at first I thought it was stupid... But when you finally find out how to run a time below 6 sec, you look at this game in a whole different way. This week I ran my first 5,91 :D - on my PC in Stella, i do not have the Atari any more :(
This is a popular game as far as competitive Atari gaming. One of the 'big names' (lol) had a pass in the high 5's. I bet he gave his buddy a high-5. My only complaint about this game is your car is a V6 (or for some crazy reason, an inline tripz). I'm not sure if V6 rail dragsters were ever popular but one with a GMC 305 (not a 305 V8 that cries cuz its not a 327/350/383, GMC made a sixer that displaced 305 cubes). Game is too early to pretend its a turbo Buick buzzin-half-dozen, right? :-D
What? This game is fantastic. You need skill to get it to work and top your score. Just a little too much gas and it's over. I thought it was very exciting and challenging everytime you play it.
Ok sure, the entire game play lasts, if your good, less than 6.00 seconds, but you're missing the picture here. This game is 31 years old, was the first game released by activision, and contains less than 2k of code. activision was started by 4 guys, who wanted nothing more than to knock atari off it's perch. this was ONE of the games that did it.
If you're a big drag-racing fan, this game is a fun challenge. The box with it states "If you can get it to run under 6-sec, take a picture & send it to us. The world-record is 5.61...."
Trick: Hold the controller sideways, and do it in the non-steering mode. That way you're just knocking the stick back-&-forth... Far-easier to succeed that way. Also, carefully mark on the screen where the high-point of the red-line is... This and "popping the clutch" in top-gear (Wheelie) will help immensely.
OK, so the effects sucked ass, but it wasn't about that...it was about timing and how precise you could shift before blowing your engine. I remember the game had some kind of contest or something where they'd "Reward" you if you got high score. Well, I was one of those who apparently got one of the highest scores (i.e. lowest times) ever in the game.
You had to be a car guy at the core to "Get" this one. It was about reaction times. And it was a darn good game in that respect. Besides, it's easy to bag on something in hind-sight. Crane prob spent 20, maybe 30 minutes writing this! :-)
The worst game the Atari ever produced. When it came out, it cost the average price for a game, and you get about 1 minute of enjoyment. When I hear kids today talking about how some PS games could have better graphics, I wish they could be instantly transported back to the 80s when Dragster and other Atari games were top technology, then be like "What do you think of your Playstation game now! Not so sucky, is it?"
You know, I saw this game at a thrift store for about a buck the other day. Having sampled the game on the Activision Anthology set prior, I felt that buck was best spent elsewhere.
I couldn't imagine how people could have spent 20-30 bucks on a game that lasted ten seconds or less per play. If you had fun with it, great... but the game did very little for me. It's just awful.
You COULD argue that this is best played with 2-players, but then again, so is Combat... a much better game.
Of course this game is lame! It's from Activision. Their games either were pointless or unwinnable or both. Like Pitfall, where you run for 20 minutes only for the clock to stop. Or River Raid, where you don't actually get anywhere, either. These games were merely time-passers. There sure wasn't any strategy or clear goal in any of their games. But we all played them anyway!
This is a great game! One of the 2600's best. The problem here is that you clearly arent' any good at playing it. Listening to reviewers like you rip on a game while you simultaneously display a skill level that borders on incompetence has become a very wearisome YT experience. Before resorting to wisecracks, at least show that you can break a measly 6 secs. in this game. If you can't do that, then you really shouldn't be "reviewing" this game.
Looking at this video, there is no doubt this game is lame! But back in the day, I played it a lot. It required a good sense of timing, and there was something addictive "just one more time" about it. Kinda like gambling (playing the slots).
@sudiolkp you are right about that just take a look at the ps2 version of NHRA coundown to the championship based off the real life drag racing series, you have to tune, test, do your burnout and hope to god that the combination that you input on your car doesnt either put out a couple cylinders, blow the damn thing up, or hit the wall, i love drag racing to death but this review on this game is kinda a slap in the face to people who do drag racing or is involved with it.
