It seems lot of people want to know why HK was given to China well Historically, it belongs to China but it was stolen by us Brits so they claimed. Deng told Mrs Thatcher when she visits China that they wanted it all back so we had no choice but to sign 1984 treaty.
China said taking back was for national reasons cos it was Chinese Sovereignty terrority illegally taken by Britain after declaration of war between the two nation. Deng is said to have told Mrs Thatcher HK is not yours.
Problem is you guys returned to the fake China, PRC.
Most Hkers supported Dr. Sun Yat Sen's ROC not Mao Zedong's PRC. Thatcher gave HK back for economic reason, fearing a PRC boycott, that is all. We were taken away for economic reason and given back for economic reason, never have a choice. There is no moral in the two exchanges, its just a big political game in which the city is the spoil.
@samwongyt Not ceded but give it back cos Chinese claimed we stolen it from them. (Your writing is translated from Chinese into English for my reading.)
Its so sad, Britain should have never gave up its empire, i mean look at Hong Kong now, its standards are very high and a prosper place to be in! Great Britain just got bullied by China into signing an agreement, so that China can receive a propaganda and moral victory and to prevent a war between China and Great Britain
@russianmuzon If you know nothing about chn history, better to keep your stinky mouth shut. HK was ceded to the British because of the Opium war which the british so carefully orchestrated. Hk was a british colony because the Qing govt then was too corrupted and weak to even defend her lands. The british have killed more people through expansion of their empire. The chn govt is no angel, but so is the british. SG where I am, eventually kicked the Brit out because they were cowards during WW2.
@minghan05 china is a large communist shithole as HK will become eventually :( I do not understand how you can post comments here, because YouTube has been banned in your communist dump like all free media, so better go back to your sweatshop and stfu
Strangely enough, this epoch is nostalgic for me too. When I was very young, I used to draw pictures of Hong Kong at this time.
I made the effort to know the skyline and then drew it from memory. I then compared my artwork to actual photographs and I felt very ebullient when they matched.

@EmperorChiCheung Afraid so it is, cos it was historically part of China before us Brits stole it so the Chinese claimed. China said it was Chinese sovereignty terrority broken off by the undeclared war between Britain and China over illegal drugs called the opium.
The truth is PRC is an illegal regime built upon massiven slave labor, the rightful authority of China is ROC, which have cowered into an island and going to be extinct very soon because of international pressure.
Under Chinese history, the previous native regime is always the legal one until it extinct. PRC's ideology is foreign and its culture (destruction of Chinese culture+writing) are foreign, it do not have the mandate of heaven and her supporters are simply collaborators.
well all miss the British Hong Kong! Miss the union jack, miss the stamps, the red post boxes. We are quite lucky of the way things turned out, with becoming Hong Kong SAR. it could of been worse. I thing i will never get over, is the fact the Hong Kong Island, was leased to england for ever. they gave it back along with Lantau and the new territories. Maybe, one day, if the whole of china collapses, we can go and claim back hong kong :)
You just called a country, China, who is able to feed 1.3 billion people, and at the same time by maintaining an economy growth of around 10% per year, and who done stuffs in less than 20 years that any other countries would take 100 years to accomplish....a joke?
The people is the bases of a nation, the economy is an instrument for the people to better their lives, without the people there is no economy. Without political liberties all other liberties is but a façade of freedom afforded to the people by the pleasure of the government and can be taken away by the whim of the government.
economy is not monitered by the people, economy is the fruit of governmental regulation, free markets and the hardwork of people who want to stop their miserable life.
You got political liberties in the USA, but how come USA is still in recession while China still maintain a 7% growth per year?
Because the measure of greatness is not purely just a monetary one, it is all aspect of the peoples lives. It is the extent of the peoples ability to steer the direction of the nation and thus their own futures, it is the assurance that one man or one group wont dictate their lives. That is why every year half a million Chinese immigrate to the US.
@wearejusthumanbeing The US is a matured economy and China is not. When China becomes a matured economy, it will just be the same. To compare the growth rate of a matured economy with a developing country is like comparing apples with oranges. If you don't even know that, you shouldn't even be citing these figures here as its utterly pointless what you are doing.
@wearejusthumanbeing So you are comparing the growing economy of the US a hundred years ago with the growing economy of China in the globalized world now. That's not even right methodology. And if you are so obsessed with these stats, what about China's global corruption index ranking? Human rights index? Pollution index and standard of living index? China is something, but not everything. The country is getting there, but it still has not made it. Don't be so arrogant.
@wearejusthumanbeing Which of what I said did you not understand? I said the US does not have a 9% GDP because no matured economy does, neither did in the past before the globalized economy. Well apparently China is not capable of dealing with corruption until after the fact hence you have these rampant milk powder cases. Everything is about human rights, this is what China isn't getting it, what's the point of even living? Efficiency? How efficient is China dealing with the poverty gap now?
@alvindurochermtl China soon to replace Japan as the second biggest economy. woot! woot! you keep your human rights I keep roll in my BMW, thank you have a good day.
@wearejusthumanbeing Yeah, some countries measure success based on how much the rich makes...the rest base that on the common good. This is the fundamental difference between domestic stability and instability, the uncivilized and the civilized. Thank you very much.
true, china is more stable because is not affected by the recession, and china is also more civilized because it does not invade other countries like USA
@wearejusthumanbeing You're speaking like a true mainland Chinese. Toxic baby formula? Who cares? As long as it makes money, morality is irrelevant. When in doubt, say "we're just human" Corruption? Sure why not? The wheels need to be greased somehow or where does progress come from?
It's good you're only talking shit on YouTube and not actually running any country.
@wearejusthumanbeing You've just answered your own question. A True mainland Chinese on YouTube is one who thinks all HK people are unpatriotic and that HK owes the mainland everything regardless of the specific socio-economic context involved.
@wearejusthumanbeing I'd take that as a compliment, thank you. Our businesses don't make fake baby milk powder here just to make a quick buck so I am quite contend to be a typical Hong Konger.
@wearejusthumanbeing HK did suffer from the economic crisis, so your assertion that the Chinese government had saved HK is unqualified. HK is an international finance hub with intricate connection to the world, it is ignorant to think that HK could be saved by the grace of one Chinese government.
I could say just about the same about China. If HK people didn't break international embargo to smuggle supplies to Chinese people during the Korean War, China would have been nothing now.
Mainland China is a broad term, where it is as big as Europe, not everyone in Mainland China has the same life style or even exact same Chinese culture.
"They actually did a very good job defending the Hong Kong dollar, so they deserve credit. And my attack, if you call it that, was without success."- Soros
@wearejusthumanbeing Didn't Soros fuck everything up in the first place? As you said, defending it, not rescued it. To say HK "survived" the last economic crisis all because of China is as ignorant as saying Obama had to visit China because America's economy all relies on nothing but the Chinese.

Why haven't we all moved to the UK by 1997?
The whole issue should have been moot if HK to the UK were like Hawaii to the US.

Haiti is democratic, but poor. Look what happends after disasters.
China might be not democratic but the government can deal with everything and help its people in the process of disasters.
In this case, it's not about human rights, it's about the efficiency of government when dealing with crisis. And CCP rules at that.
