so anyone wanna answer this question? latly when im bowling my ring and middle finger are hurting at the first join after my release. what am i doing wrong?
@MegaKingzilla You may want to check your span. Your span may be too long. If that is not it - see a doctor. Could be something you need to be aware of.
@MegaKingzilla could just be how your holding or gripping the ball, i doubt its anything of major concern, give it awhile longer? see if it stops, when i had my 1st custom drilled ball that wasnt 2nd hand, the span was right, but it felt weird and it did hurt abit but eventually it stopped and yeh.
@jmorris214 It will depend on the condition you are on. Most would recommend something matte finish and fairly high reactive for most typical house shots. Depending on speed would determine pin up or pin down. We have seen many do very well with this Defiant or the DV8 Hell Raiser Revenge.
@Nelvin78 Tony's benchmark layout is this pin down layout. With his style and being around the side of the ball, putting the pin down gives the ball a nice continuous reaction. Any weight holes used in the videos are mostly just to get the ball back to legal by USBC rules.
I'm thinking about getting this for next year. I'm a sophomore and I average 180 but during sectionals my ball was just sliding. I couldn't hit much. I'm hoping this could help me improve for next season!
What ball would be best for me? I throw a 14lb, throw about 14.5mph and im a tweener. I currently have a 2furious, a primal impulse and an ebonite magic.
I have a question for Tony, comparing the nexus solid and the defiant which ball do u think hooks more and which is gonna be more forgiving on a typical house shot??
@stelly351 Both balls are very strong overall. After I watched the videos again it sparked my memory of the Nexus and I remember the Nexus Solid being strong much smooth. It was possibly the strongest ball I ahve thrown that did not involve a sharp change in motion.
The Defiant really changes motion harder. Depending on the lane condition I think you will see more back end with the Defiant and a smoother overall motion with the Nexus Solid.
what you guys are saying is that mika isnt good because he lofts? get outta here. the lanes for his rev rate was probably dry enough to loft for him to get the ball further down the lane before it hooked and show u how much the ball would move. its a monkey see / monkey do type thing. people watch these videos just to see how much the a ball hooks. which is pathetic. end of story and i bet that guy that is lofting could kick most of your asses on kegel house or sport shot.
@kingzmaul I was most people who loft only loft because they have way too much grip pressure. In Mike's case, it turned out to be that he needed to loft the gutter. That is very rare. You won't see most people that loft every shot doing very well as grip pressure is the enemy of shot making. I talked to mike about it earlier in the comments section of this video and he explained very intelligently why he had to loft. I only try to help!
@gamemeister27 lofting the gutter isnt rare if your at a professional tournament in match play. mike fagan, belmo, osku, robert smith, and much more. these are some of the pros on tour who do that stuff. thats only the people that are known. im sure theres alot of people who arent on tv or on tour that we dont know about who loft just has much as he does when the lanes dry out. its only a matter of when is the right time to use it. its a very talented skill.
Only people with poor habits are going to loft as much as Curlie and Mike. Take this a little more seriously guys, Keep Tony and get 2 other guys (or maybe a girl in there) that can throw a decent shot. We cant gauge how our ball might roll or act with those 2 clowns.
@itellithowitis300 Chris Barnes rev rate, according to Kegel stats, is right around 420 rpm. Mike's normal rev rate is about 580 with the ability to go higher or lower if needed. In this video Mike was probably lower than his normal rev rate due to both conditions and the extremely aggressive ball. I would probably guess his rev rate in this set of videos was around 550.
@igetamercedes LOL Brian a cranker, not. Try a spinner. His PAP was 4 over. Sounds like a spinner to me. The ball hooked a lot because of today's lane conditions and equipment.
@Keithfung3g The main reason for that was because I had to stay so up the back of the ball. With where Tony and Curlie played, I was battling where they had already broken down. If I cam around the ball at all it either took off and came up high or I left a lot of 9 pins. By staying more up the back, it helped to keep the ball from overreacting through the nose. There was still quite a bit of continuation on most of the shots and this ball did not deflect much at all.
I think I may want to get then ball and put it at 4000 abralon. I do yave a request bowlingballcom staff. cant you get a back few of mike jones so i can see his approach? It will help me learn his approach, hand positon from behind and so on. It would be very much appreciated.
@dragnet53 It is perfectly legal to loft the ball. If it weren't then Mika wouldn't be allowed on tour. People use loft to get the ball to clear the heads and keep the ball from "rolling out." This ball was much stronger than I expected with the layout chosen. When I was sitting the ball down at the line, it was rolling before the end of the pattern. By lofting the ball out on to the lane, you get more length and a stronger backend motion. It takes consistency to hit the same mark tho
@TheMikejonesbbcom Tell people to watch the title match from the 2007 CLR Windy City Classic. Robert Smith is teaching, "The Ball Can't Hook in the Air 101."