@iceman5X75 I agree with you. Although I have nver played NHRA countdown, I think if the game were done in the proper way, drag racing could be a really fun game! I mean...come on, if they can make a popular Nascar game (cars going around in circles for hours and hours) then why not a good drag racing game?
it depends like some of the IHRA drag racing games, the newer ones like sportsman edition and professional edition, they took the fun out by not letting you tune the car the way you want it where IHRA drag racing 2 did, im waiting for the day they make pro modified official on the nhra tour now that would be fun
Do what the AVGN does. Take a dump on it, smash it with a hammer, drill through it, fling it into outer space, throw it out the window, put it in a toaster or shoot it with a flaming arrow.
Or you could do all of the above in whatever order you'd like.
"It is easy game to win thou everbody can be winner all you have to do is reach around behind your atari and pull out the power cord." Man, that was funny.
As god awful as the game seems to be, the drawing of the car is surprisingly detailed for a 2600 game. That being said, you still couldn't pay me to play this game.
@tumest Activision (& also/to a lesser extent, Imagic) really kinda "revolutionized" (if you wish to call it that) "graphics" & game play on the Atari 2600. With so many 3rd party software Co,'s, there was a LOT of crap on the market. Activision games, for the most part (this was an obvious exception), were noted for their superior graphics/game play. If you didn't know, Activision was founded by disgruntled (over software credits & bonus $) Atari programmers. They are still making games!
@tumest Also, when the engine grenades it actually kind of resebles a connecting rod and piston breaking loose from the crankshaft and being thrown at the cylinder head before coming back down through the oil pan and making a mess. Throwing a rod is the most common drag racing accident that you can graphically illustrate, so it works. More common things like breaking a radiator hose are not nearly as entertaining...
I guess its easy for people to see it the wrong way.
I didn't mean to say that Mark flatters bad products, I was saying that the way he puts everything on screen so professionally it makes even an ugly console like the Colecovision look great.
I apologize that I didn't make myself clear; I hope I properly clarified myself.
i know what your saying. the way i look at it, mark looks for the positive things in games rather than the negative. thats what i love about the classic game room. although, i do enjoy the avgn as well.
As very few have mentioned, this game can be a ton of fun with 2 players. This was one of the only games I could play with my dad way back in the day who hated vids. Good times.
I remember saving my pennies for a new game when I was about 8 and buying this piece of shit. I thought it was broken when I got it home because I kept blowing the engine. One of my greatest lifetime disappointments. Glad to see that this guy sees it for what a piece of shit it is like I did.
@AgaMbadi Wow, tuff luck. I can only imagine like....the anticipation you went thru, saving, waiting, then that final day!.....pop it in to play & then...WTF? I just tried this game on my Stella Emulator (I think I also had the cart, back when) This game is frustrating. But, just because it is tricky/hard, doesn't make it fun once you "get the hang of it". It's STILL boring afterward.
just a thought: if you don't have one of the atari stunt cycle consoles around, you should pick one up for sure :) THAT is addictive. The two-handled stunt cycle atari console....... circia 79 i think
once you get the timing to this down, this game is SO addictive. I fucking HATED it at first, but you CAN get the hang of it, and I am a mediocre gamer at best. This game kicks so much ass
@sonick808 Here here! Graphics-wise this game was a dud, but it was all about mastering the joystick. You'd literally have to "smack" the joystick on the side to shift and stuff, while at the same time hitting the red button for the throttle. Once you mastered the shifting and red-lining effect (careful not to blow the engine!), you could acquire some serious "drag" times. I think my best wast in the 3-somethings.
This game requires 2 PLAYERS!! Shamefully there is only one other game other than this one that has done drag racing right. Test Drive for PS2. Drag racing is all about jumping off the line the quickest and shifting perfectly without over revving. I hate most Atari games but this one is actually fun. It's much better than EA's rendition of a drag racing.
