaped that was inspired by the islamic sabres ..... still couldnt balance it.
@freedomzimbabwe Its not easy to answer that question without seeing and holding the knife. It's really up to the judgement of the smith to determine where to balance a blade, but it's done mainly with distal taper, bolsters or guards, and pommels... Most large knives perform best in my opinion with the balance point a couple of inches forward of the index finger position on the grip. The longer a blade gets the more ya wanna move the balance towards the grip. This help any?
@ArtistBlade1972 okay thanks heaps! im thinking of making a small khopesh style knife, if i have any luck i will show you what end up with, really appreciate the reply, By the way where did you balance the khopesh sword? also 2" up from the index finger?
A combat oriented knife or even a dagger needs to have the weight ratio between blade and handle kind of balanced (point of balance being the guard), this way, the control over the blade's position is perfect and balance will be conserved in any kind of movements/rotations. Weight forward is good for larger utility blades, for chopping.
Swords are another story and I don't know what's good or not for them.
@chibraxial I pretty much agree with that. I hardly ever build a blade with weight forward design however. Even a chopper. If the blade has sufficient mass and correct edge geometry it'll chop like crazy and not tire your arm out like a weight forward design will.
That is awesome! I am going to try this with copper for a few gyuto's and for a full J knife set i am doing...I have about 40 feet of cable to play with :)
@stonybrokebushcraf Thanks Stony. This material and other similar stuff would be nice to incorporate into your already very nice leather work. Beads, buckles, snaps, etc
@stonybrokebushcraf Thanks Stony. This material and other similar stuff would be nice to incorporate into your already very nice leather work. Beads, buckles, snaps, etc
@PintoBlades Yeah I gotta make it an see how it turns out. It's just an idea I have for now. I think I'm gonna end up doing wrought iron fittings on my sword though. I came into a piece of wrought from a fence that was installed in 1787. Just seems like that would fit better than a modern material. Send me some pics of your other 2 blades man.
@ArtistBlade1972 - Can do...nothing has gone to heat treat yet but the grinds are done on two of them..hopefully third will be done this weekend. I want to send about 5 out for HT together and then finish them up. Might do a vid...we'll see. Wrought iron fittings on the sword should be awsome....thats some old stuff..wow 1787....did you find Old Atlanta or something?
@PintoBlades It came from an old fort close to savannah. A few sections of fence they removed they donated to our guild. It's lamellar wrought and has a nice fibrous structure. I was gonna deeply etch it and blue it. Then I thought about making mokume with it and copper. Kinda scared to do much to it for fear of losing my small piece. I'll probably just preserve the integrity and use it as is. I did make a small blade from it laminated to a 1080 core. Looked pretty cool.
That was really excellent! Love watching your vids. I am just starting blacksmithing, built my first coal forge recently. Learning alot watching your vids. Am subing. Keep up the good work.
@bigyoda12 Kinda the wrong way to look at it but yeah, the color is caused from an oxide layer forming on the heated steel... Color is dependent on temperature.
sir that is such a awesome simple idea well done, side not about the zinc oxide, I cast brass but I use flux so there is very little if any smoke so im guessing that ur not using a flux??? and that true is it because you don't want the flux inside the cable?? am I guessing right?
@meanman1992 No, the reason there's more than the average amount of smoke is because the brass is at a very high temperature. A lot higher than you'd have it to pour. It'll quickly oxidize at this temp and burn. Notice how when I pull the cable up and the brass is exposed to oxygen it catches flame? It doesn't seem to wick as good at a lower temperature.
that cool to me.
