  • Ugly things aren't necessarily not cute. Some things are so ugly they're cute, such as pekineses.

  • wait- oscar actually left his trash can?

    WHAT IS THIS MADNESS!!!!!!!

  • That is the worst sound that could ever come from a toy!

  • Ernie as I'd never seen him before; same with Oscar.

  • 0_o Oscar is being NICE!?

  • Even at age 40, this skit still brings tears of pain and compassion to my eyes. The CTW ought to be ashamed of themselves for even producing a video skit like this to youngsters!!!

Back in the day, when I was still in my single digits of age, after I first saw this skit, it made me cry non-stop for hours!! I was not only feeling sorry for poor Ernie for losing his rubber duckie - albeit temporarily - but also I was simply horrified by the ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE doll Oscar got as a replacement!!

  • Are you able to upload the rest of the episode that this clip comes from?

  • Of course this story is about facts vs opinions. However, whatever Oscar's faults are, he shows us that he does have a good side.

  • 3:20 It's like a Duck Dying!

  • 4:59 Both of those things are ugly.

  • from early 1971

  • I never got to see Sesame Street in the old days, but I get the feeling it actually used to be clever. Not just an endless tide of characters sounding out words. There used to be real plots to the episodes. For example, Mr. Hooper's death. I've only seen it on YouTube, but that wad real and emotional. I got a little misty eyed to be honest. SS has been dumbed down as far as I can tell.

  • Forty years later, this still makes me laugh.

At four years old, this was formative in my concept of 'humour'.

  • His crying sounds like he's barking like a dog

  • IT'S ONLY A RUBBER DUCKIE?!

    0:44

  • This is one of sweetest you'll ever see Oscar the Grouch act. I'm adding this to my favorites.

  • YES!!! I KNEW I heard that sound somewhere! (The "thing" being squeezed.) THANK you for posting this!!!

  • Where can I get one of those toys?

  • @MrTornado300 I could try sewing one, if you in turn come up with something to make it SOUND like that ^-^

  • I love it when Oscar kisses the rubber thingy at 3:12

Heh, and a bit of improv there at 3:28 when Ernie accidentally drops it on the counter and Oscar gets defensive- "Hey play nice! Watch it there!"

  • I like the sound the toy makes :D

  • "oscar, i've lost my.... rubber duckie"(spazzes and blubbers) hahahahaha

  • Three people never found their own lost duckies.

  • Oscar is being generous!!! About time he gets out of his trash can and helps others. I like the sketch. Thanks for uploading it.

  • Wow. I didn't know Oscar cared so much xD

  • I love Oscar

  • I love Angry Bert and Dramatic Ernie! hahaha!

  • when i was a kid i always told my mum oscar grouch was prity colourfull and cute

  • This must have been one of Oscar's first appearances since he turned green (he was orange in the first season). I remember that godawful doll with the horrid sound. The look of sheer horror on Ernie's face is priceless. I'm certain there wasn't a market for those ugly dolls at the toy stores.

  • @hoffenpot

I believe this sketch is from Season 2 (1970-71).

  • I saw this when it was first run on TV -- I was what, 3 years old? -- in 1971 or so. I laughed so hard, and it's formative in such a way that I still laugh my ass off when I think about that Thing that Oscar brings to Ernie.

And I wanted one SO BAD.

    Still do.

  • PSYCHO ERNNIE!!!

  • usually, oscar is always mean, but this is the first time i ever see him care so much.

  • LOL Oscar gave Ernie a cool rubber duck LOL

  • Comment removed

  • That replacement duck sounded like a cat being sick LMAO :)

  • the "thing" that oscar takes out of a bag sounds like a cat being sick. LMAO :)

  • Haha. What was that thing that Oscar bought? It sounds like it is dying haha!

  • i love the sound the ''replacement ducky'' makes xD

  • how long did Ernie have his rubber duckie for?

  • @1986Sheri since the show started back in 1969 or 1970.

  • @frankd1965 November 1969, that's when it started.

  • Too darn funny! Especially that weird noise Oscar's "duck" made.

  • One time, I had a dream that Ernie's Rubber Duckie had double faces.

  • When I was a kid, I actually liked and wanted one of those toys that Oscar brought.

  • People don't realize but Oscar had had moments of being nice for a grouch

  • daww oscar cares.:) and lol at 0:47

  • that new duck sounds like it was dying o__e

  • D'aww. Poor Ernie. *hugs Ernie* He's so adorable.

