  • the way i learned was one bass note not alternating ( /watch?v=Oxf9DrpGVl0&feature=related the way this guy does it ) but you can hear that they way he plays it sounds more like the song.. it sounds like he doesn't alternate during the chorus but i hear the 3rd string being used and then i hear the alteration in the verse but no 3rd string which kinda makes it hard to learn... btw if anyone can tell me where to do those little hammer ons to dress it up too that'd be great!

  • @stevebanana223 how long did it take you

  • thank you! i can play the whole thing now

  • Awesome thanks :)

You have an amazing voice by the way, you sound just like DCFC!

  • damn your good at singing!

  • what are the chords?????????

  • @embur33 Am, C, F, C Am

  • you sound almost like him! haha

  • the thing on ur guitar that pushes the strings, wats it called? :3

  • @TopGunTommay

    it's a capo.

You can buy it on every music store.

  • Eric clapton is great but all his shit is a bunch of scales and power chords and his most popular song wasn't even written by him???I believe theirs another guitarist by the name of Jimmy Page, And he's a hell of a lot better then Eric when you actually look at the chords , and solos....and no capos!!!

  • @TheApplescout Hmm, makes sense. But what about John Butler? The song he wrote, Ocean, uses a capo

  • True but that just means that they're pusses ... although I have resect for them they still can't play a C,G,D without one

  • @TheApplescout Hmm. I don't know enough to tell you, but I would THINK that the man who is considered to be THE best guitar player in the world ever, would be able to do, y'know, anything. What do I know, though? I taught myself guitar using youtube, lol.

  • I need the correct tabs for this. Ultimate Guitar doesnt seem to be correct. Does anyone know a site with the correct tabs?

  • wow people act like this song is hard or something ... capos are for pussys

  • @TheApplescout I think you're a dick, but I up voted you anyway because cappos 'are' for pussies. This song is still amazing though.

  • @indiefan23 uuummm thanks ...this song kicks ass but once again capos are for pussies that can't play guitar

  • @TheApplescout Uhm actually John Butler uses a capo, and so does Eric Clapton... So...

  • @TheApplescout Lol all a capo does is change the pitch..

  • The only thing missing is the progressive bass note during the chorus and intro.

  • hii:D can you send me the chords to this song pleasee?(: i got most of it down i just need to make sure.. i like the way you do it

    thank youuu(:

  • uuuummm it would have been the best tutorial video if it taught the right hand pattern during the verse.... but great though

  • It's very Blackbirdesque

  • @Gright no

  • Hey Cougarman8 do you hit the bass note in between when you pick the second and the third string?

  • This was really helpful. Thank you good sir.

  • super clean dude

  • Super helpful, thanks.

  • Just go to Idols :D

  • You sing awesomly. o.o

  • You sing and play beautifully.

  • Comment removed

  • This is beautiful!!! thanks!

by the way how do you play the C/B chord?

  • nice cover. u should put up a tutorial...

  • u have really good vocals dude!

  • haha u kinda sing like ben too.. xD thanks!!!!!

  • Finally, someone actually broke down the scratch/pick rhythm for me. I could hear it and see the strumming, but never actually HEARD the "scratch, pick, scratch pick" rhythm by itself. Thanks for clearing that up for me. It's so simple I feel like a dumb ass now, but I've got it.

  • How do you avoid hurting your fingers (mainly the cuticle) when you play it so percussively? I am finding that I'm tearing mine up.. Help please!!

  • The guitar is great, you have it really clean. A little more of a lesson would be nice though,

  • u called this a lesson?

  • I agree with everyone here, you nailed it! thanks for the demo =D

  • hahaha light voice: "i will follow you into the dark" deep voice: "and then" ahaahah awesome bro

  • you have a good voice

  • I barely learned anything. I only get that theres a scratchy sound and you hit the base notes (which are A and E) :/ but ur brilll at playing it...

    thats all i learned :/

  • This is an awesome demonstration. Thanx 4 the great upload!

  • omfg...It's not just your guitar-playing which is awesome...your voice is amazing!!

  • you have an amazing voice and play beautifuly ! :))

  • What are the cords you're playin whike the cappo's on the 5th?

  • beautiful. thank you.

  • i love you.

  • You're voice is beautiful.

I'd like to pull am Ursula from The Little Mermaid and take it for my self C:

...although never mind because a man voice wouldn't fit me well...

    lol

But anyways. Your voice is perfect.

    C:

  • gosh you sing this so well! im impressed

  • YOU'RE AMAZING!

  • holy shit, you got skills man, it will take me a lot of time to learn how to play like that

  • <3 nice

  • do you have a tab for this?

