First time I saw this episode, when I heard the words "just tell me what happened from the beginning," I honestly thought they had Alan Rickman as a guest star, since it was in silouhette and from a distance and you can't see his face. Either way you look at it, though, his voice is amazing.
He sounds so much like Alan Rickman at the beginning o.O...here I was lamenting the fact that there would never be as sexy a voice, but now i've found one almost identical!? happy days :D
I'm curious why it is he's travel all the way to Minsk for what is very clearly 'an open and closed domestic' but later he won't even leave the flat for what he calls 'a seven'. Surely this case can't have sounded like more than a five at the time, no?

I had an argument with my teacher about the whole hung/hanged thing....He was trying to convince us that if a person is going to be hanged it is hung, which of course it isn't. In the end, after about 10 minutes of me arguing with him he went to his laptop and looked it up. Clear as day on the overhead projector was "hanged"...Never felt better
@ejeevika If something is 'hung' then it's hung on a peg, 'hanged' is a past tense of 'to hang' used specifically for 'hanging someone by the neck until they're dead' sort of thing :) hope that makes more sense! xx
Actually, I do believe Sherlock's just trying to rile the guy up by correcting his grammar. Sort of to see if he's given to violent explosions if annoyed or angry and obviously he is. So I'd say this was Sherlock's way of verifying his theory and solving the 'case'. I mean you don't see him constantly correcting other people's grammar so it makes sense to say it's a specialty for the occasion/means to an end..?

Holmes didn't know that the Earth revolved around the Sun simply because it wasn't useful to him as a detective. It's similarly unlikely grammar would be useful to him if only to piss the guy off.
I'm a bit curious as to why the English to German translation has received so much attention here. Yes, perhaps there was diversity in the translation -and why that is a big deal escapes me, quite honestly. Regardless, I like this scene. It's exciting.
@pavelthe2 In English that guy might just be speaking a regional variety of English (like for ex. in/around Newcastle where you hear things like 'but that's how he was, like' in everyday speech but not in London for ex.) or is supposed to be from some lower social class as Sherlock. It's a joke around those lines. In German that guy uses perfectly normal everyday speech even academics use (for ex.) apart from one instance as far as I can remember (been a while since I watched it)
@pavelthe2 and Sherlock is correcting that, coming across as a bit old-fashioned in those moments or very elite-like and it therefore reflects more on Sherlock's character than on that guy (as it does in the English version). Rest assured the German version had me cringe several times, not only here, but then in the English Blind Banker episode the German got messed up, so it equals out in the end. :o) [sorry for length, linguist/translator from Germany but living in England; can't shut up] :o)
The Great Game has to be the best television episode I have ever seen - truly, amazing, so well contsructed, and I love this! The way it starts! It's amazing how Sherlock manages to be so funny while still always being dramatic, end never seeming cheap
As Sherlock I can't stand people who don't use proper grammar. Of course the english grammar is rather hard to learn for some (I'm not a native speaker, either) but it just drives me crazy. I consider myself a grammar nazi, too (which sounds quite odd since I am from Germany...) and I know people find that annoying but I can't help it.
Did they make him look and talk like Snape on purpose? I mean, this stressed "just", and the whole first sentence doesn't really sound like Sherlock. And this sillhouette... they probably wanted everyone to realize how similar their voices are :D

It was already established in the bit of previous dialogue that Sherlock is a Grammar Nazi, so they opted (rather than translating it wrong) to simply replace one joke with another, and they didn't ruin it by doing that. If anything, they made it more plausible; you actually WILL get shot rather than hanged in Belarus. In the back of your head, no less. Sherlock, being who he is, of course, had to share his knowledge. :)

But what would you make of it in German instead of "werde ich gehängt"? I can't really think of anything close that's not a completely made-up word. So the next best thing was to just change it a bit and after some grammar lesson give that guy a lesson on the Belorussian justice system as well. I thought the script for the dubbing was rather brilliant actually

Had his "if" statement been a way to suggest that a situation was unclear (e.g. "If I was rude, I apologize"), then "was" would've been correct. I hope that makes sense. xD

If you're referring to people, they are hanged.
Objects, like posters and pictures, are hung.

@carzura - Benedict Cumberbatch is infamous for doing Alan Rickman impressions to amuse his friends. ;) You'll find some of them on YouTube... He even does it on the Sherlock DVD commentary!

@joiraida Its funny because I had an instant suspicion when I saw this scene and heard the voice that Alan Rickman was to be Moriarty. I thought that would be great

@Hanna9469 "hung" hat die Bedeutung, dass man etwas aufhängt (einen Mantel z.B.). "hanged" heißt jemanden erhängen. Das Macht in diesem Kontext also schon einen deutlichen Unterschied. =)