hear hear. I'm not sure about test drive since I haven't played it (but probably will now on your recommendation vs. this). As far as Atari Dragster, it is a damn blast. I can keep the pedal mashed and in the powerband just a touch below blowing the engine and turn some serious times. I sent in a sub-6 second pic to activison long ago but i don't think i ever got my patch
I love need for speed, but the drag racing is terrible. In a real drag race, you cannot win with crappy shifting and boosting. I hate most of Test Drive, but the Drag racing is awesome. The quickest off the line and the best shifter wins. Need for speed is Fast and Furious drag racing with the giant tachometer and one touch lane shifting. In other words it's garbage.
I've never owned or played this, but I've read about it and now seen the review here.
It really looks like an impressive game to me. No, it's not mainstream. It's a drag racing simulator for drag racing fans. It would be fun if you're into it.
There aren't many games that simulate drag racing in this detail, which says a lot for a 2600 game. Very impressive programming IMO.
dont dis the atari, if it wasnt for this console you wouldnt have all the gaming markets/games you have today. This game back in the day wasnt that bad, maybe if he was actually racing a friend or something it would be more fun. Everyone today is focused more on graphics. Atari, NES, SEGA, had some games that will still blow the socks off some of todays games.
well alrighty then. the reason i called you stupid was because you felt the need to explain the obvious as if you were the only person to have had those thoughts. also "everyone today is focused more on graphics" is a globalized inaccurate statement.
and not once did mark dis on the atari 2600, nor would he ever do so. his criticisms were purely of the game.
there is a drag racing game on the original xbox i have it as a pirate copy and o boy does it suck you spend ages tryin to line it up get a gud start figure out the controls and the load time is awful shit game worse than this
I like this review a lot. Mainly because Mark's sleepy voice is perfect at expressing how boring this game is. I love it when he reviews lousy games, and this one barely even qualifies as a game in the first place.
Wow... and I thought ET for the Atari 2600 sucked ass... well... it did. This one just sucked harder. I do remember playing this and launching the cart across the room yelling stuff out that a kid shouldn't yell! LOL
I used to like playing luge on some n64 winter olympics whilst stoned. I remember quite enjoying it. You could be on crack and dragster would still be shit.
You mean Ridge Racer 6, because Ridge Racer 7 is an updated version of Ridge Racer 6 on the 360, sporting a higher resolution. Ah... you are just a 360 fanboy discriminating the PS3, which is pathetic lol At least the PS3 remains working after 6 months with no featured flaws..... ya.. featured flaws.... the RRoD if a feature in the 360, how nice.
Sweet irony... you have no idea how resolutions and aspect ratios work, do you? Last gen there hasn't been a single game release NATIVE 1080p. The highest resolution on consoles last gen was 1080i upscaled. The only games so far this gen that have 1080p NATIVE is Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, WipEout HD, Ridge Racer and two or so other titles. Fucking idiot you are.
sweet retarded irony i see your a ps3 fanboy eh and also allot of games are in 1080p rtard ok lets go for games on xbox and 360 cod4 lets see halo 3 and also re5 i know this becuse on xbox on the back of the box it says 1080p and becuse i have a hd tv and a hd xobx(xbox360 elite )
Good god your grammar is horrible, before writing a comment remember to punctuate. And also, CoD4 does not play in native 1080p, it actually plays in a resolution below 720p and upscales it, Halo 3's native resolution is 1024x768. When you see "1080p" on the back of the box, that means that the game is compatible with 1080p resolution TVs, thats all. So you are clearly confused.
your a complete retard halo 3 Native res 1080i/ 1080P you fuck tard also my tv tells me what res its in and on all the games a listed it said 1080 fucking P
On my TV it also says 1080i/1080p, but once again, that's the upscaled resolution, not the fucking NATIVE! Don't even bother starting arguments seeing as yo have no clue what you're talking about.
Yeah, cool. Don't you need to go buy school supplies or something? Your 3rd grade teacher will be awfully mad if you don't have a pencil on the first day!
wow 3ed grade yep im in the third FUcking grade you trolling mother fucker you know what a stoner like you who actually watchs Jay and mother fucking silent bob doesnt know shit exeped how to roll a muther fucking joint you stoner bitch
That's bit harsh, Mark. You really need a friend to race against to make it fun.

