  • What a cool video! I am in ceramics and it is one of my favorite classes. I am in high school but the teacher knows so much so its nice that I can correctly make things on the potters wheel. Very neat jar!

  • I wish they taught how to do this in my pottery class!

  • So pretty! It looks like something you would find in a store

  • how do you centre the clay so god damn fast! great work

  • your extremely talented, i want to learn

  • Will it blend?

  • Wow. That was amazing! I love the design you did! :D

  • thats amazing

  • powerful hands, artful!

  • Is that a slip or an engobe? Cool design technique btw... subscribed.

  • oh so beautiful! where do you buy the pottery wheel?

  • 0:47 looks like the wormy things from Zelda

  • lol @ the auto-focus, but when you put the top on, i was thinking "ta-daa" :D

  • It is crazy how talented u r. It took 5 min for u to make a pot and lid?!?! CRAZY!!!

  • You do realize that you drive me (this poor 60 year old lady who has been throwing for over 3 decades) to cussing. I faithfully wedge up my clay for each pot, on occasion still get bubbles in it and then have to (am literally forced to sit down and watch this vid by gun point) watch you throw onto the wheel an unwedged, holey chunk of clay that magically gets turned into a piece of art and craft. #(&*!

  • thats cool i have never seen how pottery is done

  • Question: How long had you been throwing before you were able to make a magnificent pot it only one pull? It seems that it takes me nearly half an hour to make a pot half that size! :( I just wanted to say You are an absolute inspiration!! If only I could throw a pot that size!! Thanks for he video!

  • have you ever worked with oxides when firing

  • Tell me please, first a bisque firing for how long and what temperature, then after glaze is applied, a second firing for how long and what temperature. Thanks! I'm new to this as you can clearly tell.

  • awesome video!

question.. when you finish a pot, do you leave it out in the open air to trim the next day or do you cover it?

  • @innagaddadavita12345 We leave the pots in the open air in a cool damper room of the pottery so they don't dry out too much. But smaller stuff we cover in polythene if it's a bit warmer.

    Cheers,dan

  • Badass! I wanna try this at school next week!:)

  • It is always a pleasure watching a skilled potter at work. Thank you for sharing.

  • I really like your videos... what is that stuff u are putting the design on with.. and on the lid? Im pretty sure its slip, but how do u make it? Dosnt look like normal slip... what do you mix it with? And after the bisque firing what do u glaze it with to make the design show well?

    Thanks

  • one of the most beautiful things about ceramcis and pottery is that i love watching how different others are from the way i throw on my own wheel at the high school. it is fascinating how fast and how much water you use to make beautiful pottery. I never use water when raising walls and I usually spen 3-4 days on one large piece. it is curiousity that drives us all

  • wobble wobble goes the pot

  • Hey Dan, this is my third year in high school ceramics and I had some questions about throwing on the wheel. Im pretty good on technique but I had a question about the way you throw. Do you cone your clay before opening? And what speed is your wheel going.

  • im just learning ceramics and im kinda wondering if you ever put a signiture on your pottery

  • That's so crazy! You centered in like half a second!

  • What type of bat system are you using. Is it available commercially or your own design? Love the videos. I am getting back into throwing after a few year hiatus. Thanks for sharing your expertise

  • you would be an even greater potter than you already are if you secured your bat down a little more! :)

  • you make trimming the bottom of the pots look so east... i would like some pointers on that when it is still on the wheel. thanx

  • that was seriously only like.... one pull!!!

  • What is the stuff that you add to it at the end with the paint brush?

  • now was that just a slip that you put on at the end?

  • About how many pounds of clay did you use to make it and how tall is it ? I'm just learning to throw on the wheel.

  • Hey, Dan thanks for all the great videos. Its really amazing watching them!

  • wow dan is an amazing potter. i think he is the best iv ever seen. his centering video helped me out a lot. so for all the beginners like me take a look at it

  • what's the red thing you put in the middle of the wheel and how does it stick to the wheel?

  • hey, i am curious about your first pull. I cant tell how you bring the clay up. It appears to be the heel of your right hand but im not sure could you explain it or if you have a video of pulling provide a link? that would be great

    nick

  • P.S. your video on centering was very helpful. Thanks!

  • I love all of your videos, I've been watching them to look at someone else's techniques other than my ceramic teacher's, and I was wondering how you fire your pieces just once, and if it needs a certain kind of glaze, because we fire them once before and after glazing. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm a total begginer who just loves ceramics :)

  • Hi,not a stupid question at all.

    We fire twice.

    1st a biscuit of bisque firing,then a glaze firing.

    Cheers,Dan.

  • I like the quick decoration, nice pot.

  • inspiring!

  • what kind of bats are you using? and how are you attatching them?

  • Hi,I did a video explaining it a while ago.

Just type "Bat System" in the search box and all will be revealed.

    Thanks.

  • dnl5649,

about a day and let it cool down then another day and then paint it with paint or glaze with glaze u have 2 fire it again

  • Bravo!

  • very nice! i love that all in one move on the shoulder :)

  • you use a ltt of water i thought you weren't suppose to use that much

  • oh man ur suppose to use as much as u need as long as u get no friction with ur hands and the clay

  • Beautiful man!

  • nice cylinder. I'm still having difficulty slap-centering my clay!

  • i just learned pottery but your amazing

  • can you use a slip made from the same clay that your throwing and just add cobalt to it? john

  • That's all we do.

The more oxide you add the stronger the colour.

    Cheers.

  • very nice! i was wondering how did that swirling design.. couple of q's what is the glaze or oxide your putting on? and guess you fire once? john

  • The swirl is just done with my finger, moving it up and down as the pot spins.

The slip is just Cobalt Oxide slip and I fire twice, biscuit then the glaze firing.

    Cheers,Dan

  • how long do i fire a small clay pot in a wood fired kiln?

  • You've the hands of a surgeon!

  • Wow your amazing. I just started pottery and its tough but you make it look so easy. How do you do that first pull? If you dont care to tell me.

    thanks

  • i have so much trouble making the gallery!

my lip never stays on center and collapses

    sometimes too

    any tips??

  • Make sure you have a good thickness of clay before making the lip otherwise it will be too thin and collapse, and it's got to be perfectly level otherwise you'll go off centre.

  • sweet!

  • That is hardcore talent. Wow.

  • GREAT WORK!!!!

    Gerda

  • WOW!!!

  • I love how you did it all so smoothly. I liked your design, too.

  • Lovely! I really like your application of slip when the ware is still green.

    Are these once-fired?

  • Hi,

The pots are biscuit fired and then glazed so the design comes through the glaze.

The slips were Cobalt and Nickel so it'll come out as a blue and Brown colour.

  • You are crazy amazing. I have come to the understanding that some people love clay and for other gifted people the clay loves them. I think you lucked out on both :)

  • Poetry in motion. The idea of fitting the lid when it is dry enough to trim is great. I will try it. A side camera angle would let us see your hands. Claire

  • Great pot!!! Thanks for sharing :)

This was the first time I've seen a lid thrown this way, gonna try it.

  • Thanks, flat lids are really easy to do and only take seconds to make and are ok for smallish pots.

They're not ideal for really big pots though as they do tend to warp.

Then you need to throw a curved one.

  • That looks GREAT!!! Would you mind taking a minute to tell us what you're decorating with, and/or would you let us see them after firing? That jar and lid are to die for!

    Thanks for sharing!!
