Oh......before any negative comments to my previous post.....my maternal grandfather entered the U.S. Army in 1924 as a Trooper in the U.S. Cavalry ;-)
Jefferson Davis offered to free all slaves if Lincoln would let us secede peacefully. He was refused. 78% of the national economy came from taxes from the South. Lincoln could not let us go because the Northern economy would have collapsed. We did not have equal representation in congress. We had the right to secede by the Articles of Confederation. "If I thought for one second this war was being fought over slavery I would join the other side this minute. U.S. Grant
@Rikki0 You Northerners war was illegal by the Articles of Confederation. Lincoln knew this. In 1863 he issued the Emancipation Proclamation to try to give legitimacy to his war and to keep Britain from joining the South. But it only freed the slaves in the South. The North still had legal slavery until November of 1865 with the passage of the 13th Amendment. Most Northern states had already freed their slaves because it was no longer profitable. But it was still legal.
@Rikki0 No the war was not illegal the Confederacy was no longer part of the Union therefore under no protection by the Articles so there was no violation and second Britain knew after their Antietam that the South had no chance to win the war so they didnt bother wasting money or resources to join the war
How can I enjoy this song when I despise Ulysses Simpson Grant and the whole Yankee army that invaded my homeland and laid my Confederate nation low? Yet I enjoy the song immensely. Must be John Wayne!
@ARP7777777 No, the song specifically mentions Ulysses Simpson Grant, which is why I referenced him and not the other war criminals like Sherman, Sheridan, Butler, etc. Thanks
@freevirginia War Criminals! Why because they put down a rebellion and ended slavery? What was Forrest when he slaughtered Black POWs at Fort Pillow? What about Mosby and Morgan? How about Jeff Davis when he violated the loyalty oath to the United States he took as Cabinet member? Firing on Ft Sumter was a legal act I suppose. How about all of them violating the oath they took on the plain at West Point. I took the same Officer's oath at Fort Hamilton Brooklyn only I tried to keep it.
I'm from the South and damn glad the confederacy was defeating so soundly it was afraid to try again. It ended the evil treatement of both poor whites and black slaves.
The only ones that should be sad were the rich plantation owners but fuck them they were evil anyway.
The war was faught to support the rich lifestyle of the plantation owners and slave traders. The lesser educated white folks in the south were coned into supporting this evil as states rights
movie based loosely on griersons raid, objective was to stir up a hornets nest of rebels to get the Confederates attention away from the Mississippi river so Grant could land on the east side of the river and take Vicksburg. Newton station was a primary target as it was the rail hub that fed Vicksburg, the raiders moved on the average of 22 miles a day, in a zig saw fashion. by the time the Confed. realized what was going on, it was too late, Grant fought a series of battles and won them all

Great song, but I am sure it was written for the movie, about Griersons raid. The movie it come from is ,John Wayne's. The Horse Soldiers. The images presented show actions from the Mexican war to the Spanish American. Tedd's leading up San Juan Hill in one shot.
@mara235 Stan Jones, who wrote this, was a real treasure. He also wrote the Cheyenne theme, High Noon, Riders in the Sky, and Yellow Stripes from the movies Rio Grande and Escape from Fort Bravo.
