Even at age 40, this skit still brings tears of pain and compassion to my eyes. The CTW ought to be ashamed of themselves for even producing a video skit like this to youngsters!!!
Back in the day, when I was still in my single digits of age, after I first saw this skit, it made me cry non-stop for hours!! I was not only feeling sorry for poor Ernie for losing his rubber duckie - albeit temporarily - but also I was simply horrified by the ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE doll Oscar got as a replacement!!
I never got to see Sesame Street in the old days, but I get the feeling it actually used to be clever. Not just an endless tide of characters sounding out words. There used to be real plots to the episodes. For example, Mr. Hooper's death. I've only seen it on YouTube, but that wad real and emotional. I got a little misty eyed to be honest. SS has been dumbed down as far as I can tell.
This must have been one of Oscar's first appearances since he turned green (he was orange in the first season). I remember that godawful doll with the horrid sound. The look of sheer horror on Ernie's face is priceless. I'm certain there wasn't a market for those ugly dolls at the toy stores.
I saw this when it was first run on TV -- I was what, 3 years old? -- in 1971 or so. I laughed so hard, and it's formative in such a way that I still laugh my ass off when I think about that Thing that Oscar brings to Ernie.
That funny sound at 3:20, 3:24 & 4:35 in this clip is similar to the sound you didn't hear very often on The Electric Company, but whenever the cast members like Pandora or The Short Circus Kids either were distracted, or couldn't read the word they saw on the screen, you'd hear that annoying sound, and it spooked me at times when they couldn't read it on time, but most of the time, they read it right. Once, a raspherry sounded, then Auther J. Crank challenged the 3 seconds rule.
Trivia question: I'm thinking of an animated movie that features two characters named Ernie and Oscar. A prize or a surprize to the first person to resond to this and tell what this movie is.
i like how that show promotes values and ideas for kids (like here, for instance, tastes and points of view varying from one people to another) in an entertaining way... Jim Henson was a genius.
Ernie is the man--how many people can claim having Oscar come over and visit them and encourage them at the same time? However, we know that Oscar came over to screw with him.
HAHAHAHAHA omg when ernie squeezes the doll it's hilarious! what kind of doll makes a sound like its a zombie! haha and i agree with manasama 9008! wow..
LMFAO, this is hilarious!! that doll is making the most scariest sound ever!! like a chicken who just got ran over by a truck and is having breathing problems, XDD
1. I never realised how beautiful the green fur of Oscar is! It is so delicious I could eat it!
2. I agree with many of you that this is a wonderful clip about how our perspectives are different and we need to appreciate and accept the inherent difference. It is more of how we feel about things, not how things are!
3. I am going to use the clip for my lesson first thing on Monday moaning in class! Brilliant classics!
I like to think of what it would be like in this skit if instead of his rubber duckie Ernie lost his whoopie cushion and didn't find it until he sat down.
That ugly duck scared the living crap out of me when I was about 4 years old. I suppose I'm over it now... I think. The sound that thing makes still makes my blood run cold.
There was another Sesame Street episode where Oscar was charming (as Prince Charming) because he ate some magical cookies from a storybook (called Prince Charming) just to prove that the cookies were not magical and he wouldn't become Charming as a prince but, he was wrong. After he ate the cookies, he became charming and he thought that Telly was his horse and then Oscar's trash can became a prince's castle.
@afriendofbean Ernie: This was a special and unique Duckie, it was the only Rubber Duckie of it's kind anywhere you can't just go down to the store and buy a Rubber Duckie!!!!
@afriendofbean Ernie: But here I am, still without my Rubber Duckie (squeak!) I think I sat on something, underneath all this stuff here is...my Rubber Duckie, oh Rubber Duckie I missed you so (kisses his duckie)
@muppetlover16 The reason he kissed his duckie was because, he loves his duckie more than anything else and he says he can't stay away from his duckie not even for a minute (he mentioned this on one Sesame Street episode). Of course, he loves Bert too.
He visited them another time, in the sketch where Ernie mashed up a banana, put ice cubes and gravy on it, and told Bert it was chocolate ice cream. When Oscar showed up and saw it, he said, "My second favorite dessert!" and offered to swamp some real ice cream for it.
It seems like Bert could have very easily been in this skit. It almost seems as if Oscar was a last minute replacement for Bert since Frank Oz wasn't available at the time they taped this.
I think Oscar was a good fit for the skit, since the lesson was that different people have different likes and dislikes. Plus, Bert was more into bottle caps and Pigeons! I wonder if that stuffed animal of Oscar's still exists somewhere in the CTW.
Ugly things aren't necessarily not cute. Some things are so ugly they're cute, such as pekineses.
