  • This is fucking awful. Listen to the Tom Waits version.

  • Mugs this guy along with Sir tom are class words melt wen they sing.... Nadolig LLawen thats merry xmas in Welsh....... get in there Rod u belter

  • Nett gemeint, aber Welten hinter dem Original.

  • rod was good once....check out the faces....now he's just an old man living on past glories....tom is THE man

  • Well sung!

  • Tom Waits also wrote Downtown Train. I prefer Rod's covers of both songs.

  • @LocustIvy Well, then. I think I'd have my ears tested. I'm with @StrawberryJungle.

  • @enlightenedhillbilly Aren't you glad we aren't all required to like the same thing.

  • no thanks

  • I love this verson! Tom Waits is one of the greatest song writer, Rod Stewart is a good singer, Tom Waits definitely is not a great singer make piece with that

  • @bobsixtynine Make peace with that?! I refuse to. Tom Waits is one of the most wonderful singers in the world. Okay, he hasn't got a conventional voice, which unfortunately to some people means that he isn't any good. But this is Tom's song and he sings it so perfectly it makes me want to cry. He's wonderful.

  • cum gargling song theif.... get fucked you fucking piss weak amateur

  • I love Rod's and Tom's version.....

  • Tom waits wrote a great song here - and no-one sings it like Tom, but Rod does a good job and made Tom a good bit of money.

  • This is an abortion. Rod Stewart shouldn't be allowed within a mile of any Tom Waits song, or any song for that matter.

  • If you like Waits' version, go listen to his. If you prefer Stewart's, enjoy. (: And I shall very well enjoy this beautiful song and his beautiful voice.

  • I love Rod's version of this.

  • Reading the comments I wonder:

WHAT exactly is Tom Waits share in this song:

    - did he write the text ?

    - did he compose the melody ?

    - was he the first one to perform ?

I merely enjoy the modest way of Stewart's performing...

  • anyone who actually listens to this from start to finish must listen to the tom waits version 417 times for penance.

  • Can anyone post "Sonny" also by Rod?

  • The best Waltzing-Song I've ever heard.

  • I've listened to this one and the original, and I prefer Stewart's version.

  • @yobynop Me too!

  • Rod you are a gift of life with your wonderful talent.... thank you ...

  • the voice of waits is srsly better for this song.. aber a rly nice cover :))

  • Comment removed

  • It´s Definitely the best Version of this great Song

    It´s Amazing.

  • Hell no..no beiber feaver here...too old for that dung... just didnt like the song..usualy he is good, but this one struck me funny

  • @fordamain you the dumbass... the song TomWaits wrote in juxtaposition to "Waltzing Matilda" folk song chorus. This is not "Waltzing Matilda", clearly, but then you would have known this if you had either known anything about Tom Waits or had bothered to listen to the song.

  • Stewart's version sounds like musak being tortured. Waits injects genuine pathos into the song. When Waits sings it, you believe it.

  • Brilliant...watt's version is crap..bloke can't sing to save his life..people who say they like him must be tone deaf

  • Not the original? Not the best version? Who cares. It's wonderful .. and it establishes the original!

  • Rod has usually had great taste in selecting songs to cover, Dylan, Ewan MacColl, Tom Waits amongst others...this is a pretty good one

  • I must say: This Version is much, much, much better than the Original from Tom Waits! It let the Feelings comme up in me! Like sailing at nice Springday on a Lake! The Voies from Tom Waits schok me always again and again!

  • I just can say: The Cover is mutch, much, much better than the Original fromTom Waits! This Version takes a lot of Warm Feeling over to the Peoples!!! Compares to this from T. Waits, wich shoket me always again!

  • This song sucks especially when the dog from the Muppets is singing it (AKA Tom Waits)

  • @christinamcarthur another young mind struck by bieber fever....

  • I just hope Rod Stewart fans know it is a Tom Waits song. I prefer Waits' version

  • @dinkibass it's not tom wait's

    it's australian.

  • @ishadosi Actually only the 'Waltzing Matilda' section is Australian. 'Waltzing Matilda' is a term relating to soldiers dancing with Brooms because there were no women to dance with. The line is used in Traubert's blues to emphasise loneliness much like it is used in 'waltzing Matilda'. The poem/Song 'Waltzing Matilda' is about a Swagman who steals a Sheep and then jumps into a Billabong in order to escape arrest.