  • haha you really asked someone to marry you over the internet

  • in my dreams I could play this...

  • Awesome!

  • can i play this song without the capo?

  • @pzoaiqbgt

Yes, you will need to either use bar chords for everything, or you will want to just play it lower.

If you have the materials, a makeshift capo is easy to manufacture and use. you will need a pencil and a rubber band (or many rubber bands). Place the pencil over the fret you would capo, then drop the band over the top and pull it down over the bottom, then twist it and pull it back over the top if you have the slack. Tighten them until you have the fret locked.

    Good luck.

  • @kantywanty thank you! but do you know what fret it is if i play it lower? the capo goes on the 5th.

  • @pzoaiqbgt I am not sure if I understand your question, but if you just want to play it without the capo, and do not want to use bar chords, then you can just play the same chords relative to the nut. This will cause everything to be a lower note by 2 and 1/2 steps, but it will sound pretty much the same. The problem with doing that, though, is if you are singing with it; your voice will have to drop to match your guitar's drop.

  • @kantywanty ohh ok thanks

that was a lot of help

  • @pzoaiqbgt actually it goes on the 4th

  • Awesome playing : )

  • thanks for the tutorial!

  • I HAVE THE SAME GUITAR

  • check my page for an acoustic cover of this song :) happy to help how to play it too

  • Youu hav an awsome voice(: !!!

  • wow i looked for that frekin strumming pattern everywhere except here. thanks much dude ima put my own cover version on here now

  • I can't see, what's making the scraping noise? is it your two fingers as they're strumming, or is it something with your thumb?

  • @damaband41 use your fingernails to scrap the strings and don't play notes.. don't use ur thumb..

  • beautiful. makes me wish i could play guitar.

  • You have an amazing voice!

  • What are the chords?

  • Thanks a lot!! Just one questions....

    Are you Syler?? o.o

  • can someone explain to me what to do after the scrape, i here notes but all i see is him scraping and picking once with both his index and middle fingers

  • IT DOESN'T WORK :(

Can a beginner like me do it in a little different way to make it easier to play?

  • you should try just strumming the chords in this strumming pattern: down, down, up, up, down, up.

  • Play it slow... very slow... too slow. Learn to play all the notes, strums, etc perfectly at what seems like way too slow. Once you get that down, then speed it up.

You can learn to play anything slowly then speed it up... but you can't learn to play the wrong thing at the right speed and expect to get any better.

  • lol, what are the chords?

  • @heavylucifer use fuckin ultimate-guitar and quit being lazy

  • thanks

    great voice btw

  • about the 4th video Ive watched on this and I think I finally get it, thanks. I'm off to practice, practice, practice :D

  • Great!! Thanks man!!

  • i wanted you to keep going haha. no homo

  • woah love it.. great voice..im sure u make girls melt..lol

  • awesome job! nice singing too.

  • what are the chords? thanks

  • this is a real good video. but for us beginners, its a little confusing.

  • Dude, what model is your guitar ?

  • hey what are the chords ive seen lots of videos and yours seens the most accurate i could figure it out but im kinda lazy.

  • lol, how could you be lazy to figure out?

    its not hard at all.

  • that was really good man! amazing infact!

i just cant seem to get the strumming right :/ ill keep trying thanks a lot :D

  • If someone had told me that the man in this video was Zachery Quinto, just from the voice and the chin, I would have believed it. It's uncanny.

  • That is amazing, seen alot of people try to play this... by far your the best i have seen. Thanks for the Video!

  • OMG !! thanks a lot for the advice at the beginning ! it really really helps me !!!! thanks thanks !!!!!! <3

  • Comment removed

  • OMG! you're awesome!

I wish someday I'll play like this *_*

  • marry me?

  • nice !!

  • thanks!!!

and i love your voice too haha (:

  • great job!

  • what are the chords...

  • Am C F C * Am C G G Am C E Am F Fm C C

    * (I don't know what it's called be this chord is a transition to the Aminor, it's like an A minor chord but you don't use your ring finger and you move your middle finger down a string on the same fret

Message me if you need help.

  • the transitional chord youre talking about is an E7

  • Actually no I'm not. An E7 chord is made up of EBDG#BE, while the chord i'm talking about is EBDGCE.

  • I think it's B/C

  • hey what tab are you using for this? did you get it off of ultimate guitar?

  • amazing. : )

  • uhmm nice vid but, i just learned the strum but thanks anyways ;) ^o)

  • I'm bookmarking this for when I actually learn how to play my guitar! ;) It sounds really great though, thanks!!

