Mick Ronson: We're discussing a musical GIANT here and SO humble! Mick played with and/or produced these legends: Roger Daltrey, T-Bone Burnett, Bob Dylan, Ellen Foley, Elton John, Lulu, John Mellencamp, Roger McGuinn, Van Morrison, Bob Neuwirth, Morrissey, Mick Jones, The Payolas, Pure Prairie League, Lou Reed - WOW! So underrated. Didn't get the R&R nomination this year either...he $%#$@'ing deserves it.

Nice bit of footage, fanks (I'm from South London me, mate) for posting it. MIck Ronson was a musical genius; there's no way that Bowie's Ziggy-era albums would have sounded as they do without him. Same goes for Lou Reed's Transformer. Ronson always comes across as a really nice and intelligent guy in interviews too. And he also had the good taste to cover one song - Music Is Lethal - by Italy's best Rock artist Lucio Battisti!
It's nice to hear Ronno confirming what Angie has said all along, which is that she (along with Cherry Vanilla and Leee Black Childers) designed Bowie's image. He was all long hair and floppy hats before that.
Oh please, if you're suggesting that David drained artistic ideas from Angie you're way off the mark. The only contribution she made was the way his 1st Ziggy haircut should look like.
What year is this? how soon before he passed? How 'bout him giving Angie credit? Wow, he really was as sweet as his reputation. Too bad he never got his deserved props. RIP, Mick, we love you.
Hi to all others who make it to Mick Ronson's video's & interviews. His contribution to 'British Rock' with the spiders was huge. A humble guy from Hull, who's playing still stands up today. Listen to him & weep Brit Poppers! REEESPECT
fucking brilliant talk shite for 2 mins and then ask what was the question,,pure class ,,long live rock,n,roll...no way the bands out now could come close to these guys
You could go through a generation and not miss how good this man was. It's like he said, maybe he shoulda been richer, maybe not, he has his health, 'Play, Don't Worry', so to speak. I no longer get angry w people who don't yet know who Mick Ronson is. People know Mozart, Beethoven, but Mick is like Brahms, or in modern day, Gorecki.
Cant wait to see it!! i'd have loved to meet mick, my mam looked after his tortoise when she was a kid :) I use the same brand of strings he used to use, cant afford the same guitar though unfortunately!! mick could really make that thing sing :)
I'd also like to point out that (as far as I'm concerned) any guy who keeps a tortoise as a pet - much less a 'Rock Star' of Mick's caliber - is bound to be a likable, decent sort...clearly!
I am hoping that anyone that sees ]this going to be ready for the documentary about Mick Ronson due out this autumn. Get ready it is going to be great!!!
First tiime I saw him was at the Marquee Club, 1980 Floor Show with Bowie in 1973... he was magical. Thank you for posting this video. Any images left of Mick are to be treasured. X
David and Mick were such close friends, and I think David of all people knew just how talented and unique Mick was. He's never had a better guitar player, or one with whom he was as close. I remember I saw this one picture of Mick and David, still in their outfits from a performance (or maybe they just went around like that) eating in a diner. They were laughing, and so relaxed. David is absolutely amazing, but he lost half of himself when Mick died.
They are talking about themselves like their some god dam divine f*cking revelation, don't prop them up any further, they don't deserve it. Everyone's a rock star, everyones gonna be a f*cking rock god and goddess if that's what they want, fuck these jerks, Andy believed everyone was special, these guys are animals.
If, funkateer854 (fr.3wks.ago), you are referring to daisystrangelove's comment (fr.4mos.ago), then, I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments! My responses to her rantings were a bit more polite, however. In retrospect, maybe I should have simply said:
Figured that was probably the case: if YouTube would just match replies to comments (in a timely manner), I'd of been certain. That would've saved me a few words and some time; since, I couldn't of said it any better than you did to begin with!
'Preciate you, man! We got Mick's back covered....
Talk about timing: was just trying to post a comment (some error occurred...it got lost!) on someone's channel about Angel No. 9, and Mick (in general), when I noticed yours! (Have you checked out the 'Classic Rock Award' [the 2-part 'related' videos] for/about Mick?)
To: daisystrangelove (fr.4mos.ago), Was that intended to be a serious comment, or, did you simply post whatever came out during a bout of Tourette's syndrome? Besides that: Who is this 'Andy' you refer to?! You (apparently) admire him; since you said, "Andy believed everyone was special". If that's the case - and you agree with Andy's thinking - then, you wouldn't say things like: "they don't deserve it", "fuck these jerks", and, "these guys are animals." Those words simply reflect YOU!
"Animals" are unthinking, conforming members of herds; whereas, humans are distinguished from them by individual, as well as collective, capacity to think - exploring abstract concepts - in order to create; just as: Mick Ronson, David Bowie, and Ian Hunter...the "jerks" and "animals" you refer to...have - THANKFULLY - done. Without their creative genius, we're little more than drones in beehives and ant colonies!
That album Ronson came down to play on in London is called Fully Qualified Survior by Michael Chapman . It's a classic with great guitar playing . The track Postcard from Scarborough is one of my favorites .