  • Gänsehaut!! Immer wieder!

  • fuck dude. this song almost made me cry. my dad used to carry me around the living room whilst this song was playing. i was like 3. the memories...

  • wtf is up with you people?! Rod is amazing, if your ears are clogged then don't come around here spamming. I looked up the original by Waits ages ago to see how much better it was and... it wasn't! As soon as Rod sings something, it becomes his. Yet I didn't go around posting negative comments on Waits vids just because I don't like his singing and think he looks mentally challenged. Please get over yourselves and respect the fact that Rod is too good for you inferior little minds to comprehend.

  • The right song when you are far away from home and alone … and after the third glas of “water“.(-;

  • Rod is Rod. He does it perfectly!

    This one is unique!

    Like " I am Sailing"

  • @vespaklaus1 i had to look up this holderbusch clown to be able to respond to your comment. cause, ya know, who the hell is he? but now that i've seen it. come on man, come on. honestly? he sings it better than Tom Wait's original?!? how. please. please tell me how he sings it better. tell me how he attempted to sing it any different that it's original recording?

  • you guys are fucking high if you think this or any other version than Tom Waits' original is superior.

  • Beautifully made. No better ever.

    Jorgen Borgholt.

  • @vespaklaus1 sure?

  • This version is 100 times better than the original

  • its contempoarry.. gives others the choice we had..?? Origin is unique but this is really good.

  • its contempoarry.. gives others the choice we had..?? Origin is unique but this is really good.

  • @kingeri18 the verses are by Tom Waits, and the chorus is waltzing matilda, which is an australian song predating WWI about an itinerant worker stealing a sheep and drowning himself in a billabong when he's caught. The song "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" refers to it and is about australian troops in WWI

  • what... The man is an absolute legend... And how many albums have you got of Tom waites

  • Goodnight to the street sweepers love this version i used to be a street sweeper but just love all the lyrics of this song Rod has unique voice and I just love his music.

  • One song= Two Genuises

  • an old shirt soaked in blood and whisky...says it all

  • I was quite prepared to kinda like a version other than Waits', but when you mess with lyrics I just don't get it. How can you change "and my Stacy's are soaking wet" to 'my strength is soaking away'? Wtf?

  • I choose for the raw voice of Tom Waits much better

  • I just love this song the lyrics are full of meaning for all Australians

  • Talk about goddamn nostalgia. I miss this song so much. My father would play his songs during roadtrips when I was just a wee kid.

  • thanks a lot for posting this song along w/ the lyric.

the song is really quite something.

    I miss you

  • Don't think he claimed to write the lyrics but he definitely wasn't putting on a strange sounding voice while he sang it I think Tom missed his chance of a classic because of the voice version of this.

  • It's just personal taste.

I prefer Rod's version but Tom Waits is certainly distinctive and original.

And what a song he wrote !!

To me it's like the difference between Peggy Seeger's original version of Ewan McColl's 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' and Roberta Flack's version.

  • P.S. If you know ANYTHING about Tom Waits, you would know that he also has a very soft side to his voice. Another great talent most could not compare to.

  • Tom Waits wrote and sang Waltzing Matilda from his guts. Rod Stewart has nothing on Tom Waits. My daughter is named after this song because of how beautifully it was done by Tom Waits. This just makes me sad.

  • It hurts me to see people saying this is better than the original.

  • so much better than Tom Waits!how many cigarettes did he smoke to get a horrible voice like that!!gowan rod!

  • cant believe i found this song

  • wasted and wounded...immer wieder passend!!!

  • Tom Waits is boring.

  • rod is the man for this song

  • i can't believe i found this song!! ..wow the last time i heard this song was more than 12 years and still the rhythm stuck in my head .. i was looking for this song everywhere for a long time .. and finally found it .. .. big thanks for uploading and posting the lyrics .. it's a special song to me and brings a lots of memories :)

  • I like this cover

  • @fordamain

Tom Waits did write this, the only part of this song that is from the aussie folk number is half of the chorus.

So don't go slating other people's research and try doing some of your own..

    You dumbass.

  • einfach super

  • Rod Stewart should be whipped for doing this.

  • Comment removed

  • i love this

    ***

  • He did good with it but im sorry I like Toms version better. He jsut seems to put more soul in it.