@gamemeister27 That is why he is my favorite bowler. I still watch him online bowling in Asia. Much tougher conditions over there and he is still playing his game.
I wanted this ball until I found out that it was a non-polished ball. I cant stand the sanded textured type balls. For me they are hard to control for some odd reason.
I can't help being a newb at this stuff. I am still trying to find the perfect setting for me and I am about to be on my third ball within 6 months. I wish I can just take back the same ball with my insurance on it. lol
oh damn, this is crazy. 38 feet seems to be way too short for this ball. easily one of the strongest-hooking balls, ever, and the strongest i've seen yet. badass stuff.
Thank you for adding the cranker bowler to the videos! I can finally watch these videos to compare to my shot! Excellent job Mike! I look forward to watching you throw the balls that will be coming out in the future.
Very very Impressive. I love watching Curlie bowl. One for us older harder working people that spent most of our life working. That is how I see Curlie. And now he loves to bowl and he is kicking butt and taking names. Tony is just unbelievable, so smooth yet a great rev rate. Bet he could bowl anywhere. The new guy Mike just makes me sore watching him bowl. To be young again. Mike has mucho revs and power. Great video. The ball looks great.
It is good to finally be in the videos! Let me just say that this is the biggest hooking ball I have ever thrown. Hence why I am lofting it so much. Pin up and it was still hooking too much for me on this shot. May add some Xtra Shine to it and throw it again just to have another review on it. Out of the box this thing flat hooks though.
That's not a cranker, that's a shot putter. How does he manage a 225 average in league with that much grip pressure!? If I threw it like that, I would average more like 145. Can he get with a coach and work on not lofting the ball a million feet out onto the lane and smoothing out his approach in general? He could probably get his average up ten pins if he did that, and he would be more useful in your videos.
@gamemeister27 The Defiant is a very aggressive and strong rolling ball. In order for Mike to get it to not hook in his hand, he had to loft it between 8-10 feet on to the lane. Being a former collegiate bowler, he is pretty used to doing this. On a typical House shot you will generally see him sitting the ball down much earlier, but with pin to pap distances closer to 6 inches and more polished equipment.
@BowlVersity That makes much more sense. I was so confused by the combination of crazy loft and high average. Good to know! Most people you see doing that are trying to crush the life out of the bowling ball with their hand, not trying to clear the front because they have such a high rev rate. The later is quite rare, so you understand my surprise.
@gamemeister27 It really is rare. My grip pressure usually isn't really high either. I have literally no calluses on my hand and I don't use protection tape or new skin. @TheMikejonesbbcom Oh....5 1/4 inch pin to PaP...that explains why someone with your delivery has to loft the gutter. Can't get away with a pin that strong on an asymmetric hook monster!
@gamemeister27 Odd thing is that he used to lay the ball down at the line. After some sessions at the Kegel Training Center he came back getting the ball out on the lane. To quote Mark Roth and later Rob Smith, "the ball won't hook in the air". He absolutely tears up the lanes regardless of the condition.
@bowlingballcom This ball is absolutely AMAZING!!! I just picked one up about a week ago, and I drilled it a basic 4X5 and left the surface alone. I would move, and move, and keep moving...but couldn't even come close to the pocket on a THS. This ball flat hooks!!! It is going to be a contender this year, and on patterns like the Cheetah, etc. anyone can have confidence in this ball coming back! Thanks Storm/Roto! AMAZING!
@bowlingballcom r u guys gunna have more videos with mike jones? i throw my ball very similar to him so it was nice to c what kind of reaction i could get out of this ball.. also i was wondering if u knew what his mph is? i seen it said medium i was just curious bc i throw more around like 18 mph.. thanks
Been waiting for this video. This ball looks mean. The Defiant has new coverstock MicroBite technology. Like that of the Virtual Gravity Nano. And you have a pure power player now too. Tony has some rev's but Mike is just ridiculous!
@plamormick Yes the lane level camera has been giving us some issues. We may bring out a new camera for the next video to see how it works. We did the layouts for Tony and Mike to show the difference between pin over and pin under with the same pin to pap distance. Mike typically uses 6" pin to pap on most of his asymmetric equipment putting the pin more over the middle finger and getting more length. This was the first video using new oil and the backends were much much crisper.

I have 4 questions I need answered
On the market right now we have the nexus solid , the defiant, and hellraiser revnge for balls that are super aggressive.............
1. out of those 3 which has the most overall hook??
2. out of those 3 which has most length??
3. which has the least length??
4. which is the most versatile ( most useable )?? (i.e. fresh oil to breakdown, slick to dry etc..)
I am planning to make new purchases very soon so these answers will be very help