Thanks to 3xfilm for posting this. I am one of those who think that Mick Ronson's songwriting was good and almost excellent on "Heaven and Hull". I never tire of hearing "Don't Look Down" and "Life is a River". Hunter, Ronson and Bowie have brought me much pleasure....Comfort when I was depressed...inspiration when I was lonely...a sense of belonging to something happening when things went well. Let's not play them off against one another. We owe all three of them. Greg G. of Portland
Ronno what a lovely man and a great talent. Bowie knows the depth of your input into those early classic albums. They wouldn't be classics without you e.g. Life on Mars it was Ronno's classical training with his string arrangements that makes LoM so beautiful.
@leonoel42 Try this out: Strangely enough both Paul Anka and David Bowie were slated to write lyrics for "My Way". Most all of the arrangements were done. The record company picked Anka's lyrics, so Sinatra sang it as "My Way", then Mick and David went back and ever so slightly tweaked the arrangement and turned it into "Life on Mars." Nice way to put it right back in the record execs' faces, Boys!
@painxtreme Duh, I forgot to say the most important part. Play My Way, then Life on Mars immediately after (or vice versa), and it becomes crystal clear. You can almost play them simultaneously without it sounding off at all.
Ronson was an awesome musician and arranger. It's hard for me to believe that some people can play guitar AND piano, 2 very difficult instuments to master.
I met Ian and Mick while touring in the mid 70's in Detroit. The difference was that Ian shook your hand but Mick KISSED you! Oh how I miss him! RIP Mick!
People just ignore the fact that Ronson was not a great songwriter... and did not have the vision to forge a solo career. But he was second to none as a gun for hire... always in demand by Great Visionaries and songwriters like Bowie, Hunter, and Dylan.
As educated "consumers" I personally don't think it is fair for us to make comparisons or criticisms of individual "producers" of the great music that we all enjoy, - it was melted down and recreated in an era of competition, collaboration, inspiration and occasionally blatant copying. We shall never see their like again, and those of us who had to suffer the barren years that preceded this greatness and were part of the emerging musical extravaganza will be eternally grateful.
7-7-80,my eighteenth birthday,I saw Ian Hunter w Mick Ronson at Toads,New Haven. One of the greatest Rockin' club shows ever. Packed in and sweaty, people pissing against the stage, rather than lose their place. At the end Mick wiped his sweaty brow and threw the towel into the audience. I wiped my brow and threw it back. Mick gave me "the look of death" Great, great show though!
It is so incredibly ignorant when people claims that Bowie would be nothing without Ronson. And others say he ripped off Iggy Pop, and that his albums with Eno would be nothing without Eno, that he ripped off Stevie Ray Vaguhan, Kraftwerk, Lou Reed, or whoever. The truth is that he is the only renaissance man in rock music, even a greater genius than Dylan. (Even though Dylan is probably a finer poet.) He is the only person in rock music who can be compared to artists like Picasso.
The fact of the matter is that he DID borrow lots of things that he liked from all of these artists. Look at "The Idiot" and then look at "Low"; there's a lot of commonalities. But that's where I think Bowie's talent lies: He is incredibly adept at taking what he likes about other people's styles and incorporating them into his own. I don't think that he's ripping them off (and let's be honest, you could make that case for a LOT of modern artists) but you can certainly hear their influence.
I don't disagree with you. Certainly, Bowie borrows from other artists. But opposed to manny lesser artists who mainly borrows from one idol (Bowie f.ex.) he borrows from a lot of other artists simultaneously and makes something unique from it. By the way, I think The Idiot/Low is not a very good example, because The Idiot is a very atypical Iggy album and Low really doesn't sound anything like Iggy Pop. I think artists like Neu were more influential on Low's sound.
Iv'e never heard Mick Ronson talk before. A great loss. Bowie owed him a lot in his early days. RCA made a couple of solo Ronson albums after Bowie and they were really good but I don't think sold. His touring with Dylan seemed a bit strange but cool thing to do. RIP Mick.
Thanks very much. Great to hear about Micks start in the biz. Also interesting to hear him be so cool about the lack of earnings when he was a very big part of the beginning of it all. Very much missed.
it was never hard for me to understand, but some hardcore Ronson fans (and others) it is. I mean, you don't see Carlos Alomar fans bitching because Bowie stopped using him? and partly i think some Ronson fans blame it on Bowie that he never had much success. I think he should have, and he was worthy of it, but it didn't happen. Why? I don't know. it just did.
Interesting debate, I think I mostly agree. I acknowledge that I'm slightly biased because I think that Mick Ronson was a great guitarist, and that the Spiders owe a lot of their success to his instrumentation. However I think that Ronson also owes Bowie for similar reasons; bands are a dynamic, and it was the combination of parts that made them successful, not any one member. I'm sure Bowie would have been successful no matter WHO his band was, but I doubt that they would had the same sound.
thank you, finally someone with some sense. i just find it incredibly irritating to hear all the things people say about Bowie and Ronson, as if he somehow owed Ronson so much and then backstabbed him afterwards. It wasn't like the Ziggy and the Spiders from Mars were going to be around forever.
