It is a blessing to us all to be able to witness the raw energy of this man depicted at the end of the clip. Howlin wolf teaches us to be better people.
wolf was one of the greatest slide players ever and that wasnt even his strong suit. amazing!!! and son house was a great legend but was an alcholic which most great blues legends were back then, but the music from back them move me more than the music do today because back then it was real!!!!
You're missing the performance. A rare intimate version (slower) of one of his best. Looks like a rent party atmosphere. Really cool to feel a part of it all! Thanks!!!!!
You are all missing the point. This is some of the best slide guitar ever recorded, by a man who was almost never recorded playing the guitar, usually preferring to hire lesser, but still excellent, guitarists for his sessions, and live shows.
@counterlucid well think he means back then he was 2nd ranked nobody cared that much about there music back then , more about howlin wolf etc. but now theyre all dead and there all alive there it.
Most of the credit for the "Son House" style should be given to Willie Brown, who did sell records and did have an influence on other bluesmen (he is mentioned my name by Robert Johnson). Any scholarly approach requires a serious consideration of sources, and sadly we simply don't have Son House as a source. People like Charley Patton, Tommy Johnson, and Willie Brown, however are well attested, we know how many records they sold and there is no room for fanciful speculation.
@Croidler What do you mean? Nobody can take credit for Son House's voice or his preacher like delivery and phrasing. The emotion of his voice and his passion was more important an influence than his guitar playing, even if that was important too. And you should know that Son House's influence wasn't by record sales. Howlin Wolf knew Son House and so did Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. They heard him play in person. He's not a source, his music is a MAIN source of all the blues that followed him
@Odin029 You're missing the point, we don't really know what he sounded like in the 20's and 30's, indeed his most popular recordings were made in the 1960's. I don't deny that he was a great personal influence on many great people (though most scholars believe the connexion to Robert Johnson was fleeting at best). I would have to hear some proof to believe anything you're saying, there are many fine scholarly books you can find, and few of them agree with you. Listen to Willie Brown
@Croidler Oh now I understand. Well I would direct you to My Black Mama parts 1 and 2. Even through the pops and hisses it sounds like he's trying to set your speaker on fire. And also to the field recordings he did with Alan Lomax in the early 40's. I shlouldn't leave out his first recording of Preachin Blues where his guitar technique is on display and his voice is as raw and powerful as any ever recorded.
@Odin029 I want to be clear that I am not attacking your right to like Son House, but that the style he's famous for was well established by the time he came around, and that he's a non-source for any academic trying to sort this out. I know the recordings you mention, I find them difficult to listen to, and some stayed unissued until very recently. Like Robert Johnson, most of his influence is on rock musicians, and I speculate the blues would have developed more or less the same without them
@Croidler Why are the mythic sources of a style more important than enjoying the best practitioners of that style? I've heard Willie Brown, and Son House was superior at that time. Better voice more dexterous player and more passion on recordings. He was the best delta blues man of his era and other musicians gravitated towards him. That makes sense. He was the king. Muddy Waters Howlin Wolf and others cited Son House by name when asked who they listened to come up. The facts don't lie at all
@ShamefulBoner Son House was one of the true legends of Delta blues, but any comparison between his earlier work and his recordings in the 60's make the effect of his alcohol abuse apparent. He suffered from alcohol induced tremors when rediscovered and had to be taught how to play his own songs again by Alan Wilson from Canned Heat. He stumbles around embarrassingly throughout this film, and makes one very poor performance. It's surely to these things that Wolf is referring.

Made me cry. How can someone be so passionate about what he's doing?
He shouts and sweats and he looks so happy, although he's playing blues.

The truth is hard and it hurts.
But only someone like Howlin Wolf should say what he did to Son House. Someone who had come from the same places, and knew the story.
I don't think Howlin Wolf said it carelessly either.
