@EmperorofCartoons No, I find many of their opinions to be void of rationality and insight when they express them. Although, I am aware of the phenomena of smart people seeming like crazy people to dumb people. I'm very personally aware lol.
I am with the resident, the engineer is a fool that works for an over bloated government agency that wants to legislate urban planning, very sad and very real. Are are working for them, are you one of them?
I clicked on this video thinking it was an engineer hating his job because people cant understand simple things such as flattening a street. Turns out that i just wasted 8 minutes of my life. holy shit hahah
@crusader84941 If you watched the whole video, and couldn't figure out the meaning of the discussion, you don't have any brains to begin with, thus - your life was a waste before you got here.
OK, how old is this woman? She says she has lived at that house for 30 years and has kids “old enough” to be playing outside in her yard unsupervised and she still has a child she needs to pull around in a stroller. She also complains about making investments that will pay off for 10 to 15 years. To that I say, why have children? Most of them won’t “pay off” for at least 20 years if at all. She also thinks she is so self important that if she doesn’t go across the street to the businesses
@canon914 Actually, she is complaining about investments that won't give any (as in $0) returns over the course of 10 to 15 year, then after that time they start paying taxes (but by that time the roads in the new section of town will probably be needing repairs so overall they won't contribute anything but will actually cost the town money). The business will close because nobody would walk across the 4-lane high traffic street, once you're driving you'll probably go to a larger store.
Seems like "talk with an engineer" should be replaced with "talk with a city planner or administrator". Most of the talk is about tax subsidy areas assessment etc.
Yes, determining road safety is an engineering responsibility. It should be noted that the Netherlands are abandoning the "forgiving highway" (north american approach) for the "self explaining road" (i.e. reducing clear zone)
so engineering safety doesn't mean turning all into highways.
@NaomiWillett We should all care if the cars drive fast. Speed is the primary factor in determining if a pedestrian will die in a crash. At 20 MPH most pedestrians will survive. At 40 MPH most pedestrians will die. But the 40 MPH road will meet the standards.
@joester013 you mean the man is unnecessarily complicating things because he's a corporate drone and the woman just wants to leave things the way they are because they work?
In other words the Mayor wants a kick back from the Township Engineers he hired for the last year and give the illusion he is spending the tax payer money effectively . The sale of firewood will go to someone and not even be in the specs. Plus the increase in storm water will be ignored as the local streams get more erosion and pollution. We are widening the New Jersey Turnpike to the tune of 2.5 billion dollars. Can you imagine the kickbacks going on there. This video is accurate.
I don't think the bad reviews this video gets are deserved. I agree that the video took a bit long to get to the point, but the problem discussed here is one that has been recognized by many urban planners - that neighborhoods and property values suffer as streets are converted to highways, and the benefits are at times minimal or nonexistent, so 50 years down the road they will be spending government money again to take the same highway back out again (ex: the I-93)
What a biased load of crap. The homeowner is not only portrayed as ignorant and naive, but short-sighted and narrow-minded. It was completely surprising when they ended up trying to spin it so that SHE looked like the protagonist. How ridiculous.
I'm just asking because maybe we can use this voice style to translate shows in foreign country's like China by hooking into the closed captioning system that is already in place and then converting those words written in Chinese into english (or some other language) words that it would then say out of a speaker.
Or maybe just translating the words as they are being said.
The flip side of this? The engineers who push for such idiocies as lowering the radius of traffic circles "because it will make things more dangerous, so the drivers have to slow down"..
This doesn't make sense...a house can't be less than a hundred feet from the road. The clear zone must be at least one quarter of the average distance between the houses and the road.
They "improved" my town by ripping up the asphalt of all the major intersections and laying decorative tiles--like cobblestone. This took years. It created huge traffic problems and people went bankrupt from having their businesses cut off from customers. And all we've got to show from it now are BUMPY intersections. Every time I drive over the bumps I think of the horrible price we paid on some idiot's whim.
Hey how did you move their heads like that. I just made one and they have no expression or aything but it is very good other then that. I have other videos if you guys can check em out too.
This is a very interesting video as a points to such a prevalent problem with continued car oriented development in this country at the expanse of everything else. "Just build more roads, screw transit, that's a waste of money, people don't need options." Its funny how they are "building for future increased traffic and demand" but when it comes to transit, they turn that logic around and say its not needed therefore assuming cars are the only way we should ever get around forever.
@brewmaster - well not knowing the details of your city, I don't want to overstep in my response. All i can do is repeat the idea that if towns were planned so that people actually could walk to the places they want to go, and roads were not overdesigned, then the USA would have a more cost-effecitve economy, with better mobility for everyone, not just drivers. It sounds like your city really overbuilt some roads and now is trying to fix that, compounding overspending with more spending...
In what kind of crazy, mixed-up world does anybody (mother or not) in their right mind ever walk to the local grocery store or restaurant? I guess worlds made up of well-educated fuzzy bunnies. She probably only has to buy carrots and go out for carrot soup of en evening while the bunny-sitter comes over...she also appears to rabbit-on quite a bit.
@jabrett I do. I walked to get Indian for lunch on Saturday, and I usually walk over to the grocery store for something or other at least once a week.
@nick00goku Sorry, but cars moving faster in our cities is a problem. What are you doing to change the tragedy of around 40,000 people per year killed in the USA each year? That's something that touches us all. Engineering can help by calming traffic in cities.
@HowardFair , isn't that exactly the same number used for smoking-deaths? Not to minimize this or anything; but with nearly 20,000 cities in the USA -- the 2 a year (although traggic) does not appear to be above the curve.
@HowardFair , isn't that exactly the same number used for smoking-deaths? Not to minimize this or anything; but with nearly 20,000 cities in the USA -- the 2 a year (although traggic) does not appear to be above the curve -- and I would suspect there would be more if everybody went to the grocery store on foot....
I have to tell you, that despite a lot of effort spent to demonize the engineer here, the white safety mom comes across as ignorant, self-centered, and concerned with very little beyond the issuance of her own uterus. Just like real life.
@axlotl1031 I don't agree--yes, she is talking about her own neighborhood and family, but it's better for all of us if fewer people are killed by cars. The cheapest and best way to do this is to reduce speeds in cities and towns. This video ties together a number of complex issues about planning--to do so without demonizing someone who is trying to simplify the issue would be hard.
OMG this really hits home. We are being hit with a road widening project, as we speak, oh so sad, so hair pulling crazy this mind set is. These so called professionals get in their own way with logic is spot on absolutely so asinine, so mind blowing, no wonder we normal folks have to wonder why there is so much Chaos, They cause their own trouble Shezzz!! Yet we folks have to just take it in stride, Yea right, who's in charge? who pays their salary? Yea I thought so. I'd love to...
@RVFR2 Here in Louisville some planners are trying to make a road narrower and reduce traffic speed so the street will become more neighborhood-like and allow people to walk and bike more safely to local businesses. So not all traffic engineers are like this one. Thing is that I went to a community meeting and discovered that there's a huge faction of people who wanted the road to stay the same way so they can drive out of the 'hood as fast as they're used to!
What the fuck is with these "Xtranormal" vids. It seems like I'm the only one who feels like the horrifying voices and animation completely overshadow anything being said. It's like if I went to a play where the actors were corpses hanging from strings, and nobody in the audience seemed to notice.
This is exactly why it costs on average $500,000 to pave 1 mile of roadway. Also why government has become more gluttonous & wasteful than ever!!! Engineers have taken the place of common people that know how to get shit done!!!
We moved into a rural area of a small town six years ago. Us, and everyone around us is on five acres. As we speak, they are widening the bridge and street we live on. They have already removed over twenty mature trees. The county purchased a 50 foot easement on our property frontage. And yes, when it's done we will be able to watch the traffic, that is already traveling too fast, to travel even faster after the project is finished. We're selling (hopefully).
Not an engineer, but I challenge anyone hating on them to get off their butts and try to do half the things engineers have to do while not enjoying the benefits they have brought to their lives. Your very existence has brought about the standards they have to adhere to. They have to make ALL of us happy.