and yes, a lot of artists do that and whether you like it or not it happens, people should know better than complain about something that happens all the time.
mick ronson what a gent....it's weird that after 30 odd years just feeling the reality that he's not here and have been watching lots of old footage love you mick
i don't know why people get so worked up over Bowie's success compared to Ronson's. those who complain he wasn't paid enough by Bowie, you should know Bowie wasn't paid enough either by his management, he barely made any money at all up until the early 80s. both of them were great together, but Bowie wasn't content to keep out churnin glitter rock so he had to cut off Ronson.
Ronno was harshly treated by bowie at the time but micks spirit will always live on,typical hull lad..get knocked down then get back up again, listen to randy rhoads&steve jones guitar styles..micks in there as large as life..RIP
Its pretty awesome really I knew that MR was from Hull but never ever got close to knowing anymore although I think I heard about him thru interviews with Bowie he seems such a well respected person-I've read that Bowie was guilty of ditching people as soon as he had used them but thats just the nature of the guy. Ronson seems a very normal bloke he can thank Bowie for making his name.
Hey Miketheserb -- our band was fronting Mick and Ian on their Minneapolis tour stop. Mick had produced our recording session back in 1987, and he stayed at my parents' house for almost two weeks. He got toasted on scotch every night and always called my mom "Luv"...good times...sure miss him.
What a really peculiar vid - the interview was like being at the dentists - Mick didn't look well and that stuff at the end with the minder/manager whoever.. strange.
Mick Ronson was a great person. My Auntie knew him well in Hull. I got the Only After Dark LP and its autographed. Is that valuable at all? Id never part with it tho. I also got one of Bowie's plectrums and one of his ties from Serious moonlight tour.
This is from the Hunter/Ronson Band N. American tour of fall '89. They were supporting the "Y U I Orta" (or something like that) album. I was in the opening band for that tour and watched Ronson every night and he and Hunter were stellar. Ronson was an absolute sweetheart and nice guy and was always up for a chat or a bit of guitar playing. I was young and never took him up on the offer to play guitars... Duh!
i used to see him hang at the scrap bar in NYC with Iggy., realy nice person, chill, allot of people do not realize that Randy Rhoads was on to him before he died as well., Mick changed allot of things in a positive way out there.
I am getting it mixed up with a BBC show on the roots of ziggy it is posted on youtube under "HANG ON TO YOURSELF 1/3" sure somebody will be able to tell you the show. Excellent show great clips of mick.
Few more clips of the same interview is on Classic Albums: Transformer DVD. For Mick talking about Dave years check also Bowie story (Chameleon of pop)
I got slated on here once cos I made comments that Mick was finished after he and Bowie parted. I honestly didnt mean that, I meant as a solo stage performer. As far as Bowie goes, well if he couldnt make his own brother's funeral, Mick had no chance and I love Mick and David but thats David Bowie suppose !! RIP Mick !!
... And finally - thanks for such a rare stuff!!! Great to hear Mick talking about his work, with his pleasant voice and "trademark" accent, and without a trace of what they call "star fever". Solo is excellent! I guess it's soundcheck at Montmartre, Feb 1990 -- the whole version of 'Tell It Like It Is' is 20 minutes long actually! Does anybody has it in its entirety?
...And the fact Dave didn't perform at Memorial concerts is disrespect not only for Mick's memory but also for all these devoted people who made these gigs happen. Though - Joe Elliot replaced him brilliantly on lead vocals on all these Spiders songs.
The fact Dave didn't attend funeral is just one more evidence that, even if he really is a great artist, he doesn't know about such things as "friends" and "gratitude". From the other side, perhaps his absence was for the better -- there were only those who REALLY loved and missed Mick.
you all got this a bit twisted.bowie has 354 million fortune but the arrangements and guitar work\solos made the man his fame.before Ronson he was a struggling folk artist. Two years after he sacked Ronson the guy was working in a ticket office in Hull.He obviously got ripped off and Bowie knew this so he did not even attend his funeral. Please stop making your heros into gods!!!
i'm not making Bowie into a saint, but it's annoying to hear people complain about him just because he went on to bigger success and fame unlike Ronson, who was great, but didn't cut it in the end. It's not like Bowie deliberately went out of his way to harm Ronson's career. They had a parting of ways, and Bowie wasn't content to play the same old he was playing so he cut off Ronson and the others. the albums are under the name Bowie, not bowie and ronson, nor any other name.
It hurts me all the shit that Bowie gets from his fans though, because I love Bowie too, and I don't want to believe that he actually denied him credit or didn't pay him enough.
(Sorry to shout but..)THIS IS GREAT! Where did this clip come from?! Whoever put this up -- I love ya for it!! Gun Metal Blue Tele...great tone at the top of the clip. Does anyone know what setup he had? A post here mentioned 2 stomp boxes, delay and F.Twin....
The 1st Hunter solo Lp is so f**king great! Btw..'Play, Don't.." and "Slaughter.." were both released on CD. Check amazon to see if still in print. RONNO!!!
One of the Greatest and the most humble.... A huge loss to many Ronno thanks