SmoothSlushice 2 years ago

Gerold1981 2 years ago
He is not dissing this because it is on Atari 2600, he often gives positive Atari 2600 reviews to other games.

look whos talking, be a little more constructive with your comments
Gerold1981 2 years ago 2
well alrighty then. the reason i called you stupid was because you felt the need to explain the obvious as if you were the only person to have had those thoughts. also "everyone today is focused more on graphics" is a globalized inaccurate statement.
and not once did mark dis on the atari 2600, nor would he ever do so. his criticisms were purely of the game.
pbandja10 2 years ago
I'm glad you're reviewing terrible games too.
Thanks!

drag racing is boring
damiannerd 2 years ago
I like this review a lot. Mainly because Mark's sleepy voice is perfect at expressing how boring this game is. I love it when he reviews lousy games, and this one barely even qualifies as a game in the first place.

My brother and I played this for hours on end trying to beat 4.90 (or whatever the time was).
I still have the 2600 cartridge and the worn out controller from trying to shake that stick back and forth.

Wow... and I thought ET for the Atari 2600 sucked ass... well... it did. This one just sucked harder. I do remember playing this and launching the cart across the room yelling stuff out that a kid shouldn't yell! LOL

We need more Atari!
And this is about the fourth game Mark hasn't liked. Considering that he's not picky (at all), this must be quite bad indeed.

It still looks better than "Ridge Racer 7" though !!!
jerryjoe88 2 years ago
You mean Ridge Racer 6, because Ridge Racer 7 is an updated version of Ridge Racer 6 on the 360, sporting a higher resolution. Ah... you are just a 360 fanboy discriminating the PS3, which is pathetic lol At least the PS3 remains working after 6 months with no featured flaws..... ya.. featured flaws.... the RRoD if a feature in the 360, how nice.
GamingPalooza 2 years ago
It's Ridge Racer! Riiiiidge Racer!!!
CharX782 2 years ago
Native 1080p in fact. 360 has never been able to have native 1080p.
Blogsterle 2 years ago
Bullshit. Even the original Xbox has native 1080p.
evildwarf 2 years ago
God you're a moron. Don't even try to pull that shit here if you have no idea what you've even talking about.
Blogsterle 2 years ago 2
yes it does morron -_-
danceallot 2 years ago
Sweet irony... you have no idea how resolutions and aspect ratios work, do you? Last gen there hasn't been a single game release NATIVE 1080p. The highest resolution on consoles last gen was 1080i upscaled. The only games so far this gen that have 1080p NATIVE is Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, WipEout HD, Ridge Racer and two or so other titles. Fucking idiot you are.
Blogsterle 2 years ago
sweet retarded irony i see your a ps3 fanboy eh and also allot of games are in 1080p rtard ok lets go for games on xbox and 360 cod4 lets see halo 3 and also re5 i know this becuse on xbox on the back of the box it says 1080p and becuse i have a hd tv and a hd xobx(xbox360 elite )
danceallot 2 years ago
Good god your grammar is horrible, before writing a comment remember to punctuate. And also, CoD4 does not play in native 1080p, it actually plays in a resolution below 720p and upscales it, Halo 3's native resolution is 1024x768. When you see "1080p" on the back of the box, that means that the game is compatible with 1080p resolution TVs, thats all. So you are clearly confused.
iamVERYrandom 2 years ago
lol, It is youtube. I don't think we really need good grammar for youtube.
TheWoWKing1 2 years ago
the 1080p logo on the back of the case only stands for that it is compatible with full HD screens lol...
emretzzon 2 years ago
My god you're a complete idiot.
Halo 3 Native Resolution: 640p
Call of Duty 4 Native Resolution: 600p
Resident Evil 5 Native Resolution: 720p
All of these games are upscaled to play in 1080p. God I hope you never show your face here again.
Blogsterle 2 years ago
there's no such a thing as 640 or 600p, there's 480i 480p 720p 1080i and 1080p
xxxREDOXxxx 2 years ago
Yes there is.
1024 x 600 resolution = 614,400 pixels. Its 307,200 pixels below 1280 x 720 (HD)
Blogsterle 2 years ago
theres one more. 1400p or something close. 2560x1600 rules!
DavidPlim 2 years ago
Wrong. Those are standard TV resolutions. There is a 640p and 600p.
Markolore 2 years ago
your a complete retard halo 3 Native res 1080i/ 1080P you fuck tard also my tv tells me what res its in and on all the games a listed it said 1080 fucking P
danceallot 2 years ago
Actually, no, Halo 3's native res is slightly under 720p
Markolore 2 years ago
On my TV it also says 1080i/1080p, but once again, that's the upscaled resolution, not the fucking NATIVE! Don't even bother starting arguments seeing as yo have no clue what you're talking about.
Blogsterle 2 years ago
You forgot about 381p 483i and 9321p.
