I agree with Bill. I myself left our outpost many times on non-combat related missions to buy good food and drink. But our rules were: always bring a squad-size element, and ALWAYS bring your weapon. This guy was obviously buying drugs or steroids, and that is why he went alone, which is common. He has compromised his Unit's, and our country's mission, and should be treated like a traitor as I should've if caught doing something.

The number is even higher then that now. The number you said was from back in 2004, it's like 1 in 6 or 1 in 5 now according to USA Today in 2008. Also to add to that, an April investigative feature in "The Nation" suggests that it did. It alleges that the US Army routinely fired hundreds of soldiers for having a personality disorder, when they were more likely suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

of course they ignore the fact that he must have been under a lot of stress to leave his post in a hellhole like afghanistan. its more rash to assume intentional desertion - there are a number of reasons a soldier would leave his buddies and his weapon behind for just a few minutes in which he could be captured.
more then a few relatives of mine served, and none of them would have done something this dumb if they wanted to live no matter how much stress they were on. name a few reasons.
first of all, any one with even the small measure of a brain cell would know not to leave the compround at any time by yourself unamed. everyone is under stress there, the question is how you deal with it. did he seek help? what I am saying is, isnt this a little strange? how many cases are there were someone just walked out?

As a proud American soldier, I will be honest and tell you that I lump war time desertion, treason and being a conscientious objector in a volunteer service together. If you are conscripted (drafted) I can understand being a conscientious objector.

The number is even higher then that now. The number you said was from back in 2004, it's like 1 in 6 or 1 in 5 now according to USA Today in 2008. Also to add to that, an April investigative feature in "The Nation" suggests that it did. It alleges that the US Army routinely fired hundreds of soldiers for having a personality disorder, when they were more likely suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

of course they ignore the fact that he must have been under a lot of stress to leave his post in a hellhole like afghanistan. its more rash to assume intentional desertion - there are a number of reasons a soldier would leave his buddies and his weapon behind for just a few minutes in which he could be captured.

If he is a deserter, he still deserves a trial.
Section C of article 85 is very clear on punishment.
(c) Any person found guilty of desertion or attempt to desert shall be punished, if the offense is committed in time of war, by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct, but if the desertion or attempt to desert occurs at any other time, by such punishment, other than death, as a court-martial may direct.

The problem is that we don't know for sure what happened. As a proud American soldier, I will be honest and tell you that I lump war time desertion, treason and being a conscientious objector in a volunteer service together. If you are conscripted (drafted) I can understand being a conscientious objector.
If he's guilty, I hope they treat him with same compassion he showed his fellow soldiers. Regardless, we need to get him, try him and either release or punish him.

Cenk isnt twisting this at all. The army has no real idea how this solider was captured. Those are the facts. If they do they are not realeasing it to the public.
So really how far are you going to twist this with no evidence? Get the solider back and figure out how he was caught after.

I didn't say the Army DOES. I'm using perfect logic though. I don't like Col. Peters cause I seriously doubt this guy was a deserter, from what I understand the guy was drinking.
What I KNOW though, is that no infantryman in their right mind is going to wander away like this guy did with no weapon, body armor, or buddies (there is evidence that tells us that's what he did).
Hopefully we'll get the guy back, I pray we will. But having read about it, what the guy did was NOT normal....

As a vet from Iraq and Afganistan, this PFC is a disgrace to the armed forces and is now a piece of propoganda for the enemy. If he was ambushed or his unit attacked I would feel for him, but buying alcohol in a place he wasn't supposed to be? I am not going to lie, people have done similiar things but they were never stupid enough to get caught. This situation is not fair on his family or other service members, the latter will undoubtedly get another "educational class" because of this PFC.

Not the case with war, so he is not an expert.And it sounds more like to me, that this guy was maybe a shitbag, that he was alone on post (my first issue) and had to shit or something (w/o rifle?).But a deserter?Doubt it.

Eh, I hope the guy lives. But I've been a bit too desensitized to all of the killing and capturing and torturing (on both sides, but moreso ours) to really care much, honestly... Other than that, this event just strikes me as just an opportunity to rub my red-white-and-blue underwear into my political opponents' faces, which I feel would be rather manipulative and make us no better than the stupidly patriotic rethugs for all eight years of the Bush administration.

As for these Fox goons, I'm not really feeling the outrage. I think O'Reilly is actually trying to defend the guy by calling him crazy (so that he just "needs help"). Calling him a deserter is a stupid assumption, and saying deserters deserve death is a stupid sentiment, but neither of those are really unexpected for Fox.

This guy called him a deserter several times & indicated ppl in the military were classifying him as a deserter.
Now the rules may have changed since I was in the military, but at that time you weren't classified as a deserter until you had been gone 30 days. Before that time you were classified as AWOL.