Hi to all others who make it to Mick Ronson's video's & interviews. His contribution to 'British Rock' with the spiders was huge. A humble guy from Hull, who's playing still stands up today. Listen to him & weep Brit Poppers! REEESPECT

Cant wait to see it!! i'd have loved to meet mick, my mam looked after his tortoise when she was a kid :) I use the same brand of strings he used to use, cant afford the same guitar though unfortunately!! mick could really make that thing sing :)
random971 2 years ago 2
You got that right!
I'd also like to point out that (as far as I'm concerned) any guy who keeps a tortoise as a pet - much less a 'Rock Star' of Mick's caliber - is bound to be a likable, decent sort...clearly!
(As is your mam for looking after it!)

The song is "Tell It Like It Is". It's on Ian Hunter's album "YUI "ORTA". They toured in 1988-89 and played that number early in the set.

RIP, Mick!

If, funkateer854 (fr.3wks.ago), you are referring to daisystrangelove's comment (fr.4mos.ago), then, I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments! My responses to her rantings were a bit more polite, however. In retrospect, maybe I should have simply said:

Talk about timing: was just trying to post a comment (some error occurred...it got lost!) on someone's channel about Angel No. 9, and Mick (in general), when I noticed yours! (Have you checked out the 'Classic Rock Award' [the 2-part 'related' videos] for/about Mick?)
RedRadRoot 2 years ago
To: daisystrangelove (fr.4mos.ago), Was that intended to be a serious comment, or, did you simply post whatever came out during a bout of Tourette's syndrome? Besides that: Who is this 'Andy' you refer to?! You (apparently) admire him; since you said, "Andy believed everyone was special". If that's the case - and you agree with Andy's thinking - then, you wouldn't say things like: "they don't deserve it", "fuck these jerks", and, "these guys are animals." Those words simply reflect YOU!
RedRadRoot 2 years ago
P.S. - To: daisystrangelove (fr.4mos.ago),
Have you not learned/realized (yet):

Life on Mars it was Ronno's classical training with his string arrangements that makes LoM so beautiful.
leonoel42 3 years ago
@leonoel42 Try this out: Strangely enough both Paul Anka and David Bowie were slated to write lyrics for "My Way". Most all of the arrangements were done. The record company picked Anka's lyrics, so Sinatra sang it as "My Way", then Mick and David went back and ever so slightly tweaked the arrangement and turned it into "Life on Mars." Nice way to put it right back in the record execs' faces, Boys!
painxtreme 1 year ago
@painxtreme Duh, I forgot to say the most important part. Play My Way, then Life on Mars immediately after (or vice versa), and it becomes crystal clear. You can almost play them simultaneously without it sounding off at all.