  • great video

  • you are lovely dude.

    thanks so much for this!

you have a really nice voice too ^^

  • wow i like this awsome playing by the way and singing =3

  • omg. this is awesome! thanks so much!

  • best lesson ive had yet.and u make it look so simple . thnks man . keep it up

  • Hullo :] well i've read through your comments and i see alot of people were wondering the same thing i was wondering. How do you pick it , like do you do them indiviually? or do you pick the bass first, then the scrape. then the middle finger then the middle string. Or do you put them ALL mixed. ?

  • nice voice

  • thank you, you give the best advice.......practice

  • Very nice tutorial!

  • Thank you so much cougarman8

  • thank you, this is actually really helpful :)

  • i dont get the scrape with the finger. can u help explain it?

  • you hold your fingers horizontally and scrape down across the strings with the sides of your fingernails to make a "snare drum" replacement

  • good voice!

  • can you make a video explaining the verse, it would help allot!!

  • you dont tell us the chords, can you tell us the chords please? Thnx

  • relative to the capo on 5: intro: am c f c b/c am c g am c e am am/g f fm c

    chorus: c am f c g x2

    verse same as intro

  • nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it really helped. been trying to learn this song for 3 days but didnt get the picking right till now. wooooooooooohooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!! thnx

  • the way you described the picking patterns helped soo muchh. thank you for that lol

  • thanks! you rock. awesome voice too :) how long've you been playing???

  • thank you man, excellent video

  • i keep freaken knocking the wrong cords when i'm picking, man why do they have to be so close together :P nice tutorial, i liked it, most dont talk about the finger picking that much, which is what i needed, and i noticed everybody plays it slightly different to the real song, this is better :)

  • ohh shittttt..

    that's awesomee!!

    :D

    your voice is lovely.

    hahaha

  • chords, por favor?

  • Comment removed

  • that's fucking sick dude i give you props

  • Man. I don't think i'll ever be good enough at guitar to do that picking thing. At least i can still enjoy listening to others play it. Great song.

  • i cant do finger picking to save my life :(

good job, amazin guitar skills :)

  • thnx for the help..oh btw wonderful voice. ^^

  • i fail at the scratching thing ]:

  • Think of it like the flamenco style of strumming, like when one plays "John the Fisherman" on bass. It helped me anyway. Best of luck.

  • wow thank you so much! i absolutely love this song! probably one of my favorite ben gibbard songs of all time :) love your voice too

  • i see you dont use an f. i cant do an f that well because it sounds mute so what chord are you playing instead of the f?

  • He's playing an F, just a different way of doing the F chord

  • great voice, ok video it came pretty easy to me. it gave the basic idea but not enough for an average player to get it easily.

  • american idol all the way man

  • i love your guitar, what kind is it?

  • rad voice. =] this song is hard, im tryign though

  • that helped me a lot. thnx

  • could you do a vid where you explain the notes

  • u play well

but this doesnt teach how to play this song

  • much appreciated man! uber helpfulness! :}

  • awesome video man, I appriciate it, but do you think you could do the song again with the picking in a slower motion...so I can see how the notes match up?

  • dude you sound like stephen lynch when you sing.

    pretty cool.

  • Good lesson. Wish you would have spent more time talking about how the base notes match up with the chords. They seem to alternate at times but it's hard to pick it up on the video.

  • Great tutorial! Quite hard to do, but, practise, practise, practise!

  • mgiht wanna practise your spelling

  • might want to practice yours too =p

  • fail. hehe.

Also you have a very nice voice cougarman.

  • Oh awesome! The chords I was told sound terrible. Thanks, helped me too :)

  • thanks...this helped alot...u've got a really good voice too

  • nice tutorial and your version is spot on. Last sentence is the most important though,Practice,Practice,Practice. I got this stickhandling video for hockey and the dude said you gotta do something 1000 times to "write a motor program" in your brain. I figured, hey in two years I'll be two years older anyway.

  • how do you play it with out the capo?

  • what are the chord prgressions??!?!

  • ur voice sounds like the recording.

    this really help.

me and my band are going to be doing this song so thanks. =)

  • this actually helped a lot

i learned it some weird chords, instead of Am C F C Em, if that IS what you play, its just what it looked like, i learned it Dm F B F C, which was a lot harder

so im hoping the easier chords will help with how hard the strumming will be :)

    haha thanks

  • not that it REALLY matters, but i realized that i posted that under my friend's username. i felt stupid and couldn't delete it, so...

never mind, thanks for helping haha

  • Can you re-post your video of "First Day of My Life"? That was such a good video.

  • u are a great player and have a good voice thank u 4 this

  • really good! thanks! that is really the help the i need.....
