Polygon is the name of the shape its a catch all. Poly is Greek for many gon is a shape so many shapes as one shape.

@davidmongiello actually no, gon is nothing. Gonia on the other hand is a corner, or an angle. So a polygon or πολύγωνο (polygono) is "a (shape) that has many angles. Trigono=Triangle has three angles, square=tetragono has four angles, anything with more than 4 angles is a polygon. Actually a square and a triangle may be concidered polygons too, just that the word polygon is usually used for shapes with more than 4 angles.