People just ignore the fact that Ronson was not a great songwriter... and did not have the vision to forge a solo career. But he was second to none as a gun for hire... always in demand by Great Visionaries and songwriters like Bowie, Hunter, and Dylan.
DeeDeeTwo 3 years ago

(Even though Dylan is probably a finer poet.) He is the only person in rock music who can be compared to artists like Picasso.
ivankaramasov 3 years ago
The fact of the matter is that he DID borrow lots of things that he liked from all of these artists. Look at "The Idiot" and then look at "Low"; there's a lot of commonalities. But that's where I think Bowie's talent lies: He is incredibly adept at taking what he likes about other people's styles and incorporating them into his own. I don't think that he's ripping them off (and let's be honest, you could make that case for a LOT of modern artists) but you can certainly hear their influence.
EternalCynic 3 years ago
I don't disagree with you. Certainly, Bowie borrows from other artists. But opposed to manny lesser artists who mainly borrows from one idol (Bowie f.ex.) he borrows from a lot of other artists simultaneously and makes something unique from it. By the way, I think The Idiot/Low is not a very good example, because The Idiot is a very atypical Iggy album and Low really doesn't sound anything like Iggy Pop. I think artists like Neu were more influential on Low's sound.
ivankaramasov 3 years ago
Iv'e never heard Mick Ronson talk before. A great loss. Bowie owed him a lot in his early days. RCA made a couple of solo Ronson albums after Bowie and they were really good but I don't think sold. His touring with Dylan seemed a bit strange but cool thing to do. RIP Mick.

it was never hard for me to understand, but some hardcore Ronson fans (and others) it is. I mean, you don't see Carlos Alomar fans bitching because Bowie stopped using him? and partly i think some Ronson fans blame it on Bowie that he never had much success. I think he should have, and he was worthy of it, but it didn't happen. Why? I don't know. it just did.
"that stuff will keep you young" sure thing.
motellife 3 years ago 3
Interesting debate, I think I mostly agree. I acknowledge that I'm slightly biased because I think that Mick Ronson was a great guitarist, and that the Spiders owe a lot of their success to his instrumentation. However I think that Ronson also owes Bowie for similar reasons; bands are a dynamic, and it was the combination of parts that made them successful, not any one member. I'm sure Bowie would have been successful no matter WHO his band was, but I doubt that they would had the same sound.
EternalCynic 3 years ago
thank you, finally someone with some sense. i just find it incredibly irritating to hear all the things people say about Bowie and Ronson, as if he somehow owed Ronson so much and then backstabbed him afterwards. It wasn't like the Ziggy and the Spiders from Mars were going to be around forever.
and yes, a lot of artists do that and whether you like it or not it happens, people should know better than complain about something that happens all the time.

i don't know why people get so worked up over Bowie's success compared to Ronson's. those who complain he wasn't paid enough by Bowie, you should know Bowie wasn't paid enough either by his management, he barely made any money at all up until the early 80s. both of them were great together, but Bowie wasn't content to keep out churnin glitter rock so he had to cut off Ronson.

Its pretty awesome really I knew that MR was from Hull but never ever got close to knowing anymore although I think I heard about him thru interviews with Bowie he seems such a well respected person-I've read that Bowie was guilty of ditching people as soon as he had used them but thats just the nature of the guy. ... And finally - thanks for such a rare stuff!!! Great to hear Mick talking about his work, with his pleasant voice and "trademark" accent, and without a trace of what they call "star fever". ...And the fact Dave didn't perform at Memorial concerts is disrespect not only for Mick's memory but also for all these devoted people who made these gigs happen. Though - Joe Elliot replaced him brilliantly on lead vocals on all these Spiders songs.

This is the truth, i was there.

this isn't the one (i can't find it) but picasso is the only fitting tribute to Mick, IMO, of course.
JesseDegenerate 3 years ago
Is it true? About ticket office in Hull?
The fact Dave didn't attend funeral is just one more evidence that, even if he really is a great artist, he doesn't know about such things as "friends" and "gratitude". From the other side, perhaps his absence was for the better -- there were only those who REALLY loved and missed Mick.
ronnola 4 years ago
you all got this a bit twisted.bowie has 354 million fortune but the arrangements and guitar work\solos made the man his fame.before Ronson he was a struggling folk artist. Two years after he sacked Ronson the guy was working in a ticket office in Hull.He obviously got ripped off and Bowie knew this so he did not even attend his funeral. Please stop making your heros into gods!!!
CHIRPYCHALLONER 4 years ago
i'm not making Bowie into a saint, but it's annoying to hear people complain about him just because he went on to bigger success and fame unlike Ronson, who was great, but didn't cut it in the end. It's not like Bowie deliberately went out of his way to harm Ronson's career. They had a parting of ways, and Bowie wasn't content to play the same old he was playing so he cut off Ronson and the others. the albums are under the name Bowie, not bowie and ronson, nor any other name.