This is all urban planning and department of transportation.
My father, uncle, wife, son, cousins, and friends are engineers.
Most engineers I know think the WA department of transportation should be dis banned and rebuilt from scratch.
Stop go traffic can be calculated by the interest on the money per square foot of freeway compared to the average gas tax per vehicle per day.
We need cheaper freeways.

@jabrett I do. I walked to get Indian for lunch on Saturday, and I usually walk over to the grocery store for something or other at least once a week.

I actually sided with the engineer in this video. The woman is an idiot.

@nick00goku Sorry, but cars moving faster in our cities is a problem. What are you doing to change the tragedy of around 40,000 people per year killed in the USA each year? That's something that touches us all. Engineering can help by calming traffic in cities.
HowardFair 1 year ago
@HowardFair , isn't that exactly the same number used for smoking-deaths? Not to minimize this or anything; but with nearly 20,000 cities in the USA -- the 2 a year (although traggic) does not appear to be above the curve.

I have to tell you, that despite a lot of effort spent to demonize the engineer here, the white safety mom comes across as ignorant, self-centered, and concerned with very little beyond the issuance of her own uterus. Just like real life.
axlotl1031 1 year ago
@axlotl1031 I don't agree--yes, she is talking about her own neighborhood and family, but it's better for all of us if fewer people are killed by cars. The cheapest and best way to do this is to reduce speeds in cities and towns. This video ties together a number of complex issues about planning--to do so without demonizing someone who is trying to simplify the issue would be hard.

This conversation is too realistic and therefore upsetting. Most people I talk to think this way. This world sucks.

RVFR2 1 year ago

@ElCheebo
Because Geico did it so its apparently it got some publicity yet it still sucks and has no real purpose
the fact stuff like this gets views is probably because people tell other ppl to look at the fail it is

That's government by the politician and special interest. Both democrats and republicans.
We need government by and for the people.