  • oscar is sooo sweet i wanna marry him

  • lol poor ernie xD i think HE is the cutest and most adorable thing i've ever seen

and i love oscar too! that dool sounds so creepy

  • I LOVE the sound that "duck" makes. I can't watch this with out laughing.

  • That funny sound at 3:20, 3:24 & 4:35 in this clip is similar to the sound you didn't hear very often on The Electric Company, but whenever the cast members like Pandora or The Short Circus Kids either were distracted, or couldn't read the word they saw on the screen, you'd hear that annoying sound, and it spooked me at times when they couldn't read it on time, but most of the time, they read it right. Once, a raspherry sounded, then Auther J. Crank challenged the 3 seconds rule.
  • i want that orange doll

    that was so great

  • at 0:45 is so funny and i think erine is a little too funny when he cries and the duck oscar bought is just plain creepy

  • omg, that's me when I can't find stuff!

  • only a Rubber Duckie

  • The sound that doll makes should've been in The Grudge cuz gah that sound is so creepy.

  • "That's the ugliest thing I ever saw." AHAHAHAHAAA!!!

  • 3:22 LOL

  • 0:47 =epic sounds! XD

  • 4:35 funny sound

  • oh, that sounds scary!!

  • the sound that thing makes is deeply disturbing..

  • Trivia question: I'm thinking of an animated movie that features two characters named Ernie and Oscar. A prize or a surprize to the first person to resond to this and tell what this movie is.

  • 2:51 "That's the ugliest thing I ever saw."

    3:22 Funny

    5:00 - 5:05 "That is Ugly"

  • I never see Oscar interact with Bert and Ernie.

  • This is probably the first time I have seen Oscar being sympathetic.

  • i like how that show promotes values and ideas for kids (like here, for instance, tastes and points of view varying from one people to another) in an entertaining way... Jim Henson was a genius.

  • @AlexDraco Yeah, but I can't imagine someone other than Oscar actually thinking that the rubber duckie is uglier than what he bought!

  • And thanks for reposting this.

  • It was nice to see that Ernie found his Rubber Duckie lying on the floor, so therefore that made Ernie cheer up.

  • Hahahahaha the sound that doll makes is classic!

  • That doll scared me when I was small; the sound and its appearance! *shudder*

  • Comment removed

  • "Ruber duckies are suposed to make a wonderful sound when you squizzle them..."

    *GRRRRRRR*

    LOL

  • Oscar is doing his job.

  • This might be Oscar's best moment in the Sesame Street series.

  • It's actually very nice - and very uncharacteristic - for Oscar to help someone out without something in it for him.

  • I love how he freaks out. Its so funny.

  • i feel bad for ernie, he really misses his rubber ducky

  • Why is Oscar just roaming around in Ernie and Bert's apartment anyway?

  • I think Sesame Street has a general undeclared trust system.

  • Ernie is the man--how many people can claim having Oscar come over and visit them and encourage them at the same time? However, we know that Oscar came over to screw with him.

  • its okay earnie you will find your rubber ducky

  • I want that plushy! XD

  • lol oscar this is the ugliest thing iv ever seen

  • best. thing. ever.

  • what a demonic stuff PLUS a hideous yell... hahahaha... it made my day... thanks!!!

  • Sesamestreet teaching little kids relativism since almost forever

  • That thing sounds like a demon vomiting!

  • More like a sick lamb.

  • Ernie:I lost my rubber duckie! bawls LOL

  • the first time I saw this, when ernie takes that 'thing' out of the bag, I swear I was laughing soooooo hard I had trouble breathing! :)

  • And another segment where he took Elmo's box.

  • Oscar's not in the trash can. The only other time I remember him not being in it is in the Chocolate Ice Cream segment.

  • well actually he's been out of it other times

  • Holy crap I have never seen Ernie so devistated before! And that...that...THING sounded like some kind of a satan spawn being raped!! XD

    Awesome.

  • Oscar says "Cute and Adorable"

I thought he HATES cute and adorble stuff! :P

  • he does!

  • wow, Ernie is so heartbroken. Poor guy. Um, so Oscar just randomly shows up at Ernie's place?

  • I remember watching this as a kid and feeling very touched that Oscar tried his best to do good for Ernie.

