The game changer. When Sony entered the video game market with it's R U (red) e campaign I wasn't really sure what to expect. My friends and I were all Sega fanboys and owned Saturns (and sega cd's 32X etc) so it was only when we went to a weekend long party that we got to sit down with a rented PSX and a few games. Within minutes we were all crushed at realizing the PS was going to be the future and we had invested in the wrong system. None us said anything, but we all made the switch ASAP.

I have exactly the same model! (9002) It boots faster than the old one and its a little bit quiter...I love to play spyro or crash bandicoot from time to time on an actual console...emulators are not the same!

I dont like that model of PSX, there is the cartridge slot removed in back of playstation. It was very fun to build own codes like rapid fire or anything with Exploder connected to PC.

Oh god, this is DEFINITELY the best TV console of the 90's. Games were made all the way to 2006, 2 generations later. Aswell as that, at least 50% of all games made for the PS1 were exceptional: Tomb Raider Trilogy, F1 95-01, Gran Turismo and Gran Turismo 2, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Dino Crisis and many more. The graphics easily outshone the Saturn's and N64s, which looked like a cartoon in comparison.

One of the best consoles ever....period. I'm with roygib09, the PS1 I received in 1998 still works. It probably also has something to do with how well you take care of your consoles (my Genesis from '93 still works just fine), but quality is another factor. The PS1 was built to last...and you can't deny the epic-ness of the startup sound :)

Damned good question... I can think of tons of comparisons for the Playstation when you say Sonic and Mario like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. But non of them really flew the flag for Playstation it was always more of the other way around. Playstation was what came to mind when you mentioned those characters rather than what did you think of when you think hear Playstation.
