South Korea's response (or lack thereof) to Kim Jong Il's atrocities are a direct product of the Left's demands for appeasement. It doesn't mean the country itself or a majority of its people are "cowards"; it just means the Left is willfully blinding itself to reality.
Also keep in mind: North Korea has chemical and nuclear weapons, and has massive artillery along the border pointed at Seoul. A war with the north could go very badly if not executed with maximum efficiency and planning (i.e. liberate the north and defeat the KPA *before* the regime has time to respond.)
North Korea isn't going to attack the South, and vice versa. If the DPRK attacks, it spells the end of the dictatorship regime and everything they worked so hard to build. If the ROK attacks, their economy would be in ruins, and its one of the strongest economies in East Asia, after Japan and China. Both have something to lose in a war. And imagine the international reaction!

You're right it wasn't an ideal victory, but Kim Il Sung failed in his goal of taking over the south and forcibly reunifying the country under Communism. The fight is far from over though. We should've liberated the north while we had the chance in 1950.
It's pretty much a tie, with a narrow victory towards S. Korea because it's a prosperous country, and N. Korea is dead broke.
However, the Communist side broke the invincibility myth of the mighty U.S. military juggernaut. Only person to blame was the over-confident MacArthur who repeated ignored warnings from his subordinates about Chinese intervention in Korea.

Also keep in mind: North Korea has chemical and nuclear weapons, and has massive artillery along the border pointed at Seoul. A war with the north could go very badly if not executed with maximum efficiency and planning (i.e. liberate the north and defeat the KPA *before* the regime has time to respond.)

North Korea isn't going to attack the South, and vice versa. If the DPRK attacks, it spells the end of the dictatorship regime and everything they worked so hard to build. If the ROK attacks, their economy would be in ruins, and its one of the strongest economies in East Asia, after Japan and China. Both have something to lose in a war. We have a divided Korea for as long as the eye can see, and if you look closely for what N. Korea stands for, it is the imposition of socialism and restoration of Stalinism on the Korean peninsula. Anyone who counts this as a major foreign policy breakthrough for S. Korea hasn't got a clue.

However, the Communist side broke the invincibility myth of the mighty U.S. military juggernaut. Only person to blame was the over-confident MacArthur who repeated ignored warnings from his subordinates about Chinese intervention in Korea.

Its clear from the number of people risking their lives to leave the country (300,000 N. koreans are living essentially underground in China and 20,000+ have defected to the south) that a significant number of people oppose the regime.
