I remember seeing him in DC back in the 80's and he told the crowd he thought he would never play this song again. I guess it's just too painfull to perform, let alone to listen to. Man, the pain of lost love so deep, it crushes the blood in your heart.
Actually Guys, Dan was astute at the business end of music also. To say this is a definitive or really good version of this song indicates that your ears may be swayed to easily by your heart. This take is a dragging, off key, dirge. You know it when you listen to the original. It is every performers fear, fucking up a great song when you don't feel well, "In the groove", or "feel the spook" as Neil Young describes it.

@baretree298 Sorry, can't agree. Live versions aren't meant to reproduce the studio version, only represent them. I think this one does a wonderful job of communicating the ineffable quality of the emotion in the song, albeit in a less polished ambiance than the studio recording.
Still can't believe your gone, Dan. This song was & sadly still is, the story of my life, no matter how many years pass. Nothing & no one has come about to change it. It burns in my soul as does the memory of seeing you sing so many times, so many years ago, & again, for the last time, 10 yrs. ago. And I thank God, you sang this once again! Couldn't believe it! Did you hear me screaming for it? :)
Fly away my sweet bird. May your spirit soar high in the heavens. Love always. J
I wore out, I don't how many albums of Dan's been a fan since my teens. If I think about it to long he's gone, well don't want to. :( I hope the Lord brings us another one like him.
Dan wrote not for commercial success but to be true to the artist that he was. Icarus Ascending is about just that. I would rather have ten fans who honestly connect with my music as opposed to a thousand that may have been drawn to me through the manufactured music of today. "Theres a reason youre flying this fast and this far let your faith be your strength and your love be your guiding star." We all miss you Dan. You had such an impact on my life. All I can say is thank you.
I remember buying Netherlands on 8 track in 1978. Enjoyed it and checked out his earlier material. The Last Nail preceeded his commercial success, but it has always been my favorite. Incredible songwriter.
Kinda got to know him through his lyrics. In later years, I suspected that he was struggling with his personal relationships....and was not surprised to learn he was getting a divorce.
A shame he fell to cancer. I lost a blood brother to cancer, too. Both of them are missed.
You know what? Dan did leave many footprints on the hearts and souls of millions and the blessing of his illness is that he became aware of how much he meant to so many. He was pure magic and was taken too soon. I am certain he is at a loss as to how to comfort those who mourn him. He cared so much about the earth and gave his all to us. His enchanting music lifted us up so much that if we listen intently to his voice and his music, we can reach out to him in heaven.
That's the line that drilled right through me in a moment of despair years ago and why I chose that username the day that Dan died. I tried to write songs in Dan's style as he was my writing inspiration, but the record companies insisted that this style was not relevant in the 1990's. We were just fortunate to know him in a time when his message and style did not fall on deaf ears. [Continued, 500 charater limitt exceeded...]
Instead of exploring the amazing thing that the human soul is, now the trend is to mask any emotion at all and revel in emotional blindness, I'm afraid. Where is the humanity? Gone, like the sand and the foam...
Poignant comments, Last Nail, all too true about today's musical wasteland. Write for yourself, I'm afraid, is all you can do, as I'm sure you are doing.
I keep holding out for something. If I hadn't heard Dan when I was a young man, I might have kept listening to a lot of nonsense too. I'm just glad I found him and a lot of like-minded folks that also appreciate the depth and breadth of the man's work.
@gregmpalumbo Because it's all about the all mighty dollar anymore Greg. Dan wrote from the depths of his soul, he wasn't in it for the money. He was told his double album The Innocent Age was a bad idea, but it was something he needed to do. It went double platinum. I'll always believe Dan's success had to do with not only his talent, but his soul was pure and he knew what was important. If you listen to his words you'll know his faith was very strong.
Deep within the recesses of our sub-conscious thought processes lay explanations of the emotions we feel on a daily basis. I'll be forever attempting to figure out how Dan Fogelberg forged a path to these feelings and found a way to put words and music to the tapestry that becomes our lives. This is one of my favorite Fogelberg songs for two reasons; one, it was one of the first wooden guitar songs I learned to play, and two.. well..if I have to explain it, it wont work.
I rembered this morning that a long time ago, I was 14 years old then ( I'm 45 now ), that I made a sort of tapestry ( I do not now if the word is correct, because I'm dutch ) with Dan his face sewed on it from pieces of quilt. I used his own picture that was on his album Home Free if I'm not mistaken. I just found it on the attic, and I had to cry also. I not only saw something from long long ago, but I also saw the feelings of a young girl that had found comfort in the music of Dan.
It is still hard to believe he passed. Jeanne has been kind enough to update some photos on Dan's website...there is a great photo and explanation of Dan ice skating (after his dx and treatment). He looks really great in it..even though he was weakened. Take a look. Greg
Dan, you left your footprints on the hearts and souls of many.!! Gotta luv Captured Angel! If you don't have this in your collection,Get It! Dan did not produce any singles from Capture Angel, the album charted out #23 on Billboard in 1975. It's gone Platinum in sales. Love this song, but my favorite from Captured Angel is Below the Surface.
These Days, Man In The Mirror and this song summarized my years as a teenager back in Ohio. On the heels of Souvenirs and prior to Nether Lands -- Wow!!
How fortunate were we, those of us who got to wear these albums out on our turntables!!
Thank you so much for posting this amazing performance. I miss him so much! I followed his career from the early 70's.
I can't explain why this song (as well as the entire Netherlands and Innocent Age albums) haunts me over the years - it truly creeps into your soul and stays there, with its sweeping passion, melodies, and blistering guitar - pain as exquisite beauty.
omg. The Last Nail was the first song I learned to play on the guitar. I drove my family crazy listening to it over & over. These words and music blend beauty found only in sadness. Thanks so much for the post, I didn't know anybody loved this song like me. bye Dan...thanks for your music.
what city did this show take place in?? Who is Dan playing with? Also, wonder where the original film is? This was a 3/4 camera shoot and professionally done..I would love to get the original concert footage. Maybe Sony has and will release??
thanks for posting this video. now those that may not be as familiar with dans songs as we, can see why we miss him. great song and performance. thanks again.
Oh my God!! I am sooooo happy you posted this video!!! This is my all time favorite Dan song and never heard it live except when he performed in my town a few years back. It brings me to tears everytime and now even more so, now that he is gone. I miss him like he was a family member because I grew up with his music and he got me through those troubled "teen years". Thanks Dan! You are soooo loved!!
Thank you so much for posting this very rare glimpse of one of the most talented singer/songwriter/musicians of our time performing live. It's such a treasure (find) when these videos are posted. If you have any more, pls consider posting them and thank you in advance.
Dan's voice was so strong back in the good ol' days! What a great guitarist as well. You know I posted a performance of this acoustically but I don't know if I can keep it up after seeing this! Miss you much Danny F!
Back when people (musicians and fans alike) cared about EXCELLENCE in music, not some circus and bread entertainment charade. RIP Dan, we miss you.