  • The Greatest EVER. Thanks Rod...

  • You can't hate Rod Stewart. I would rather hear him cover this piece of gold than anyone else. You can't just cover Tom Waits and not do this good of a job on it. Such would be a crime.

Ich liebe ihn für seine Musik and he is a verry good Football player

  • forever i love him.

  • I prefer Rod's version. Beautiful song...

  • rod does the second best version but cant compare to

the love and pain of tom waits

  • Thankfully it's not a competition. And if, at least in part, a vocal rendition of any song is about conveying emotion then Rod Stewart has done this fine composition proud.

His voice is almost perfect for this.

  • waltzing matilda .....waltzing matilda....what a beautiful songggg

  • Good Shit.

  • I think Rod's clothes are just fine, very mod. And for his version of Tom's song it is great. As for the models he has dated ,he has married everyone of them except for one. A wonderful dad to his kids. Some people are just so jealous. I've been to all of his Australian concerts , he just gets better with age.

  • this is so beautiful

  • God bless Australia

  • This is nothing on the original; but it's still a damn good cover.

  • awesome

  • just listened to the waits version ,

i thought it was a joke at first so i listened to another song of his ,which was equally awful

  • How is it possible to make crab out of such a good song?!! Tom Waits forever;-)!!!!

  • wow. respect.

  • this is one of my favorite songs (by Waits), I've never heard this version before, and I can't seem to watch it without laughing

  • goodnight Rod

  • Rod does this song beautifully he can come a waltzing matilda with me any day. I think he is the best

  • This has nothing on the original, but its ok =D

  • The best version

  • Tom Waits! I think his version is better. But this one is also nice

  • Thank you. I will play this on Rememberance Sunday and ANZAC Day when we toast the heroes.

Rod sings it straight from the heart.

  • NOT better than the original. but it's interesting to hear it through a different voice. One of the best songs ever written, for sure!

  • ein echt schöner song!!!!!! ich liebe ihn!

  • nice song :D

  • Dieser Song geht unter die Haut!!!

  • Leave it to Rod Stewart to ruin a perfect song.

  • @Illustratology Leave it to your mom to ruin your FACE sucka!

  • hang on mate, this is only rods version, not that he done a bad job its still a good song to sing flopped on your pals shoulder after a night down the pub, oh great days

  • @kevinm1999 - Are we related lol ?

  • puts original 2 shame really guy is amazing!

  • These Lyrics Is written To the Danish Singer Mathilde, from Lasse And Mathilde(danish Ppl know who)

He wrote cause he doing a visit in Denmark had a fling with her.

  • actually Tom Waits wrote lyrics around the poem Waltzing Matilda - by Andrew Barton Paterson and the poem put to music is Australia's unofficial anthem

  • I like Rod Stewart's version but it's a great song anyway.

Different people like different voices, songs, sports, holidays, looks, styles.

It's just personal preference. Personal taste. It doesn't make you a "sick sweet knock off drained of soul"

  • Unique.

  • Was für eine wunderschöne Ballade.

  • this is what I'm going to dance to at my wedding. With my dad. It's our song <3

  • What the hell. he's changing the lyrics here.

Its supposed to be: "My Stacy's are soaking wet." as in his Stacy Adams shoes. Not "my strength is soaking away."

Waits' version is much more truthful. He is the author, after all.

  • very very good song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • tom waits' version is better. its just so much more stripped down and u can feel his sadness

  • Sorry dude, I honestly think Rod Stewart does this far better than Tom Waits, even if the lyrics were his originally Tom's. I sing myself, and can do Bryan Adams & Jo Cocker-esque stuff. Somebody once recommended I do the Tom Waits version. However, when I heard it... Jesus Christ, what was the guy thinking? Rod Stewart all the way I'm afraid, matey.

  • I'm sorry, but Rod Stewart butchered this song. Listen to Tom Waits' version--he's the guy who wrote it.

  • geil geil geil

  • fuck you rod u look like a foot

  • @classicsacunt ur mum fucked him in a toilet bahahahah slag!!!

  • yyyy\

    \

  • the best song ever but i m the only one that thinks that way

  • tom waits wrote this song, he only used waltzing matilda in the refrain

  • RODDDDY BHOY MON THE HOOOPS

  • Wasted and wounded, and it ain`t what the moon did, I`ve got what I paid for now.