  • that doll sounds like a faulty moose call i hear once! XD

  • Jim Henson and Caroll Spinney...great muppet performers! Classic SS at its best! :)

  • It's very strange how Oscar is being nice because Oscar says that the rule of being a grouch is to never be nice to anyone.

  • also it sounds like a moaning goat in pain haha

  • HAHAHAHAHA omg when ernie squeezes the doll it's hilarious! what kind of doll makes a sound like its a zombie! haha and i agree with manasama 9008! wow..

  • LMFAO, this is hilarious!! that doll is making the most scariest sound ever!! like a chicken who just got ran over by a truck and is having breathing problems, XDD

  • Good clip! The rubber duckie looks like the devil! ZThe sound at 1:06 would be god for a screamer!

  • The sound coming out of the rubber-duckie-replacement is scary as hell.

  • Is that Fran Brill making that awful sound?

  • 1. I never realised how beautiful the green fur of Oscar is! It is so delicious I could eat it!

    2. I agree with many of you that this is a wonderful clip about how our perspectives are different and we need to appreciate and accept the inherent difference. It is more of how we feel about things, not how things are!

    3. I am going to use the clip for my lesson first thing on Monday moaning in class! Brilliant classics!

  • AHH!! Never call a Grouch Beautiful. LOL. You Can Call The Grouch Slime Green. LOL

  • this show as as good as it gets.. all this for a lesson on perspective... what a great trip down memory lane !! Thanx Hugic !!!!

  • I always thought it sounded like it was crying because Ernie didn't like it. I didn't it was THAT ugly!

  • I like to think of what it would be like in this skit if instead of his rubber duckie Ernie lost his whoopie cushion and didn't find it until he sat down.

  • What a funny and cool idea!

  • Agree - My favorite Sesame Street skit next to Goin for A Ride and Mahna Mahna. Thanks for posting this again!

  • That ugly duck scared the living crap out of me when I was about 4 years old. I suppose I'm over it now... I think. The sound that thing makes still makes my blood run cold.

  • GAH! This was the clip I was trying so hard to find when I was making Schadenfreude! Oh well, glad it's back up. Thanks for posting!

  • The way Ernie cries in this was hilarious.

  • And the only time that Oscar done somthing very nice without complianing about the grouch laws

  • There was another Sesame Street episode where Oscar was charming (as Prince Charming) because he ate some magical cookies from a storybook (called Prince Charming) just to prove that the cookies were not magical and he wouldn't become Charming as a prince but, he was wrong. After he ate the cookies, he became charming and he thought that Telly was his horse and then Oscar's trash can became a prince's castle.

  • @afriendofbean Ernie: This was a special and unique Duckie, it was the only Rubber Duckie of it's kind anywhere you can't just go down to the store and buy a Rubber Duckie!!!!

  • @afriendofbean Ernie: But here I am, still without my Rubber Duckie (squeak!) I think I sat on something, underneath all this stuff here is...my Rubber Duckie, oh Rubber Duckie I missed you so (kisses his duckie)

  • @muppetlover16 The reason he kissed his duckie was because, he loves his duckie more than anything else and he says he can't stay away from his duckie not even for a minute (he mentioned this on one Sesame Street episode). Of course, he loves Bert too.

  • He visited them another time, in the sketch where Ernie mashed up a banana, put ice cubes and gravy on it, and told Bert it was chocolate ice cream. When Oscar showed up and saw it, he said, "My second favorite dessert!" and offered to swamp some real ice cream for it.

  • I saw this skit. It was funny.

  • Lol at 1:06!

  • Yeah, I'm with you on that one.

  • somone even said try play 1:06 over again. LOL!

  • I love this one. I love the noise Oscar's toy makes. It even has Ernie's hair.

  • right on! hopefully this won't get pulled again!

  • It's the rubber duckie from hell

  • It seems like Bert could have very easily been in this skit. It almost seems as if Oscar was a last minute replacement for Bert since Frank Oz wasn't available at the time they taped this.

  • I wouldn't exactly say that. But I do think Oscar is acting pretty out of character in this skit.

  • I think Oscar was a good fit for the skit, since the lesson was that different people have different likes and dislikes. Plus, Bert was more into bottle caps and Pigeons! I wonder if that stuffed animal of Oscar's still exists somewhere in the CTW.

  • Great to have this back.
