I hate Stephen Harper but one thing I agree with him on is increasing military presence in the Arctic, the 8 new ice breaking armed ships with heli pads, and a deep sea port being built is a great idea and it will allow control of who enters the passage. Canada is fine with ships passing through only if they ask permission to enter first, this is internal waters within our borders. Like Harper said use it or lose it.
The US ambassador is a moron. Why is there even a dispute? The north-west passage goes straight through Canada! Well if Canada does guard that strait with military defences the Americans, even with their overwhelming armed forces, would have an extremely hard time politically going about it. Being part of the commonwealth means that an old lady with a funny hat sometimes visits, but it also means that the british army would have to take canada's side in any such conflict. j'habite dans le nord quebecois, et je suis très deçu de voir que les pays comme les états-unis et la russie convoite le territoire canadien. Il y a quelques années personne ne voulait du nord-canadien et depuis le rechauffement climatique ils viennent revendiquer un bout de notre terre, je trouve ça totalement hypocrite. Very simple solution to The Northern Passage Dispute! In the interests of National Defence, Canadian Armed Forces load the passage with remotely armed mines! Those who contact and are granted permission for passage will be sent the GPS co-ordinates for a constantly evolving safe route! Those who dont request permission may traverse at their own risk!