See you tomorrow, hey Frank, can I borrow a couple of bucks from you

to go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda, you`ll go

    waltzing Mathilda with me

I`m an innocent victim of a blinded alley

And I´m tired of all these soldiers here.

No one speaks English, and everything`s broken, and my

    strengh is soaking away

to go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,

you`ll go waltzing Mathilda with me

  • Best version of this song ever!

  • @Beenanddoneit the original is the best.... Tom Waits! Rod is a sweet sick knock off drained of soul..... Tom wrote it, and knows how to sing it....

  • THIS was the version I was looking for. (y)

  • Well I guess, compared to Tom Waits' version of this song, I gotta say, I do like Rod Stewart's version a little better :)

I never knew this song was originally written in memory of 50,000 Australians who died in the Battle of Gallipoli, against the Turks in WW I.

    Interesting.

  • @Pavletic111 Was that this song? Or are you thinking of "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda"?

  • @Pavletic111 I thought it was for Australian soldiers in Vietnam.

  • OOPS,SORRY ABOUT THAT,MY MISTAKE!!! iI meant Rod Stewart,lol!

  • @BatsyBeve lololol it's ok i was kidding

  • Not bad,Ron! I think his career has been great, but now he seems too tame,in fact he is now boring ,at least to me. I really like Tom Waits rendition of this song better!

  • @BatsyBeve His career has been so great you can't remember his name.

  • @LandoftheShanks Ok,were are the Rod lickin' arse-wipes who are talking smack about our Tom?!

  • @SgtBastard101 all over -____-

  • @LandoftheShanks Crap! I luv talkin' smack about run down pop stars! hahaHA!

  • @SgtBastard101 LOL! No, I mean the haters are all over ha ha. Not the battle. It's onnnn!

  • @LandoftheShanks When the next one happens, let me know. I got mein Panzer a new Bobble head! hahaHA!

  • oh and people bitch about tom waits' voice being too raspy etc. well rod stewart sings out of his nose and hisses when he sings. sounds terrible. least tom can sing from the soul instead of his ass whistling. oh yeah i said it.

  • goodnight JohnBoy, goodnight MaryEllen, goodnight JimBob.. goodnight Matilda, too..

  • Just great!!! Thank you Rod!!!

  • This song is best done by Waits. This version lacks the heart and soul it deserves. It just sounds empty without the right voice behind it. Like drunken karaoke.

  • @wehuntzb You hit it spot on. Not to mention Rod Stewart said some rude shit about Tom Waits and look where he is at now. While he's in Las Vegas stuck in lounges, Tom is touring around the globe at age 60 and people are still demanding him in every country. Curse of being an asshole eh Rod?!

  • @LandoftheShanks ROD HAS THE RIGHT TO SAY WHATEVER HE WANTS BECAUSE HE IS AN AUTHORITY IN MUSIC RIGHT?????????????????? ROD IS ROD AND THE UNKNONM YOU MENTION ONLY YOU KNOW HIM (IT)

  • @aguacan Spoken like a true idiot. He's an authority in music? That's why he rips off Tom Waits' songs? Because he is an authority?! He has no real talent and is stuck in Vegas while all the other "known" artists are collaborating with Tom Waits and he still gets a lot of work and fans still demand him across the globe. He is touring in Ireland right now and as for him being UNKNOWN - only to you & other mainstream junkys.

  • @aguacan And the great thing about Tom Waits is he doesn't work for the public like a slave. That is why he is quote "UNKNOWN" as you say. Because he doesn't jerk off the media like Rod Stewart does & doesn't care what anyone thinks and do some research before shooting off your mouth because Tom Waits is known by masses and respected.

  • @aguacan could you be more stupid... there are commercial hags (like Rod) and there are true artists (ahhhh, wait.... Tom Waits). Tom doesn't have to sing other people's music.... errrr... excuse me, hack up other people's music...

When you get a little maturity, come back and let's discussed what makes a great musician... (hint: It isn't top 40 placements made by ad agency tricks and payola)

  • @WichitaSam and you??? who stung you your nasty dirty and sissy ass to be claiming?? what the hell are you barking about fucking bitch. go fuck your gay you mother fucker nigger, no matter what you bark keep your comments for yourself fucking trash.
