Thanks for posting this. It's easy to get lost in Joanna Newsom's voice and epic lyrics that its easy to forgot she's a great composer too. At it's base, the chord progression might seem a little simple, but there is so much going on rhythmically and melodically that it's clear her music is very well crafted (and that's just without singing). She's one of the most talented people making music right now.
I reeeeally love how you let the tension build in the beggining of the video, before you pluck the strings. It's funny because Joanna Newsom seems to do the same thing for this song, and Sprout And The bean.
I've watched a couple of your Joanna covers the past few days, and I think this might be my favorite. You're a fantastic harpist. You ever write your own music?
@boltlikeahorse I could never do that!!!! It'd be so scary :/ Also I bet loads of people who go to her shows can play the harp so I'd feel like a total show-off :P x
Can you tell me sort of what verses you played, skipped, etc? Trying to learn this, and maybe you edited some? Can't tell you how much i love your playing!
@UnzipYerReligion I basically just played each repeat only once instead of repeating - hopefully you'll know what I mean if you've downloaded the sheet music?

@u1008394 Be careful with cramping! Make sure to take plenty of B vitamins and drink ample water. Cramping in the forearm or hand while playing any instrument can be a precursor to a RSI(Repetitive Strain Injury) I did it to myself when learning the guitar, I played constantly and eventually had to stop for 3+ months due to pain and having to heal. I'm better now, not quite as dexterous as I used to be, but I can play again(it's been a year) be careful!!!! Pain=take a break
Hi there, just wanted to say well done with all of your uploads of Joanna covers on the harp. I'm a big Joanna fan, and love singing her songs. It's great to sing along to your videos! You're very talented at playing the harp, I can't imagine how hard you must have worked to play her songs so well. Again, thank and keep up the good work!
Very well played! Not an easy piece by any stretch of the imagination! I don't play the harp, but this sounded pretty good to me. Also, you're cute :)
ok, thanks! I've always wanted to play the harp badly..and now I have enough money to buy one. do you have an suggestions for playing or what model to pick at all? I'd really appreciate it. lovely playing as well :)
umm well I don't really know much about what harp companies there are in America tbh... Id' just suggest going to different harp shops to find out which one sounds nicest to you
I am trying to learn this on the piano but the matching up the dotted eights and regular eights is so hard! You did a fantastic, fantastic job on it :)
The Celtic Harp have been cool from it's borning : )
Maybe the Concert Harp have been under an Academic Shadow so much time but the strings of the harp are more than the concert format.... the folk strings have been always ''cool'' and rich.
Yeah I got it from his website, he's amazing transcribing all her music! I can play pretty much all of her songs but Cosmia is definitely difficult - I'll probably put it up soon but I need to bring a couple of bits in it up to speed first =].
What do you think about 'Have one on Me'? (the album, not the song)

@taigafuzi I really like it now, but I have to admit it did take me quite a while to get into it.

did you begin playing with a lever harp or did you start out with the pedal?
heidijquinter 2 years ago
I had a lever harp for a year or two, but mainly because a concert harp would've been too big for me at that point.
sszreter 2 years ago
Hey, when you first started playing this did your right hand get cramped? I seem to be having that problem ha ha.
u1008394 2 years ago
Yep, I started out playing it pretty slowly and worked my way up with the metronome though =]
sszreter 2 years ago
So the cramping is becoming less of a problem, how long did it take for you to get through the whole thing from the time you started learning it?
u1008394 1 year ago
@u1008394 ummm I don't really remember to be honest... I think about a month maybe less but then I was learning other pieces too.

what kind of harp are you using?
